Love swimming but not a fan of chlorine or salt water? The Swinton Estate in North Yorkshire has just the solution, with the launch of its ‘wild swimming’ summer season in a private lake within the Estate – open to both guests of the Swinton Park Hotel and day visitors.
The Estate’s visitors experience the refreshing and invigorating activity of wild swimming in the beautiful natural surroundings of the North Yorkshire countryside. The wild swimming experience at Swinton Estate is suitable for all levels, but based in one of the smaller lakes on the Estate, is ideal for anyone first testing the waters in this growing outdoor pursuit.
Swinton Estate’s private lake is the perfect setting for a peaceful and safe wild swimming experience. The lake is located in the heart of the Estate’s 200 acres of landscaped grounds within 20,000 acres of stunning countryside. A platform at the water’s edge, with ladder down into the water provides an ideal access point into the lake.
“We are excited to launch our 2023 wild swimming season on our private lake. Swimming in open water is an amazing way to connect with nature, and we are delighted to offer this activity to our guests in such a beautiful location,” said Felicity Cunliffe-Lister, owner of Swinton Estate. ” The lake is open to hardy bathers all year round, but we officially launch our wild swimming season in May, when the water is usually a temperate 12-16 degrees Celsius – still invigorating, and some people may prefer to wear a wetsuit! As we move into the summer, the lake reaches temperatures up to 20 degrees – ideal on a balmy summer’s afternoon as a way of cooling off.”
Wild swimming is free for anyone staying on the Estate. Day visitors can purchase a Parklands & Gardens Pass for just £10 per day, or £60 for a whole year – ideal for those living nearby. Prebooking is highly recommended for wild swimming experiences at Swinton Estate, with a maximum of eight swimmers at a time, and tow floats provided for all participants; passes are available from the Swinton Country Club and Spa Reception.
The wild swimming season at Swinton Estate runs from May to September, from 7am until 9pm, or sunrise to sunset during the off-peak season. Following a wild swim, guests are welcome to relax in one of the nearby woodland hammocks or take a walk along the barefoot path in the Spa Garden –two of the self-guided holistic wellness activities offered on the Swinton Estate.
Other outdoor wellness pursuits at Swinton Estate include Meditative Sound Baths, featuring drums and Himalayan Singing Bowls, Forest Bathing, which features a two hour walk where participants connect with nature as they explore the woodland, and Reiki Drumming.
