Airbus: Thailand could produce up to 5 million tonnes of SAF annually
Sustainability officials at aviation manufacturer Airbus pointed out that Thailand has the potential to produce up to five million tonnes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) per annum. Company chief sustainability officer Julie Kitcher remarked on this at the Airbus Industry Outreach event held in Bangkok, Thailand last 11th April. Kitcher said: “Thanks to its strong agricultural sector, Thailand has rich potential as a producer of SAF, with extensive feedstocks including molasses, agricultural waste such as rice straw and rice husk, corn cobs and leaves, and manure. It’s extremely encouraging to see Thailand’s ethanol industry considering SAF production. It is also very encouraging to see this 'industry cooperation' approach as this mindset will be needed in developing and validating data such as Life Cycle Assessment data for new feedstocks.” Thailand’s place in the global SAF sector Several projects are already under development to produce SAF from used cooking oil, such as that announced by Bangchak, as well as PTT Global Chemical’s initial foray into SAF via a co-processing pathway. At the same time, Airbus executives note that alcohol-to-jet fuel derived from ethanol holds great promise here too. It should also be noted that Thailand’s strategy to increase the number of electric vehicles on its roads nationwide will reduce demand for bioethanol in the road transport sector, freeing up more for use in SAF. Kitcher said: “At Airbus, we look forward to working with the Thai government and SAF producers to help develop the industry.” She added that there were two critical challenges that Thailand needs to address if it is to succeed as a primary source of SAF for the global aviation sector. What needs to be done? The first of these two issues is the need to pull new SAF technologies through their first stages of development, as these are the points where developmental and financial risks are at their highest. Kitcher said of this: “We are also working to support SAF projects here in south-east Asia and Thailand. For example, we signed a memorandum of understanding with CP last year to explore the potential of SAF production from agricultural waste. We are also keen to help bring other new feedstocks on-stream here, too.” The second issue that needs to be dealt with involves gaining a thorough understanding of the various feedstocks here. According to Kitcher: “What we’ve learned at Airbus is that it’s not simply enough to understand the potential production capacity of a given feedstock. You also need an in-depth understanding of its location, accessibility and the costs of collecting and transporting it. Thailand has already made strong progress in gathering valuable data and information about where the country’s feedstocks are located.” Keeping this in mind, policymakers play a key role when it comes to developing the Thai SAF industry. Also, attaining success will require a high level of coordination between different stakeholders and the setting out of a clear ambition and roadmap. Kitcher pointed out that the swift publication of a national SAF roadmap, including a 1 percent blending target for 2026, would provide potential producers and investors with the clarity they need.
Thailand surpasses 35 million arrivals target for this year
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced that international tourist arrivals for this year surpassed its target of 35 million visitors, generating over 1.8 trillion Baht in tourism revenue. This landmark achievement highlights Thailand’s strong tourism rebound and sets the foundation for an even greater year ahead, as 2025 has been declared the Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year. With targets for 2025 to welcome between 36 and 39 million international visitors and generate 1.98 to 2.23 trillion Baht in tourism revenue, Thailand is poised to strengthen its position as a premier global tourism hub that offers exceptional experiences whilst fostering sustainable growth across the sector. What helped Thailand hit the target? TAT governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool credited this remarkable achievement to strategic government initiatives that enhanced Thailand’s appeal as a world-class destination. As of Friday, 27th December, Thailand welcomed a total of 35,047,501 visitors from around the world. Thailand was able to meet its targets thanks to several notable policies, including the visa exemption for citizens of 93 countries which allows qualified travellers to stay in the country for up to 60 days. The elimination of TM.6 immigration forms at 16 key border crossings to streamline entry processes also drove up arrivals numbers. These measures significantly improved travel convenience, encouraging more visitors to opt for Thailand as their destination of choice. The world comes flying in The aviation sector also played a vital role, with international airlines resuming routes and introducing new ones from primary and secondary cities worldwide. This expansion increased total airline seat capacity into Thailand to 47 million in 2024, an increase of around 26 percent compared to 2023. Over 311 additional flights were scheduled during the December high season, adding over 70,000 seats. Adding to Thailand’s appeal were high-profile events and festivals, such as the Amazing Thailand Countdown 2024, the Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2024, and fan meet concerts featuring Thai and international artists. Attractions inspired by popular TV series, music videos, and movie filming locations further captivated global audiences, expanding the market for quality tourists from short-haul and long-haul regions.
