Japan’s busiest airport, Tokyo Haneda, will continue to expand its international operations in the coming years, with the opening of Terminal 2 to overseas flights.
At present, Haneda’s T2 is exclusively used for domestic flights. But according to Jiji News, the terminal will start welcoming international flights from March 2020, a few months ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.
The report cited unnamed sources as saying that Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport & Tourism will allow ANA to operate the international flights. New immigration and customs facilities will need to be developed to facilitate the change.
Haneda’s dedicated international terminal opened in 2010, in addition to its two domestic terminals. But a sharp rise in demand for international travel to Japan is driving the need to expand the airport, which is already the second busiest in Asia.
