Hotel Terrestre by Grupo Habita is a collection of seven spectacular Brutalist buildings strategically placed to take full use of views of the Oaxacan coast.
This new eco-chic hideaway in southern Mexico certainly checks all the eco-chic boxes. Even though it only opened in February, it was already named Wallpaper’s Best Hotel for 2022.
Grupo Habita’s Hotel Terrestre is a complex of seven spectacular Brutalist structures positioned to take full use of views of the Oaxacan coast to the front and mountains to the rear, with experiential features centred on healing, detoxification, and unwinding.
To reduce the need for air conditioning, architect Alberto Kalach of Taller de Arquitectura X and interior design company RB + K used locally sourced materials and built-in natural cooling systems. Fourteen interconnecting multi-story villas with outdoor showers and private terraces with pools facing the ocean are available on the mid-level, earthy, unpainted interiors of mud and clay contrast with handcrafted furniture by Oscar Hagerman, a renowned Mexican designer.
Gardens surround a wellness area with a communal pool and swimming lane, as well as a spa. Guests can dine in a separate open-air restaurant, where Mexican history and local products are incorporated into an excellent detox menu.
However, in adjacent Puerto Escondido, there are plenty of family-run restaurants to sneak away to for a taco and a margarita, as well as destination eateries like Kakurega Omakase and Cobarde a small-batch mezcaleria.
