The Upper Mustang Trek in Nepal is the most unique and beautiful trail in Nepal. Trekking in the Upper Mustang area is a venture of a lifetime. The furtive land together to the Tibetan border is on the other side of the Himalaya, associated to the Tibetan Plateau.
After some days of hiking up the Kali Gandaki River the zenith moment of the trek is reaching Lo Manthang – the former capital of the Lo kingdom. Trekking in the Upper Mustang feels like you are entering a hidden area. This area remained separate from Nepal as its own kingdom – the Lo Manthang kingdom. Till 1950, the kingdom was separate and independent from other country, ruled by its own king. Today, Upper Mustang is known for trekking and adventure.
The trek starts from Jomsom and then, climb up the Kali Gandaki river valley. Then we ascend, further into the parched, unfertile landscape where you won’t be able to see any green vegetations. Everywhere you will see shadow caves dug high up into precipice walls. Lo Manthang is merged by a long stone wall. Behind the walls there is wonderful abbeys and colorful palaces. Most of the people here are culturally Tibetan and practice Tibetan Buddhism. They are kind , show great friendliness and hospitality to visitors.
After an outstanding and unforgettable trip to Lo Manthang, we descent to Muktinath, which is a famous Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage destination. Take a ceremonial bath in the sacred waters at Muktinath and enjoy the mountain views. Then, you will head back to Pokhara. The landscapes in Upper Mustang are unreal. From snow-white peaks to sterile cliffs and hills to parcels of green, lush land the trial is full of adventure.
The people of upper mustang celebrates Tiji Festival! The three-day long Festive in Lo-Manthang takes place to pray for peace to conquer evil. While Buddhist monks play music and make cultural dances. The merriments honor Buddha’s embodiment’s victory over the demon that caused a riot in the area many years ago. In 2019, the festival falls sometime during mid-May.
You will feel as if you are travelling back in time to an ancient territory. The landscapes as well as the culture is remarkably well-preserved and well-protected and valued the most. Both the cultural captivations as well as the unique landscapes can be found nowhere else in Nepal – the Upper Mustang is one-of-a-kind.
The trail is not that difficult as you will not be ascending that much of high altitude. The highest altitude reached is about 3,800 meters. The Upper Mustang welcomes all the trekkers from all around the world.
