Vietnam Airlines goes with Sabre’s Network Planning and Optimisation technologies

Vietnam Airlines has opted for Sabre Corporation’s Network Planning and Optimization technology to push for its global growth.   Currently implementing an ambitious global expansion plan, Vietnam’s flag-carrier recently added routes to the US, Germany, India, Italy, and the Philippines, and is also exploring new destinations across Europe, the US, Canada, Australia, and Asia. Vietnam Airlines’ director for corporate planning and development Nguyen Quang Trung remarked: “Sabre’s Network Planning and Optimization tools will help us pinpoint profitable routes, create optimized schedules, and stay agile in a dynamic environment, enabling us to deliver greater value for both our passengers and our business.” Why Sabre?  Vietnam Airlines selected Sabre’s Fleet Manager to match capacity and aircraft type with demand, Profit Manager to accurately forecast and maximize network profitability, Network Manager to achieve hub optimization and enhanced codeshare planning, and Schedule Manager to deliver revenue-driven schedules across its network.  The airline also already distributes its fares and offers through Sabre’s global travel marketplace. Sabre’s general manager in the Asia Pacific for travel solutions airline sales Rakesh Narayanan expressed delight at being able to support Vietnam Airlines through this particular phase of its growth. Narayanan said: “This new agreement underscores the strength of Sabre’s technology in addressing the increasingly complex challenges faced by the world’s top airlines when it comes to creating optimum plans. We look forward to helping Vietnam Airlines to unlock further geographic and revenue growth.”

Vietnam Airlines launches direct Ho Chi Minh City – Beijing route

Vietnamese flag carrier Vietnam Airlines meets growing passenger demands to and from China with a new direct flight service from Ho Chi Minh City to Beijing, China from 30th March. Flights will head to and take off from the Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX), considered the largest in the world The new route will operate five times a week every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, using Airbus A321 aircraft. The airline is also set to expand the frequency of its Hanoi – Beijing route via Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) to seven flights per week. More options The launch of the new route and increased flight frequency to Beijing will provide passengers with more travel options, especially for those flying from southern Vietnam to the Chinese capital without the need for layovers. Beyond facilitating tourism and trade, the new route will also support bilateral cooperation, further reinforcing Vietnam Airlines’ role in connecting Vietnam with key markets in China and across Asia. With this new route, Vietnam Airlines will operate a total of six routes connecting Vietnam and China, including Hanoi – Beijing, Ho Chi Minh City – Beijing Daxing, Hanoi – Shanghai, Ho Chi Minh City – Shanghai, Hanoi – Guangzhou, and Ho Chi Minh City – Guangzhou.  The total number of weekly flights between the two countries will reach 40, catering to the growing travel demand.

Vietnam Airlines turns a profit in 2024

Vietnamese flag-carrier Vietnam Airlines ended 2024 with a consolidated pre-tax profit of around US$307.8 million. The figure is a vast improvement after the past four years which were marked by losses for the airline. In the consolidated financial statement, Vietnam Airlines reported a total revenue of US$4.26 billion, reflecting a 16.5 percent increase from 2023’s total. The statement also showed that the airline’s revenue and profit figures are now at the highest they have been in recent years. Relevant details In Q4-2024, Vietnam Airlines earned a total revenue of close to US$1.07 billion, a year-on-year increase of 11.5 percent. Cost reductions throughout the year enabled the airline to earn a gross profit of around US$174.64 million, making it a fourth consecutive quarter marked by profits. Vietnam Airlines’ profitability in the past year may be attributed to the full recovery of global flight networks throughout 2024, along with the introduction of new routes and codeshare partnerships with other airlines. Domestic ticket prices in Vietnam also rose significantly in the first half of the year, with some routes seeing an increase of up to 20 percent on average. Thanks to this development, Vietnam Airlines’ executive board is planning to present a new proposal to shareholders regarding the issuance of new shares to boost charter capital and update its restructuring plan for this year.

