The Federal Statistical Office of Switzerland has revealed that the Swiss museums welcomed more than 10 million visitors in 2021, registering a significant increase compared to 2020. According to the data provided by the Federal Statistical Office, the number of museum events in Switzerland increased by 77 per cent compared to 2020. In addition, the same noted that the number of guided tours increased by 44 per cent and the number of admissions increased by 26 per cent. This has been informed by a news report in Schengen Visa.
“Swiss museums came back to life in 2021 after the major waves of COVID-19, but without reaching pre-pandemic levels. Almost all indicators of museum activity in Switzerland increased compared with the previous year: the number of events rose by 77 per cent the number of guided tours by 44 per cent and the number of admissions by 26 per cent,” the statement of the Office reads.
Nonetheless, despite registering such a high number of visitors, it has been pointed out that figures still remained below the pre-pandemic levels when no COVID restrictions were in place. As for 2022 data, the authorities are to publish them next year and it is expected that the number of visitors in 2022 will be significantly higher compared to 2021.Back in August, when these data were released, the Swiss Federal Statistical Office said that a total of 16.9 million overnight stays were registered in the first six months of 2022, and at the same time, pointed out that foreign visitors registered a sharp increase.
According to data, foreign visitors spent 6.9 million overnight stays in Switzerland in the first half of 2022, representing an increase of 212.8 per cent. “The Swiss hotel sector recorded 16.9 million overnight stays in the first half of 2022, an increase of 47.3 per cent (+5.4 million) compared with the same period in 2021. Foreign visitors registered a sharp increase (+212.8 per cent / +4.7 million) at 6.9 million overnight stays,” the Federal Council stressed.
In addition to the above-mentioned, it was noted that domestic demand also increased, totalling ten million overnight stays (an increase of 8.0 per cent). Apart from sharing data on the number of overnight stays, the Swiss authorities also revealed that the expenses of foreign visitors remained below the pre-pandemic levels in the first few months of 2021.
