‘Start-ups’ in focus at the ‘The Innovation Hub’ at the Dubai International Boat Show
Dubai International Boat Show, the global luxury yacht and lifestyle show, has once again underscored its position as a global assembly space attracting visitors and exhibitors from more than 60 countries, while providing a stage both for UAE-based maritime companies and overseas start-ups. Throughout the five-day event, which runs until 23 February, DIBS is welcoming 1,000 brands and 200-plus yachts and watercrafts to Dubai Harbour for the 31st edition of the annual yachting experience. Start-ups in the spotlight Brought to the show by Yachting Ventures, the leading media and events platform for start-ups and emerging tech in leisure marine, this year’s DIBS Innovation Hub is providing a space for start-ups from countries including Kuwait, Egypt, and France to exhibit their products and services. Lionel Pean, President of Seafloatech, which has designed, tested and perfected a mooring line system with a gloat interface, said: “As a young company launching new products, having the support of DIBS is invaluable in helping us navigate the challenge of risk. Dubai is a truly magical place where anything seems possible, especially with the rapid development happening at sea. For a company like ours, DIBS’ support will likely help us grow faster here than anywhere else in the world." Start-ups exhibiting in the hub include Airmarker, which manufactures signal balloons to support vessels in distress; Hydroflyer, which focuses on electric hydrofoil crafts; Waves, a mobile application that eases the booking process of boat-led travel adventures; Mulca Technologies, a fractional ownership model; and Yacht Coin, a cryptocurrency tailored for the luxury motor yacht industry. Juan Crosby, Chief Operating Officer – iWarranty an integrated SaaS platform digitising warranty management to reduce e-waste, said: “DIBS has been fantastic in providing a platform to showcase what we do. We feel fortunate and proud to have met a diverse range of people and have participated in various panels, fully immersing ourselves in the DIBS experience. Dubai is remarkable in its vision for the future—constantly thinking ahead and building today for what’s to come. We are similarly wired and hope to support and contribute to that.” The initiative is not only cost effective for the start-ups, but also provides support in their first exhibition in Dubai to maximise relationship-building and awareness. Joris Van Aelst, Founding Owner & Creative Director at Bcraft, a family business creating bespoke crafts for adventure and leisure said: “DIBS plays a crucial role in supporting innovation, making it the perfect platform for us. I visited a few years ago, and the growth has been incredible – we want to be part of that journey. The city is one of the fastest-growing in the world, driven by innovation and a future-focused mindset. With its open-minded approach and ever-evolving skyline, the sky truly is the limit.” Proudly UAE While the show is widely established as one of the key dates on the global calendar for international maritime corporations, the annual exhibition also continues to help and highlight local companies with its returning Proudly UAE segment. The feature serves as an important platform to shine an international spotlight and provide exposure in a bid to raise awareness on an industry wide scale. Colonel Ali Abdullah Al Qusib Al Naqbi, Deputy Director of the Ports Police Station, said: “Dubai Police’s participation in the Dubai International Boat Show reinforces its role in enhancing maritime security and safety in the emirate. At this show we're presenting the latest innovations including smart security services, maritime search and rescue equipment, monitoring technologies, and artificial intelligence solutions, such as environmentally friendly electric boats, all of which are used to keep the wider community safe. Additionally, the introduction of the ‘Sail Safely’ service aims to improve security response through an innovative future vision, further supporting the UAE’s maritime sector.” Exhibiting alongside Dubai Police, a range of brands are sharing insights into the flourishing local maritime scene and the services each affords. These include boat designers and manufacturers Ocean Boats; a local ship, boat and luxury yachting repair service called Nomad Marine Services; and the popular Dubai International Marine Club – long considered one of Dubai’s most prominent marine sports clubs. Flavio Gatti, Manager at Al Fajer Marine LLC, the UAE based boat builders, said: "The Dubai International Boat Show is undoubtedly the best in the Middle East, it's vital for us to be here, and we're proud to be a local brand within such a momentous event. We manufacture locally-crafted boats at Dubai Maritime City, Port Rashid under the ownership of HH Sheikh Hasher bin Maktoum Al Maktoum - this event is especially significant for us. It gives us the opportunity to showcase our products to visitors, both local and international, helping to raise awareness about our business and cement our name even more so in the industry. Here today, we're presenting three vessels including one from our best-selling ‘Bullet’ series, a 60-foot monohull with 4-bed and 1-bath, running 2000 HP on 5 engines.”

