Thai tourism authorities are hard at work in developing measures for vaccinated travellers to further revive tourism curbed by the COVID pandemic.
According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Yuthasak Supasorn, new measures may include shortened or waived mandatory quarantine.
“We have to be fast because we want to start welcoming tourists in the third quarter,” he told Reuters.
With high hopes to reopen in the third quarter, TAT plans to begin selling tour packages after April. As vaccination is currently underway in most countries, Thailand thinks that travellers will start going on trips by Q3.
TAT also announced that tourism workers will be among those who will receive the first batch of vaccines. The tourism ministry has requested 100,000 doses of COVID-19 from the national government vaccine for tourism workers in five tourism-centric provinces — Chon Buri, Krabi, Phang Nga, Chiang Mai and Phuket.
Thailand is hoping that the new measures for inoculated tourists will help turn around the gloomy tourism industry. In 2019, Thailand received about 40 million foreign tourists earning a total revenue of 1.91 trillion baht (USD63 billion). In 2020, only 6.7 million visitors visited Thailand who spent 332 billion baht (USD 11 billion).
