Urbanpod, India’s first capsule hotel, has announced its plans to expand with about 800 pods at 6-7 locations in the next two years.
The original ‘smart pods’ are located near the Domestic and International Mumbai Airports, and the Chakala Metro Station. Though its concept is not a first, the minimalist hotel is adding a twist to the Indian market, providing travellers with a different kind of experience.
The ‘smart pods’ were designed by Singapore-based architecture firm, Formwerkz, and offers budget accommodation that comes with a personal TV, complimentary Wi-Fi, power sockets, USB ports, mood lighting and a personal safe.
“We are getting a lot of enquiries”
In a media report, Urbanpod’s co-founder and director, Hiren Gandhi, said: “Currently, we are operational in one location that is Mumbai, which has 140 pods. We are getting a lot of enquiries and are exploring strategic partnerships with property owners who can take up the franchise.”
Mumbai’s Urbanpod was also recently featured among the ‘World’s Coolest Capsule Hotels’. These included 17 of the world’s best capsule and pod hotels from different cities like Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, Amsterdam, Tokyo and London.
“We are on the right course in our mission”
Gandhi, commented: “It is a validation that we are on the right course in our mission of providing beautifully designed, comfortable, clean and safe accommodation with high service standards and affordable pricing.”