After hearing the proposals, four winners have been announced to join the TravelTech Lab, for their solutions that create more engaging experiences and reshape distribution within the TravelTech industry. SITA technology to power French start-up Alltheway’s new doorstep baggage delivery service
SITA technology is powering a new and convenient baggage service from French start-up Alltheway, enabling passengers traveling from Paris to check in and drop off their bags from their home or city center hotel and deliver it directly to their destination. The company will also soon release an airport carousel bag pick-up and city delivery solution. Alltheway will allow passengers and airlines to track bags on and off airport. Alltheway agents arrive at the passenger’s hotel or home, weigh and seal the bag, and check it in with the airline. Using SITA Bag Journey, Alltheway integrates with an airline’s tracking systems and shares real-time baggage tracking information every step of its off-airport journey. Alltheway will also receive the baggage tracking data collected during the airport’s handling operations. This information is then shared with the passenger through the Alltheway application so they can track their bags in real time. Agents also leverage SITA’s Flight Data Global which provides information on customer flight check-in and departure times. This helps agents plan pick-up times and make sure bags arrive at the airport on time. With visitors to the city surging with the Rugby World Cup taking place in France this month and the Paris Olympics in 2024, Alltheway has partnered with Air France/KLM and hospitality group Accor to offer this service to their customers. SITA’s solution highlights the increased demand from passengers for off-airport services while seamlessly connecting their air travel with other modes of transport such as cruise or rail. Leveraging knowledge of the highly integrated aviation industry, SITA helps travel tech solution providers such as Alltheway offer new off-airport services while assisting airlines in integrating their services with rail and cruise. Emilie Gazeau, CEO and Founder at Alltheway, said: “We have seen a growing demand for off-airport baggage services from a wide range of passengers, including families that have a huge number of bags to transport or business travelers that need the freedom to move across the city without being burdened by their baggage. With SITA, we can connect the dots between the airline and passenger so that we deliver the traveler the peace of mind that their bags are in safe hands.” Sergio Colella, President of Europe at SITA: “Looking at the findings of SITA’s 2023 Passenger IT Insights report, passengers have made it clear that they expect to book more intermodal trips in the coming year while expressing a strong interest in technology to streamline processes such as baggage handling across the entire journey. With our baggage solutions, we are pleased to deliver that experience to Alltheway’s customers.”
J2 adventures introduces a start-up touring concept for luxury Jewish travel adventures
If you think Israel is simply archeological ruins and spiritual legacy, think again. J2 adventures (which stands for Jewish Journeys) is the latest, hippest tour operator to rethink how its clients experience Jewish culture around the world. At the core of J2 adventures is an out-of-the-box approach to Jewish cultural travel that invites participants to engage with questions of identity, diversity, and pluralism. J2 adventures is designed to meet the needs of families and groups by integrating thematic, custom designed excursions around specialized topics and interest areas. Want a culinary foodie tasting experience on your Jewish Journey? Check. Excited about the local Israeli art scene? Check. Have teenage adventure outdoor junkies in your family? No problem. J2 adventures has it all. Through their diverse collection of personalized mini adventures, this tour company makes the point that Jewish travel is not just one thing, and it is never boring. “No tour, no itinerary, and no group is cookie-cutter with J2 adventures. Rather, each group and itinerary and experience is carved and catered to individual needs and situations,” said Rabbi David Seth Kirshner, Senior Rabbi, Temple Emanu-El, Closter, New Jersey. “Beyond Israel, our community has partnered with J2 adventures on missions to explore the Jewish Communities of Morocco, Portugal, Germany, Poland, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Argentina and more. They have been our partner on three continents and around the globe!” Guests of J2 adventures can meet up with a diverse hip hop musical group in Tel Aviv-Yafo and explore Jaffa through the eyes of System Ali, a local hip hop musical