The life insurance team at Comparethemarket has analysed the volume of Instagram hashtags and Google searches for over 70 of the world’s most famous landmarks, revealing the sights people are dreaming of visiting. Take a look at the top three below.
The Burj Khalifa is the most popular bucket list landmark in the world. The Burj Khalifa, located in Dubai, is the world’s tallest building and also ranks as the most popular global landmark. The skyscraper has an average global search volume of 2,240,000 per month, the highest in the study. There are over six million images under the hashtag #burjkhalifa on the platform as travellers share their favourite snaps of the grand landmark.
The Eiffel Tower is the second most popular landmark on travellers’ bucket lists and the most Instagrammed landmark in the world. Paris is notorious for being the city of love, so there is no wonder that the Eiffel Tower ranks as the second most popular landmark on people’s bucket lists. Every evening from dusk till 11:45 pm, the tower lights up in a golden display of twinkling lights. Therefore, it is no surprise that the Eiffel Tower is the most Instagrammed landmark in the world, with over 7.2 million images using the hashtag #eiffeltower.
Ranking in third place is Times Square with over 1.5 million Google searches per month. Times Square, the major hub of the world’s entertainment industry, ranks as the third most bucket-listed landmark in the world. The iconic New York City landmark has almost five million Instagram posts under the hashtag #timessquare, as well as 1.5 million Google search queries each month.

Four US landmarks feature among the top 10 most popular in the world. Times Square, Niagara Falls, Grand Canyon and the White House all rank among the top 10 most popular bucket list landmarks in the world.
Niagara Falls sees a global monthly search volume of 1.8 million on average, as well as 3.6 million Instagram posts. Meanwhile, around 1.2 million people per month are searching for the Grand Canyon, and 1.5 million are looking up the White House.
