W Hotels has opened its new flagship property in Shanghai, kicking off a major expansion of its portfolio in China.
The new W Shanghai The Bund, which is located on the North Bund between the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek, marks the debut of Marriott’s contemporary luxury brand in the city.
It becomes only the third W Hotel in mainland China, following existing properties in Beijing and Guangzhou. But the brand is set for significant expansion in the country over the coming years, starting in August 2017 with the scheduled opening of the W Suzhou. Then over the subsequent two years, a further six new W Hotels are expected to open their doors in Changsha, Xiamen, Shenyang, Sanya, Xi’an and Chengdu.
Marriott also currently operates W Hotels in Hong Kong and Taipei.
“Over the past few years we have seen incredible growth worldwide across our brands, with the China market becoming increasingly important for Marriott International,” said Stephen Ho, Marriott’s CEO for Greater China. “The opening of the W Shanghai The Bund underscores the ambitious expansion of Marriott International’s luxury brands in Greater China.”
Billed as the brand’s “global flagship” property, W Shanghai The Bund features 374 rooms and suites, almost all of which have views of the Huangpu River. These include a series of suites with LED walls and beds suspended from the ceiling, and the duplex “Extreme WOW Suite” which contains a hanging neon installation. Other neon light installations are also on display in the hotel’s lobby area.
Facilities at W Shanghai include international and Cantonese restaurants, three bars, a spa, 24-hour fitness centre, a swimming pool that overlooks the Shanghai skyline, and nearly 6,000m² of events space.
“Our hotels across the world are incredibly unique – each reinterpreting its destination through design,” said Anthony Ingham, global brand leader for W Hotels. “The electrifying design of W Shanghai The Bund is no exception, solidifying its position as a global flagship for W.”
