South Australians are preparing for an aviation milestone, as United Airlines announces the first-ever direct flight from Adelaide to North America. From 11 December 2025, travellers will be able to fly non-stop to San Francisco, marking a historic connection between South Australia and the United States. This new 15-hour flight opens up countless opportunities for both leisure and business travel, while showcasing the growing prominence of Adelaide as a gateway city. A Seamless Connection Across Continents The seasonal service will operate three times a week—on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays—using United Airlines’ cutting-edge Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. This aircraft, featuring 257 seats, includes the comfort of 48 Polaris Business Class and 21 Premium Plus seats, ensuring an elevated travel experience for passengers. Adelaide departures are scheduled for 2:55 pm, with arrivals in San Francisco the same day. Return flights will arrive in Adelaide at 9:30 am, making for convenient travel both ways. Travellers departing from Adelaide can also take advantage of one-stop connections to more than 75 US destinations, from iconic cities like New York and Las Vegas to cultural hubs like Chicago and Seattle. Even Perth passengers, who currently lack direct access to the US, can seamlessly connect through this route, further enhancing accessibility for Western Australia. United’s Commitment to Australia With the addition of Adelaide to its network, United Airlines becomes the only carrier offering direct flights between the US and four major Australian cities—Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and now Adelaide. This strategic expansion, adding almost 25,000 seats annually between Australia and the US, underscores United’s dedication to providing unmatched connectivity. United Airlines Managing Director for APAC Airport Operations, Sam Shinohara, highlighted the significance of this new service: “Direct flights are a big factor in people deciding where to travel. This game-changing flight makes United the only airline to offer nonstop service to four major Australian cities, enhancing travel options for more Australians than ever before.” Boosting South Australia’s Tourism Industry SA Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison celebrated the announcement as a historic collaboration that will have transformative benefits for South Australia. “South Australia has been named one of the most welcoming regions on the planet by Booking.com, and this route reflects the growing appeal of our state. It’s a wonderful coincidence that Napa Valley lies one hour north of San Francisco, just as the Barossa is one hour north of Adelaide—creating exciting opportunities for wine tourism and cultural exchange.” Adelaide Airport Ltd Managing Director Brenton Cox echoed the excitement, emphasising the potential for long-term success: “We intend to make this service a great success and build this towards a year-round route in the future.” A New Horizon United Airlines’ Adelaide-San Francisco route is a breakthrough moment for aviation in South Australia. This direct connection not only links two vibrant regions but also fosters closer ties between Australia and the United States. From seamless travel options to unparalleled experiences, this milestone redefines international connectivity for Australians, while bringing global travellers closer to South Australia’s unique charm. As this partnership takes flight, the future of travel in the Top End has never looked brighter. United Airlines adopts usage of Generative AI
United Airlines has begun using Language Learning Models (LLMs) and artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, to inform customers about the status of their flights, which has resulted in a 6% boost in customer satisfaction. United Airlines is exploring new waters with generative artificial intelligence initiatives used to enhance customer experience and process excellence (which is the term given to improving how a business creates and delivers value to its customers). The airline has deployed sophisticated AI models to provide better, more transparent, and human-like communication about flight delays, cancellations, and service disruptions. Using United’s core data architectural backbone, including the United Data Hub and an AI and ML (Machine Learning) platform dubbed “Mars,” the airline has released a handful of models into production for employees and customers. Speaking to CIO, the United Airlines Chief Information Officer, Jason Birnbaum, said this about the airline’s use of AI and LLMs: “We worked hard to fine-tune this model to take operational feeds, notes from our operations teams, the crew, and all these different sources of data, and have AI take all this data and create a narrative that is more transparent, empathetic, decisive, and clear as we can be. As opposed to a canned message, we try to write a specific story about what’s going on with your flight. People hear the specifics, and they understand it and their blood pressure goes down. Our storytellers still look at the messages to make sure they’re within the realm of what we want to communicate but we’re getting much more comfortable with it.” United utilizes ChatGPT for secure employee experimental use and an LLM for external users called “Every Flight Has a Story.” This flight-status service was released earlier this year and provides customers with faster, more transparent, context-rich information with efficiency. United Airlines has used the LLM to send out more than 100,000 push notifications and has identified 90 other use cases for the software. United’s “ “Every Flight Has a Story” LLM utilizes the “Mars” platform, which leverages Amazon Web Services (AWS) to automate digital notifications, streamline delay communications, and reduce the manual workload for human customer service agents. This has been achieved by automating many of the routine communications and personalizing responses at scale. Francesca Vasquez, Vice President at AWS, admired the airline’s utilization of their platform for its innovative approach and emphasized the potential of generative AI in personalizing and automating communications. He said: “United is just getting started. Historically, United storytellers had to manually edit templates, which took time. United realized that gen AI could automate most of these messages, freeing up their staff to focus on the more challenging delay issues — and an informed customer, for sure, is a happier customer.” United is one of the earliest users of Amazon’s Sagemaker ML platform. According to AWS Vice President of Technology Mai-Lan Tomsen Bukovec, the airline’s use of these tools is going to become a game-changer. In the future, United Airlines aims to use AI to help improve baggage handling, optimize flight routes, and improve predictive maintenance for aircraft.