Agoda: Thai marriage equality law could boost annual tourist arrivals by up to 4 million
Digital travel platform Agoda’s latest study reveals how Thailand’s landmark marriage equality legislation is set to deliver an additional four million international visitors per year within two years of its enactment. The said legislation also stands to increase tourism revenues by nearly US$ 2 billion per annum. Agoda’s The Economic Impact of Marriage Equality on Thailand’s Tourism Industry study measures the projected economic opportunity presented by Thailand’s move to adopt marriage equality beginning 22 January 2025. As the first jurisdiction in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, and Asia’s third after Taiwan in 2019 and Nepal last year, the initiative positions Thailand to capture a larger slice of the global rainbow tourism market, valued at over US$ 200 billion annually. Agoda vice-president of corporate development and executive sponsor for Agoda Pride Timothy Hughes said: “The LGBTQIA+ community is a powerful economic force with a strong appetite for travel. While already a popular destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers, this move is expected to further solidify Thailand’s reputation as an inclusive holiday option. At Agoda, we are excited to see the substantive economic impact that the influx of travellers will have on local businesses and communities. We will continue working with our local partners to deliver exceptional travel experiences for this community.” Relevant findings The report quantifies the projected trickle-down benefits of the legislative move to the wider Thai economy. It is estimated that, within two years, the influx of an additional 4 million international visitors annually could: boost tourism receipts by approximately USD2 billion each year—of which, around USD 0.7 billion would go to accommodations, USD 0.4 billion to food and beverage services, USD 0.4 billion to retail spending, USD 0.2 billion to domestic transportation, with USD 0.2 billion across other areas including entertainment and medical services; support an additional 152,000 FTE jobs, 76,000 directly within the tourism industry and a further 76,000 across the broader Thai economy, and; lift Thailand’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 0.3 percent. While Thailand is already established as a leading tourism destination, this legislative development is set to bolster its appeal to LGBTQIA+ tourists seeking welcoming destinations, especially as travellers worldwide demonstrate an increasing preference for diversity-driven and inclusive travel experiences. As only the third market within Asia to introduce marriage equality, Thailand is poised to become a regional hub for LGBTQIA+ couples from neighbouring countries who are seeking to celebrate their union in a country that recognises same-sex marriage. With many cities in Thailand already established as prominent destination wedding venues, the marriage equality legislation could also boost Thailand’s wedding industry, along with positive contributions into related sectors like hotels, catering, and entertainment.
Thailand Hoping for Two Million Russian Tourists in 2024
Thai tourism officials are hoping for 2,000,000 Russian tourists to visit the Kingdom of Thailand next year. According to the Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) Moscow office, Asian tourist paradise could hit this record number if it maintains its ‘friendly country’ status with Russian government officials. Traditionally, Thailand registers an influx of visitors from Russia during the high season, but now, Russian tourists are flocking to Thailand all year round, due to severe worldwide sanctions imposed on Russia over its unprovoked and brutal war of aggression launched against neighboring Ukraine. With EU airspace closed to Russian flights since last March, once-popular vacation spots like Italy, Spain, and Greece are now more or less off limits for Russian holidaymakers. The European Union also suspended a 2007 visa facilitation agreement with Russia last year, while some countries, like Poland, Lithuania and Estonia banned entry for Russians, even those with Schengen area visas. With Europe tightening the rules, Thailand is already seeing a boom in Russian visitors. The kingdom has already seen 840,000 visitors from Russian Federation this year, ranking it among the top five choices for Russian travelers. And this number is expected to reach 1.3 million by the end of the year, or match the record 1.48 million recorded in 2019. Thailand was the fourth-most popular destination for Russian tourists last year, behind Türkiye with 3.7 million trips, the United Arab Emirates with 900,000, and Egypt with 760,000. Even though Russians tend to stay longer and spend more money than other nationalities when in Thailand, TAT cautioned that Russian airlines do not yet have enough Thai flights scheduled to meet the increased demand, while Thai carriers primarily concentrate on short haul flights. Accordingly, TAT said that it will encourage more airlines to open Russia-Thailand routes, and promote Thai tourism via connecting flights.
