teamLab Planets Tokyo expansion to open in January
The new area features four spaces dedicated to digital art
teamLab Planets Tokyo announced that its expansion which offers new immersive experiences will officially open on 22nd January 2025.
The expanded area essentially increases the exhibition space by 1.5 times, and features four new spaces for digital art, including an Athletics Forest that serves as a creative sports space.
According to teamLab founder Toshiyuki Inoko: “We started Athletics Forest with the hope of enhancing three-dimensional and higher-dimensional thinking.”
He described the new area as a three-dimensional space that excessively demands the physical body, as well as a space where people can perceive art with their physical bodies.
What else is in store for visitors?
The new Catching and Collecting Forest is a space where visitors can use their smartphones to capture and study extinct creatures.
Inoko described moving through the space as physically exploring with others, discovering and catching something, then taking the chance to broaden interests based on what was caught.
He said: “This is what we have been doing naturally over the long course of human history. For humanity, the acts of catching and gathering are fun, educational, and part of life.”
Another new area is Future Park, an amusement zone where guests can co-create an endlessly evolving artwork.
Ten new immersive pieces will be displayed throughout the new zones, and the creative collective will also be launching the Sketch Factory, a retail space where guests can take home products featuring their own creations.
