The St Regis Venice receives Green Key Certification
The St. Regis Venice recently became the proud recipient of The Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE)’s Green Key certification in recognition of its in-facility practices for sustainability. In order to merit the certification which means compliance with the highest possible standards for sustainable operations, The St. Regis Venice boosted staff involvement in sustainability efforts, supported by Marriott International’s dedicated platform offering courses on environmental issues. Since 1999, the Green Key has been considered one of the world’s foremost standards of excellence in the field of environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry. Sustainability at the heart of luxury According to St Regis Venice general manager Audrey Huttert:“Sustainability is woven into every aspect of our operations, from pioneering initiatives such as being the first hotel in Venice to install electric charging stations for the boats, to our community outreach programmes. This recognition reaffirms our commitment to offering guests an unforgettable experience while preserving the beauty of Venice for future generations." Guests are encouraged to conserve water by requesting to wash sheets and towels only when necessary, while the annual WWF’s Earth Hour initiative invites them to conserve electricity over a dinner where candles are the only light source. The property is 100 percent plastic-free and features full LED lighting and electric boat charging. At the same time, hotel restaurants favour seasonal, zero-kilometre food, as it makes a point to use 90 percent local products. To further reduce food waste, surplus food is offered at the staff canteen or donated to the Community of St. Egidio, a Catholic association that provides social services. In other social initiatives, The St. Regis Venice purchases traditional Christmas treats such as panettone and pandoro from the City of Hope Foundation, donating some to the Capuchin friars. At Easter, the hotel supports the Lega del Filo d’Oro Foundation, which assists, educates and rehabilitates deaf-blind individuals, by purchasing Easter eggs made by the members. Monitoring and leading these and other efforts is the hotel’s Green Committee, composed of department heads and a member from each operational division. The committee meets monthly to review, realign and benchmark sustainable practices, ensuring continuous improvement and adherence to environmental goals.
St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort attains Green Globe Certification
The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort recently received the prestigious Green Globe Certificate, the world's leading certification for sustainable operation and management of travel and tourism worldwide. This achievement reflects the resort's steadfast commitment to environmental conservation, responsible tourism, and sustainability, reinforcing its dedication to protecting the natural beauty of the private island and its surrounding marine ecosystem. General manager Vincent Pauchon said of the certification: “We are deeply honoured to receive the Green Globe Certification, which reflects the dedication of our team in embracing sustainability at every level of our operations, Our commitment to preserving the natural environment of this island is at the heart of everything we do. Sustainability is not just a practice; it is a promise we make to future generations, ensuring that luxury and conservation go hand in hand.” An integrated approach to sustainable operations The resort's sustainability efforts are deeply integrated into its operations. In partnership with Reefscapers, the resort plays an active role in coral reef restoration, inviting guests to participate in hands-on coral planting initiatives. The resort also employs a comprehensive waste management strategy that includes advanced recycling and composting systems. To support local communities and reduce its environmental footprint, the resort sources organic, locally grown produce and sustainable seafood. Quenched with Fen A key milestone in the resort's sustainability journey is the introduction of Fen, the resort's signature still and sparkling water, named after the Maldivian word for “water.” Sourced from the pristine sea surrounding the island, Fen is filtered and desalinized on-site through the resort's newly installed, eco-conscious bottling plant, designed to minimize carbon emissions. For every bottle sold, USD $3 is contributed to the resort's Blue Fund, which directly supports coral propagation projects with Reefscapers. Fen water is available as a complimentary offering during breakfast and at the beach. It is also featured on all restaurant and bar menus, enhancing the guest experience while actively reducing single-use plastic waste. The resort is also proud to feature local products and endorse Maldivian artisanal crafts, further enriching the cultural connection between guests and the island.