Vietnam Airlines poised for global expansion in 2025

Vietnam Airlines is set to expand its global reach this year, launching flights to Europe, North America, and Asia. At present, the airline operates non-stop flights on 91 routes, divided 34 domestic and 57 International routes.  Vietnam Airlines connects its home country with 54 destinations worldwide, ferrying around 24.1 million passengers and 230,000 tonnes of cargo in 2024. European options Vietnam Airlines is looking into Danish capital Copenhagen as a potential destination to augment its current five-hub European roster. It is also planning to make several adjustments to routes already flying out of Hanoi: London at least thrice weekly, Paris four times a week, Frankfurt five times weekly, and Munich twice a week. Beginning July 2025, Vietnam Airlines will be operating a thrice weekly service to and from Milan, Italy.  Flying down under At present, Vietnam Airlines flies to Sydney and Melbourne on a daily basis, and to Perth thrice a week from Ho Chi Minh City. The airline also flies from Hanoi to Sydney and Melbourne thrice weekly. Darwin could be Vietnam Airlines’ fourth potential destination in Australia this year. North America and Asia in 2025 Vietnam Airlines is presently evaluating feedback from its recent launch flights to Vancouver. Depending on results, Vancouver could become the airline’s first regular route to Canada. At the same time, Vietnam Airlines is considering flying new routes to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, Bangalore in India, and Dhaka in Bangladesh.  This is the first time the airline is looking to expand into Bangladesh and the Middle East.  While the airline already flies to Delhi and Mumbai, the Indian market remains ripe in terms of potential expansion.

Vietnam Airlines takes top spot among Southeast Asia’s top 10 travel brands

Vietnamese flag-carrier Vietnam Airlines took the top spot in Campaign Asia’s list of Southeast Asia’s top 10 travel brands for 2025. Vietnam Airlines received an overall best brand score of 76.05 percent, securing the first position and a comfortable lead over its nearest competitor, Philippine Airlines, which scored 63.15 percent.  The airline owes its top ranking to strong support in its domestic market, where it achieved the highest scores overall for customer service and buying experience, suggesting the national flag carrier is a firm favourite with Vietnamese consumers. At present, the airline serves over 70 destinations in 19 countries. Who made it to the list? As of press time, Campaign Asia’s top 10 travel brands in Southeast Asia are as follows: Vietnam Airlines Philippine Airlines Thai Airways Thai AirAsia Garuda Indonesia  Korea Aerospace Industries Malaysia Airlines Singapore Airlines Nok Air Cebu Pacific  The ranking is based on Campaign’s authoritative list of Southeast Asia’s top 50 brands, created in partnership with research firm Milieu Insight.  The brands were evaluated using attributes such as awareness, purchase frequency, quality, buying experience, customer service, trustworthiness, innovation, brand touchpoints (ease of use across all digital and offline interactions), and advocacy (degree of recommendation).

Etihad Airways and Vietnam airlines strengthen ties

Etihad Airways and Vietnam Airlines are set to work towards a collaboration for the benefit of their customers after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a potential agreement. The MoU reflects a dedication to exploring an enhanced working relationship, where the airlines plan to implement a broad collaboration including a codeshare, reciprocal loyalty programmes, cargo transport, maintenance, repair and overhaul, and ground handling. The two airlines have an existing interline agreement, allowing passengers to seamlessly transfer between flights on either carrier without the need to collect baggage or check in again. Jurriaan Stelder, Etihad’s Vice-President Alliances, said: "This MoU is an important milestone to establishing a long-term mutually beneficial collaboration, opening the door for both airlines to explore the benefits of a deeper relationship. Our collective ambition is to further strengthen both airlines’ ability to provide and enhance service to our customers.” Nguyen Chien Thang, Vietnam Airlines’ Executive Vice President, said:  “We are delighted to sign this MoU with Etihad Airways, marking an important milestone in expanding our relationship. Through comprehensive collaboration, including codeshare, loyalty programmes, cargo, and technical support, we believe we will deliver exceptional benefits to the customers of both airlines and further strengthen connectivity between Vietnam and the UAE.” The MoU was signed at a ceremony in Dubai on Monday, 28 October in front of government and business leaders from the UAE and Vietnam.

Vietnam Airlines resumes daily nonstop flights from London Heathrow

Vietnam flag-carrier Vietnam Airlines resumes daily flight frequencies from London Heathrow to Vietnam this winter, with daily nonstop services to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. The service resumed operations on Monday, 28th October. The APEX five star-rated airline will operate four flights per week to Hanoi and three per week to Ho Chi Minh City, all on next-gen Boeing B787-9 Dreamliners. Vietnam Airlines offers the UK’s only nonstop flights to Vietnam, operating from Heathrow Terminal 4.  The flights are carefully scheduled to offer convenient overnight journeys in both directions, with onward connections via Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to multiple destinations throughout Vietnam, Asia, and Australasia, including Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, China, South Korea, Japan, and Australia.

