Jeju-do, Korea’s largest island, has long been the country’s favourite domestic holiday destination thanks to its beautiful beaches, lush countryside and hotels designed for rest and relaxation. The island’s UNESCO-listed Hallasan National Park showcases the majestic Hallasan Mountain, providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes and whose volcanic hills offer challenging hiking opportunities for the active traveller. Jeju’s beaches are very popular among surfers, and the National Park contains hidden waterfalls that are ideal for soaking.
Beyond the natural wonders of the ‘Island of the Gods’, as it is commonly known, Jeju embraces a distinct cultural identity, evident in its traditional stone houses, known as “hanok,” and the iconic Dol Hareubang statues scattered across the island. Jeju also offers a plethora of activities, from exploring lava tubes to indulging in local cuisine, such as the famed black pork and fresh seafood. Because of its geographic location off the Korean peninsula, Jeju’s cuisine is mainly centred around seafood; Jeju is also known for its oranges, which are uniquely high in antioxidant levels thanks to Jeju’s volcanic soil. The best time to visit Jeju Island is from November to May when the climate is the driest and when temperatures are mild.
