Copenhagen and Paris are the best European cities for budget-friendly MICHELIN dining in Europe, according to new research released by travel money provider, John Lewis Finance.
The capital cities are each home to 14 budget-friendly restaurants listed in the Guide, making them the joint top European destinations for affordable MICHELIN dining. Prague follows in third spot with 13 restaurants within this more affordable category (less than less than £25 or €35 on average for a meal).
As a travel money provider, John Lewis Finance analysed 16,000 restaurants listed within the MICHELIN Guide to help holiday budgets go further. Using MICHELIN’s own pricing criteria – only restaurants where diners can get a full meal for less than £25 or €35 on average, are included in the list.
Known for its innovative and quirky food scene, Copenhagen is home to a diverse range of quality restaurants that suit any budget, from traditional Scandinavian cooking specialists such as Restaurant Carl Nielsen, to restaurants serving modern and highly experimental dishes not found anywhere else.
Sharing the top spot and famed for its Nouvelle Cuisine, traditional cooking, and being the training ground of some of the world’s most revered chefs, Paris has a reputation as the epicentre of gastronomy. However, with many restaurants featuring within the research, the findings show that fine dining doesn’t have to cost the earth. For affordable, classic French dining, look no further than À la Biche au Bois on avenue Ledru-Rollin.

The top countries for MICHELIN dining on a budget
When it comes to the top countries in Europe for affordable MICHELIN dining, the research found that Italy takes the top spot, with 230 budget-friendly restaurants listed within the MICHELIN guide.
Known for its fresh, high-quality ingredients prepared with passion and simplicity, Italy is one of the most well-loved food capitals globally, with the most popular of restaurants in the guide leaning on classic Italian cooking and celebrating the very best of the regions’ ingredients.
France is the second-best country for affordable MICHELIN dining, with 140 restaurants featured within the guide. Spain followed in third place with 118 restaurants. Germany came in 4th place with 68 restaurants, some of which, including Zur Linde in Oberboihingen and Gocklwirt in Stephanskirchen being cash only.