Emirates signs understandings with Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet

Emirates signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Vietnam Airlines and VietJet during the Vietnam-UAE Business Forum. These agreements aim to strengthen connectivity and offer more travel choices between Dubai and its Vietnamese gateways Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. The MoUs were signed on the sidelines of the Vietnam - UAE Business Forum, held at the Hilton Dubai Palm Jumeirah hotel in Dubai on 28 October. Emirates deputy president and chief commercial officer Adnan Kazim attended the signing ceremony along with government leaders, ministers, and business representatives from both countries.  Airline senior-vice-president for commercial operations in the Far East Orhan Abbas delivered a keynote highlighting the airline’s commitment to deepening its presence in Vietnam, a market it has been serving since 2012, supporting trade and tourism links between the UAE and Vietnam, as well as offering customers convenient travel options. A market offering major opportunities Kazim commented: “Enhancing our cooperation with like-minded partners like Vietnam Airlines and VietJet is integral to our core commercial strategy to better connect customers across points beyond our own network. Vietnam is a market that presents tremendous opportunities to boost tourism and trade as a key hub in Southeast Asia, and Emirates supports the UAE government’s ongoing efforts to elevate its existing economic ties with Vietnam.” He added that the decades-long cooperation with Vietnam Airlines has enabled Emirates to enhance connectivity between Vietnam and Dubai, and this new understanding is seen as an opportunity to explore further elevating this partnership while also establishing a new strategic cooperation with VietJet.  Kazim concluded by saying: “We look forward to growing our footprint in Vietnam and exploring more opportunities to widen the scope of our partnerships in the future.” What each understanding entails  The Emirates MoU with Vietnam Airlines sets the framework to expand the current cooperation in place between both airlines. This includes enhancing connectivity on routes beyond the existing interline as well as the potential to add reciprocal loyalty benefits. The airlines will also enter exploratory discussions around potential collaborations across cargo and technical services to create seamless experiences for travellers. The long-standing relationship between Emirates and Vietnam Airlines, which began with a bilateral interline cooperation in 1994, has helped connect customers to 22 domestic and 15 regional points in Vietnam Airline’s network, as well as 12 points in Emirates’ global network. With VietJet, on the other hand, both airlines will explore joint initiatives to help promote visitor traffic between the UAE and Vietnam, and strengthen the commercial cooperation between both carriers. The MoU will further aim to enhance connectivity to popular destinations in VietJet’s domestic and regional network via Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Danang, among others, while offering VietJet customers increased access to Emirates’ global network via its Dubai hub on a single itinerary and one baggage policy.

The establishment of deeper ties with local air carriers reflects the broader efforts of both governments to foster greater tourism and business links between the two nations. The UAE and Vietnam have also signed a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA), the first free-trade agreement Vietnam has established with a Middle East country, aiming to boost trade and investment. According to the UAE Ministry of Economy, in the first half of 2024, bilateral trade between the two countries surpassed $3.2 billion, a 43 per cent increase on-year. Emirates currently operates daily services to both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, utilising its Boeing 777 and offering travellers seamless access between Vietnam and popular destinations across Europe, the Middle East and the Americas. The airline will further add a second daily flight to Ho Chi Minh City starting from 15 January 2025, catering to the growing demand for travel ahead of the Lunar New Year festival.

Vietnam Airlines and Garuda Indonesia expand strategic partnership

Vietnam Airlines and Garuda Indonesia recently signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) geared towards boosting strategic partnership between the two national airlines.  This new understanding aims to strengthen and expand cooperation, focusing on enhancing the passenger and airfreight transportation capabilities between Vietnam and Indonesia.   Vietnam Airlines president and CEO Le Hong Ha stated: “This partnership not only strengthens the position of both national carriers but also facilitates the provision of high-quality services for our passengers travelling between Vietnam and Indonesia. We believe this will bring significant benefits to our passengers and further promote trade and cultural exchanges between the two nations.”  Garuda Indonesia president and chief executive Irfan Setiaputra remarked: “This strategic partnership marks an important milestone in our ongoing commitment to strengthening regional connectivity and enhancing travel experiences for our passengers across Southeast Asia. As two of the leading airlines in the region, Garuda Indonesia and Vietnam Airlines share a common vision: to provide world-class service, greater convenience, and expanded travel options for our customers. By leveraging our combined networks, this partnership will allow passengers more seamless access to key destinations across Indonesia, Vietnam, and beyond, fostering greater tourism, trade, and cultural exchange. This partnership will not only enhance connectivity but also reinforce both airlines' positions in the global aviation market.” What this agreement entails Under the terms of the understanding, both airlines will work to improve cooperation through joint marketing campaigns, expanding codeshare agreements, joint ventures. and exploring services such as aircraft leasing, ground services, technical maintenance and cargo operations. Likewise, the cooperation will see both airlines enhance passenger experience, meet the growing demand for transportation between the two countries, and foster sustainable development in the aviation industry. The strategic partnership between Vietnam Airlines and Garuda Indonesia is expected not only to promote the growth of the aviation and tourism industries in both countries but also strengthen the economic and cultural ties, laying a solid foundation for further developments in the future.
