The Spanish Ministry of the Interior has revealed that the Asylum and Refugee Office (ZAP) received 118,842 applications for international protection last year, which is an increase of 81.5 per cent more than in 2021 when 65,482 applications were registered. Such data also show that regarding nationality, among the leading countries of origin of applicants for international protection in 2022 in Spain were Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, and Morocco,
Meanwhile, according to the country of submission, the list of autonomous communities with the most significant number of applications is topped by the Community of Madrid, with 47,658 applications, followed by Andalusia with 11,722 and Catalonia with 10,396.
During 2022, the Ministry of the Interior resolved a total of 91,369 international protection files, which represents an increase of 27.2 per cent compared to 2021, when 71,833 files were resolved.
Last year, there was also an increase in the figures for resolutions for requests for stateless status, which reached a total of 1192 files, 38 per cent more than in 2021.
“Statelessness is a procedure aimed at identifying among the applicants those persons who are not considered as nationals by any State, in accordance with its legislation, and state that they lack nationality, in accordance with the provisions of the Convention on the Status of Stateless Persons, held in New York on September 28, 1954,” the statement issued by the Ministry reads.
Moreover, the Office of Asylum and Refugees, in 2022, granted 161,037 requests for temporary protection for those displaced by the Russian occupation in Ukraine.