group comprised of Jewish and Arab artists that tackle issues of minority identity and community rights in Tel Aviv; or experience a spectacularly colourful women’s glassblowing workshop in the ancient city of Safed led by a local visual artist. Adventurous travellers can go whitewater rafting on the Jordan River or hop on an ATV and blast through the Desert – an off-the-beaten path experience. In Rabat, Morocco, travellers get to experience Association Mimouna, an organization of Muslim students who honor the country’s Jewish traditions and promote Jewish-Muslim friendship. These tours are fresh, different, and an authentic look into the lives of locals in their featured destinations. J2 adventures co-founders Kathy Eid & Guy Millo share a love and passion for what they do, and the two principals have spent a collective 30 years in the Jewish travel business and crafted a fresh new company, which launched after the Pandemic. With a strong focus on the educational nature of their tours, Kathy & Guy partnered together with a group of educators, experienced destination guides and travel professionals, and J² adventures came into being with a strong ethos around impact/mission driven trips. “These last few years gave us the opportunity to re-evaluate how we share Jewish culture with our travellers,” said J2 adventures co-founder Guy Millo. “We have thought deeply about the lens through which we present a destination and the messages embedded in our experiences. Jewish Journeys is not a travel company. Travel is used as a vehicle to search for identity. Identity can be unearthed in many different touchpoints and powerful moments.” Much of the 4,000-year-old Jewish experience has been on the road. J2 adventures journeys to places all around the world – from Israel to Europe to Morocco to Egypt and to the Far East – all follow the path and tell the stories of the Jewish people in motion.

These funds will fuel further expansion and increased profitability for roadsurfer in both the U.S. and Europe. In its sixth year of operation, roadsurfer is boasting a fleet of nearly 5.000 compact camper vans, and now operates over 50 rental stations across twelve European countries, including its first U.S. rental station in Los Angeles, established in June 2022. roadsurfer opens six new rental stations in 2023, including two stations in Germany, two in Sweden, and two in Italy. Spain introduces new visa for foreign start-ups & digital nomads
The Spanish Parliament has approved the new law for start-ups and digital nomads, which regulates who is eligible for this visa and anticipates reducing the Corporation Tax for these categories from 25 to 15 per cent in the first four years of their stay in Spain. The new law enables anyone from the EU or third countries that haven’t been a resident in Spain in the last four years to benefit from a special visa which can be renewed for up to five years, as informed by a news report in Schengen Visa. In addition, the new law regulates that Corporation Tax that applies to startups and investors to be reduced from 25 to 15 per cent in the first four years, and it also allows remote workers to be able to pay the Non-Resident Tax, which refers to workers and companies who receive income in Spain but cannot stay there for more than 183 days. Digital nomads will also be eligible to benefit from the same tax rate of 15 per cent, limited only throughout the first four years of their stay. According to the new law, a new visa will allow digital nomads to stay and work in the country for up to 12 months. Once their legal stay has ended, they will be able to extend it by two years and later up to another five years by applying for residence authorization to be a remote worker in Spain. “It’s one of the most enjoyable moments I’ve experienced in the Parliament. It’s a law that will allow Spain to be at the forefront in the push and promotion of talent in this rapidly growing digital economy,” the Economic Affairs Minister, Nadia Calvino said. The law was passed by 177 members, with 75 abstentions and 88 votes against and it is expected to be ratified without much discussion in the Senate during the upcoming weeks. Most abstentions came from far-right party Vox and Catalan parties Junts and ERC while right-wing PP MPs were against the law. The new law comes after efforts of the country to become more attractive to businessmen and other entrepreneurs, as the country in 2015 was ranked among the worst countries in the OECD to start a business in. By the end of the month, it is expected for the government to determine the exact requirements and conditions for digital nomads, including the minimum amount they have to earn, although the amount is expected to be approximately €2,000 (approx. USD 2,015) per month.