United Airlines extends flights between New York and Tenerife into the winter season
For the third consecutive year, the U.S. airline, United Airlines, will connect New York and Tenerife with a direct flight, and starting this year, will operate a significantly extended service. The connection between Newark Liberty International Airport (New Jersey) and Tenerife South, will resume on 1 June 2024 and will operate three times weekly until at least the end of March 2025. The Vice-President of the Island Council and Councillor for Tourism, Lope Afonso, said: "This is undoubtedly one of the most important pieces of news of the year in terms of air connectivity. It is an agreement that we have been working on for a long time, which began to take shape during the last term of office and which we have been able to conclude after months of intense negotiations at Turismo de Tenerife. This represents a unique opportunity to consolidate the destination in one of the most sought-after feeder markets. It best suits the quality profile we are committed to in our strategy of sustainable management of the destination, due to its interest in the values of the island and our cultural offer and the spending capacity at the destination.” The CEO of Turismo de Tenerife, Dimple Melwani, said: "The extension of the direct connection between New York/Newark and Tenerife South is a great opportunity for Tenerife in a market whose interest in the island continues to grow and where we have seen indirect growth in recent years in travellers from the United States and Canada in the winter months." Melwani adds that "the extension of direct flights for the winter is great news for the island and is of vital importance in successfully implementing Tenerife's strategy of accessing better target markets with longer stays and spending capacity at the destination, and for the business opportunities that can be generated for Tenerife in different sectors: audiovisual, MICE, green energy, digital economy and innovation, among others." The Country Sales Manager Spain of United Airlines, Antonio de Toro, said: “As the only airline connecting North America with the Canary Islands, we are delighted to return to Tenerife with a significantly extended service that now includes the winter season, offering our customers on both sides of the Atlantic even greater travel choice. Customers can take advantage of a direct connection to and from the U.S., as well as an unrivalled route network from United’s New York/Newark hub, offering convenient nonstop connections to destinations across the Americas.” United’s service will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from the United States (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays during the winter season); and Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from Tenerife (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays during the winter season). The flight will take approximately seven hours and will be operated with a B757-200 aircraft, featuring a total of 176 seats – 16 flat-bed seats in United PolarisSM business and 160 seats in economy, including 42 Economy PlusSM seats with added legroom and increased personal space. Booming market The number of American tourists taking staying in Tenerife last year stood at 36,531, compared with 26,507 in 2022. Furthermore, 62% of tourism from this origin using establishments on the island takes place in the winter months, compared with 38% in the summer months (June-September). Tenerife's strategy in the North American market has been reinforced in recent years. United Airlines Plans First Nonstop Houston-Tokyo-Haneda Flight
United Airlines announced that it has applied to the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) for daily nonstop flights between Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport and Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. United will be the first U.S. carrier to offer nonstop service between Houston and Haneda if approved. This new route will serve the rapidly growing Houston region’s population, 240+ Japanese-affiliated companies, and customers residing in areas across the Southern United States. The flights will connect 64 cities in the Southern United States to Haneda, accounting for about 575,000 annual Tokyo bookings, or 21% of total U.S. mainland – Tokyo demand. While Houston has only one international airline flight to Haneda, New York/Newark has five, Los Angeles has seven, Chicago has three, and Washington, D.C. and Dallas/Fort Worth have two. This new route will increase market parity while providing needed seats and flexibility to business and leisure travellers. “Between its steadily growing population and booming energy and innovation sectors, the Houston