The starting fare for taxis in Tokyo has been significantly reduced.
Previously, passengers were charged JPY730 (approx. US$6.40) for the first kilometre – well above the international average. But this has now been slashed by more than 40% to JPY410 (approx. US$3.60), effective immediately. The new fare applies to all 23 of Tokyo’s wards.
The move is expected to be especially beneficial to tourists who use taxis for shorter trips around Tokyo.
With the launch of the new service, the Tokyo Hire-Taxi Association (THTA) has released a publicity video aimed at promoting the JPY410 “choinori” rides among inbound tourists.
