The Debut of Phyllida Barlow’s “untitled: folly; baubles” in Asia at K11 MUSEA in Hong Kong
K11 Group and K11 Art Foundation have brought the first in Asia debut of Phyllida Barlow’s “untitled: folly; baubles” to K11 MUSEA. The larger-than-life masterpiece, which was originally commissioned by the British Council and represented the United Kingdom at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017, is set to enthral visitors with its unique blend of whimsy and grandeur.
Running from now until 28 March, Barlow’s around 30 brightly coloured giant baubles will be a sight for visitors to behold at the K11 MUSEA Atrium. About ten of the art pieces will be exhibited at the K11 MUSEA promenade from 24 February to the end of November, offering an eye-catching spectacle for locals and tourists alike. The masterpiece will then continue its journey and make its debut in mainland China at K11 Group’s first flagship project in the Chinese mainland, K11 ECOAST, in 2024. By creating these artistic spaces across borders, K11 Group strives to promote a greater appreciation of art and culture throughout Greater China.
Regarded as one of the most prominent artists in the United Kingdom, Barlow’s unique approach to art earned her a damehood from Queen Elizabeth II in 2021. With each installation, Barlow pushes the boundaries of sculpture as she draws inspiration from her surroundings to create artworks that are simultaneously imposing and playful. Her signature piece, “untitled: folly; baubles”, has enjoyed tremendous success and toured the world since it rose to fame. After making a lasting impression in the West, it will be making its Asia debut in Hong Kong and is certain to delight art lovers and the public.
While ordinary materials such as cardboard, fabric, plywood, and cement may not be impressive on their own, when they are transformed to create “untitled: folly; baubles”, they exude a boundless energy that draws audiences in and encourages them to explore their own understanding of sculpture. Through her work, Barlow draws attention to the obstacles and challenges that shape our daily lives and invites viewers to engage with them in new and exciting ways.
To accompany the exhibition, K11 Art Foundation will present docent-led tours which invite our audience to take a deep dive into the masterpiece. Please stay tuned for registration details. K11 Group will continue to deliver world-class cultural experiences to audiences which echo our vision of bringing forward “a journey of imagination” to the public.