Blame it on the DJ music and art activation at the St Regis Venice explores creativity in all its forms
One of Venice’s preeminent art patrons, The St. Regis Venice has launched a series of exclusive events blending visual and performance art with electronic music. The first of the “Blame it on the DJ” activations will take place on 10 August 2023, followed by two more performances on 8 September and 10 November at the hotel’s Arts Bar – a temple of fine mixology famous for its artistic cocktails inspired by such creative greats as Monet and Banksy. On Thursday, 10 August, The Graffiti Night will kick off the series with a live performance from one of the most interesting new names in the Milanese contemporary art scene, Gioele Corradengo, also known as Sexsdreams. Gioele creates colourful and expressive artworks that combine words and images. His art is characterised by punchy lines and phrases mixed with abstract shapes and symbols, often inspired by his dreams and emotions. He uses spray paint, markers, stickers and other materials and is also involved in music and fashion, collaborating with various brands and artists. During the event, Gioele will give a live painting demonstration creating a unique graffiti on canvas, as well as lending his creative touch to decorating the DJ booth and personalising the DJ’s clothes. The second event, Yoga Performance Night featuring Venetian painter Elisabetta Zanutto and a yoga dancer, will take place on Friday, 8 September. Elisabetta works with painting, photography and digital art to create artworks that explore the themes of water, light and colour, inspired by the beauty of Venice and its canals. On the night of the event, the artist will draw inspiration from the movements of a yoga dancer performing asanas in rhythm with music. Held at the Arts Bar terrace, the performance will offer a unique opportunity for the guests to observe how the iconic landscape of peeling plaster and mysterious shadows creates a romantic atmosphere serving as an inspiration to both the dancer and the painter. Finally, on Friday, 10 November, the Portrait Night will offer a showcase for Alvise Bittente – a contemporary artist from Venice who specialises in drawing and creates artworks that are elegant, ironic and playful, often using wordplay and humour in his titles. Alvise’s signature materials and techniques are pencil, ink, watercolour, collage and digital manipulation. During the event, Alvise will draw portraits of the guests, each a study of the personality, identity and emotions of the subject, who can then take their signed portraits home as a souvenir. Each ‘Blame it on the DJ’ session will feature a guest DJ and an artist performance. The events will run from 8.30 pm until midnight and are open to the public. IATA officially launches its Sustainable Aviation Fuel Registry
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) officially launched the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Registry with its release to the Civil Aviation Decarbonization Organization (CADO). The Registry, now live under CADO management, will enable a global market for SAF that will accelerate the transition to net zero emissions by 2050. In a statement, IATA officials pointed out that the decarbonisation of the global aviation sector requires collective effort. They said: “In releasing the SAF Registry to CADO for launch, we have put in place a critical platform for the benefit of all stakeholders. It ensures that all airlines in the world have access to SAF and that their SAF purchases can be claimed against any climate-related obligations in this domain. The Registry will record the environmental attributes of SAF purchases in an immutable way, safeguarding against double counting. Airlines, their corporate customers, fuel producers, regulatory bodies, and all related organizations will be able to record and account for their SAF transactions in a global market for SAF.” Officials added that, while this is of fundamental importance and a historically momentous advance, it is but one step along the way to a mature, transparent, and liquid global SAF market. Further progress requires active policy support for the ramping-up of all renewable energy production, and for SAF within that production. According to IATA senior vice-president for sustainability and chief economist Marie Owens Thomsen: “Governments must reallocate their direct support given to fossil fuel producers in favor of renewable energy production. The precedent of the wind and solar energy markets is the example to follow, and this without any further delay.” What exactly is the SAF Registry? The SAF Registry is a global system to record SAF transactions in a standardized and transparent way. It ensures that the environmental benefits of SAF can be tracked as they move across the SAF value chain and enable the claiming of these against regulatory obligations and voluntary schemes by airlines and corporate customers. The Registry helps solve the challenge of limited SAF supply which is acutely scarce and available in only a few locations globally by connecting airlines with SAF producers and suppliers, regardless of their geographical location. In addition, it gives airlines’ corporate customers access to in-sector emissions reductions and capitalizes on firms’ capacity to co-finance the cost of decarbonisation. The SAF Registry is technology and feedstock neutral, favouring the emergence of diverse SAF production streams across the world. It will be able to accommodate specific regulations, while favoring global harmonisation. Moreover, interoperability with other registries is an important feature of the Registry, supporting competition and open markets. The Registry was developed in consultation with airlines, government authorities, OEMs, fuel producers and suppliers, and corporate travel management companies. With over 30 early users already in the process of onboarding and ready to use the system, the Registry is underpinned by the IATA SAF Accounting and Reporting Methodology which provides a consistent approach to accounting for the environmental benefits of SAF purchases, regardless of location.
