These eight green initiatives make Switzerland among the most responsible destinations in the world
Ever wondered why Switzerland captivates the hearts of travellers from across the world, year after year? The answer is that this stunning country has been consciously looking out for planet Earth long before sustainability became a norm!
Having introduced its unique Swisstainable strategy back in 2021 to ensure that its natural resources and treasures are preserved for generations to come, Switzerland has its eyes on a long-term goal. These eight green initiatives set the bar high globally as well:
Public Transport
Switzerland has one of the world’s most extensive railway networks with over 11,000 trains running every day on the SBB network. Covering 3,000 kilometres, this extensive network that carries 1.1 million passengers daily has trains powered by renewable energy that considerably minimise the carbon footprint.
Nature Conservation
Since 1876, the Forest Act has been protecting and preserving Swiss forests ensuring that the forest cover does not decrease. Today, 31% of Switzerland is forested and continues to expand. The country also protects one-seventh of its land within 20 national parks, preserving diverse ecosystems and natural beauty.
Air
Ever since the health-promoting benefits of Davos’ Mountain air was discovered in 1853, Switzerland has been attracting tourists from across the world drawn to its air, climate and several health resorts known for their therapeutic effects.
In fact, Switzerland is one of the countries in Europe that have the lowest levels of pollutants.
Water
Regarded as the water castle of Europe, Switzerland holds about 6% of the continent’s freshwater reserves with large rivers like Rhone, Rhine, Ticino and Inn having their source here. So clean is its water that it can be drunk from the taps as well as the many fountains across the country.
Organic Consumption
Swiss retailers are very environmentally aware, leading the international sustainability ranking. The country boasts the highest consumption of organic products per capita among its global counterparts, putting its retailers at the forefront of the initiative.
Food
Nearly 200 restaurants here are committed to becoming more sustainable every day in Switzerland. The eateries are dedicated to daily sustainability efforts, employing diverse methods like energy-efficient cooking, local ingredient sourcing, and innovative food waste reduction while offering a unique gastronomic experience.
Recycling
Switzerland has achieved an impressive recycling rate of nearly 85% for PET (plastic) bottles alone and putting them to New Use. Its dedication to responsible waste disposal minimizes environmental impact and allows the country to have a minimal footprint, setting a global example.
Tourist Accommodations
More and more tourist accommodations in Switzerland are joining the path of sustainability by embracing eco-friendly practices. These hotels and resorts prioritize energy efficiency, utilise renewable resources, and offer organic food options. Swiss hospitality is not just luxurious but also prioritizes the environment, allowing guests to relax and connect with nature without compromise.
