Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) aims to launch a Bus Connectivity Enhancement Programme geared towards making public transport more efficient.
The initiative stemmed from the results of a recent study’s findings on how public buses are an integral part of the country’s public transport system.
The study showed that the public bus system plays an essential role in complementing the rail network, providing residents and tourists convenient access to the rail system and alternative travel options.
Buses also serve as the primary mode of daily transportation for most individuals.
What does the new programme entail?
To keep public transport accessible and attractive for all commuters, LTA is launching the “Bus Connectivity Enhancement Programme” and will make the following enhancements to its bus network, in consultation with its team of Grassroots Advisers.
Implementing the Bus Connectivity Enhancement Programme calls for significant improvements to public bus services. These include the addition of trips to schedules, route adjustments, as well as new services to meet evolving travel needs.
Such changes will be based on regular reviews of the bus network.
New approaches, particularly for public transport services in new estates, are also key. In which case, the LTA plans to step up the pace of introducing bus services in new towns to better serve early batches of residents who moved into these new residential developments.
For residential estates farther away from major transport nodes and town centres, the LTA plans to introduce express feeder bus services to enhance connectivity for residents. These services will take more direct routes with fewer intermediate stops, reducing commuters’ travel time for the first and last mile of their journeys from major transport nodes.