area has transformed into a critical hub for business and leisure travel,” said Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances at United Airlines. “If awarded by the DOT, this new service will enhance travel options to Tokyo Haneda for consumers across the Southern United States and strengthen the economic partnership between Japan and more than 240 affiliated businesses in the greater Houston area.” United has worked diligently to develop a Japanese network to promote competition and provide affordable and consistent service options for U.S. travellers while operating the world’s largest route network of any U.S. airline. United’s Tokyo service now comprises several flights from the airline’s seven U.S. hubs to Haneda and Narita airports. United is Houston’s largest airline, with over 14,000 employees, over 400 daily departures, and over 70 international daily departures. According to a new Compass Lexecon study, United’s Huston hub and foreign visitor spending on United and Star Alliance member flights support an estimated $5.3 billion in gross domestic product in Texas each year, and United’s direct employment in Houston contributed $1.2 billion to economic activity in 2022. Houston is a significant commercial hub for health care, manufacturing, and, most notably, the energy sector. Houston and the state of Texas have built significant economic ties with Japan due to their status as an energy powerhouse. The U.S. Department of Energy recently chose Houston as one of seven regional clean hydrogen hubs in collaboration with Japanese company Mitsubishi Power Americas. Approximately 70,000 people are employed by Japanese-owned businesses in Texas, including around 240 Japanese-affiliated enterprises in Houston. Furthermore, Texas is home to 53 Fortune 500 companies, 24 of which are in Houston. According to the Texas Development Corporation, Japanese firms have reported 119 investment projects in Texas over the past ten years, totalling $6.9 billion in capital investment and 19,620 jobs created. On the other hand, Texas companies reported 25 investment projects in Japan, totalling $799 million in capital investment and 1,667 new jobs. Houston’s relationship with Japan extends beyond economic ties; the country’s regional Consulate-General is also located in Houston.

Total third-quarter top-line revenue increased 12.5% year on year, resulting in a record revenue quarter at the upper end of projections. United enjoyed a solid and consistent domestic demand environment in the quarter, with a 9% year-over-year revenue increase, exceeding second-quarter performance. Close-in bookings increased in August and September, with both months exceeding year-over-year demand. Profits in the international space were at an all-time high in both the Atlantic and Pacific regions. Revenue in the Atlantic region increased by 15% compared to the same quarter in 2022 and 70% compared to the same quarter in 2019. Despite capacity remaining 24% lower than in the third quarter of 2019, Pacific revenue topped third-quarter 2019 levels. Domestic revenues were the second most significant in the third quarter, and the domestic network remained profitable. The company has developed a winning strategy for providing customers with options for the desired service level. Premium product demand is robust, with outstanding results in the premium economy cabin, where revenue exceeded capacity increase since its launch in 2019. Premium product revenue increased 20% year on year in the quarter, accounting for more than half of total passenger revenue. Basic Economy has also been a popular option for customers and an excellent competitive offering, with revenue for that product increasing by 50% year over year in the third quarter. United continues to recognise the value of an award-winning airline loyalty programme. The third quarter continued a multi-year trend of new MileagePlus members, achieving a record for third-quarter enrolments and nearly tripling the number of new members compared to the same period five years ago. Spending across the U.S. card portfolio is up double digits year to date in the first three quarters of 2022, and this third quarter saw more miles redeemed across the scheme for award travel than any third quarter in programme history. “Thank you to our extraordinary United team, who delivered a record-setting operational performance for our customers in August and September,” said United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby. “Our strategy of diversifying our revenue streams, capitalising on growth opportunities, and constantly innovating to improve our products for our customers is bearing fruit.” Our United Next plan is working well, and we are on schedule to meet our financial targets.”
