Six Senses shares 82 tried-and-tested solutions for reducing plastics in the hospitality sector

Six Senses gave a recent update on its Journey to Plastic Freedom initiative, announcing that it will be sharing the operational intelligence it has gleaned with the global hospitality sector. The hospitality brand initially shared its Journey to Plastic Freedom Playbook with  6,400 IHG hotels across the world.  Now that it is being offered to the wider industry, Six Senses scheduled a webinar on Wednesday, 6th November on sustainability via the playbook. This webinar is open to all hospitality professionals who wish to learn more about plastic reduction in their operations. Likewise, from that date onward, the playbook will be available to download online.  Six Senses chief executive Neil Jacobs remarked in a statement:  “Sustainability is a defining characteristic of what luxury means to us. We are sharing our  playbook with other hotel groups because the issue needs collective action if we are to make a real impact on our environment. If that  means sharing our trade secrets with the wider industry, then so be it. What we know from our years of experience is that  sustainability doesn't have to be to the detriment of guest experience. This playbook only tells half the story. The real legacy will be how  our journey is embedded within further afield and who knows, potentially become part of life for all hotel operations.”  82 proven solutions Compiled into the playbook, the Journey’s findings translate into 82 tried and tested solutions for dealing with plastic items in the four main areas of a hotel’s operations: housekeeping, back of house, food and beverage, and spa.  Items being eliminated range from bags and toothpaste tubes, to coffee capsules and brooms. The playbook also shares ten lessons about how being  environmentally and socially responsible can be successfully married to uncompromising hospitality, efficient  operations, profitability, an outstanding guest experience and high levels of satisfaction and engagement among  colleagues.  Following a successful plastic-free pilot at Six Senses Laamu in 2016, the brand commissioned a group-wide inventory  of every plastic item within its operations. To its surprise, even though it was eliminating tens of thousands of items, the numbers kept going up.   According to Six Senses’ vice-president of sustainability Jeff Smith, this was due to the way staff members were becoming more aware and able to identify the plastics around them.  Smith said: “There’s no way to sugarcoat it. Eliminating plastic items can  be difficult, but it is rewarding. We launched an education and awareness campaign which comprised six training modules. It  opened the company’s eyes to the plastic it hadn’t ‘seen’ before. No item was too large or small to be nominated for eliminating. That  said, it’s one thing to identify items for eliminating and research better alternatives but quite another to get hosts to do without a  material that made their life easier and more efficient. We now have 82 solutions for plastic items which we know are viable  alternatives. Every single time a plastic item is avoided in a Six Senses hotel is yet another good news story.” A cooperative effort Six Senses’s Journey to Plastic Freedom Playbook was written and edited by its in-house sustainability leaders in partnership with industry stalwarts including Rachel McCaffery, CEO of the sustainable tourism consultancy  Green Case; Ally Dragozet, CEO of the marine consultancy Sea Going Green; Phil Bloomfield, founder of  communications agency Ready to Bloom; and Jo Hendrickx, founder of Travel Without Plastic.   McCaffery explained: “It can be overwhelming to face up to how much material you use, and the cost of plastic alternatives can add up. But when compared to the cost that long term plastic is extracting from wildlife and our own health, is it a change you really can’t afford to make? What was most encouraging was the engagement from Six Senses guests and hosts. Some solutions  were initially viewed with suspicion but have quickly become guest favourites, such as our toothpaste tablets.”

Six Senses Porto Heli: Gateway to Wellness and Adventure on the Greek Peloponnesian Riviera

Six Senses Porto Heli will bring the brand’s trademark wellness and sustainability ethos to the elegant Ermioni in the beautiful Greek Peloponnese, with the famous islands of Spetses and Hydra within view. The beauty spot is surrounded by protected coves and bays enjoying the clear waters of the Aegean and is known for its yacht-filled marinas, palatial summer villas, sun-kissed Mediterranean landscape, fine dining, and boutique stores. Historically, the Peloponnese has been the main field of action for Greece since prehistoric times, hosting important archaeological sites, including Olympia, Epidaurus, and Mycenae. Located 200 kilometers from Athens, Porto Heli has evolved from a sleepy fishing village into a destination for glamor and outdoor adventure. Set to open in 2026, the LEED-certified Six Senses Porto Heli will offer around 60 rooms and suites, most with private plunge pools and private terraces or gardens, along with a three-bedroom retreat villa. In addition, there will be 10 branded residential villas for sale, offering five to eight bedrooms. Woven into the topography of the site so that the buildings and land become one, the hotel will rise from the shore to maximize the sea views, from the large infinity pool and spa on the lower level to the rooms split across two levels and up to the lobby and reception enjoying a panoramic view. The residential villas flank the hotel and back onto a natural park to ensure privacy and seclusion. This cascade effect, conceived by Rome-based firm Delogu Architecture and Arch Group from Athens, reflects the relationship with nature, with buildings bridging the forest and the sea. Indoor spaces lead seamlessly to the outdoors and a resort lifestyle where guests can disconnect from the everyday and reconnect with loved ones. Design elements are contemporary and natural, from the stone walls to limestone flooring, wooden structures, and bronze finishes. The local surroundings also inspire the color palette and interior design by MuzaLab London, emphasizing light and shadow play. The landscape of pine, cypress, olive trees, and lavender attracts abundant birdlife. Along with eight treatment rooms, thermal wet areas and heat experiences, and an indoor swimming pool with ocean views, the 1,600 square-meter Six Senses Spa will house a Biohacking Lounge, boutique and concept store, outdoor fitness and wellness circuit, and spa herbal gardens. The all-day main restaurant will sit directly on the beach, joined by a sunset bar with panoramic views, traditional Greek Kafeneio, a variety of private outdoor event spaces, and an organic vegetable garden. Other facilities will include an Alchemy Bar, Earth Lab, outdoor pool and sports facilities, sound healing dome, and Grow With Six Senses play area and activities for children. Down by the beach, there will be a boat jetty and beach club hosting a range of water sports, beach dining, and juice and coffee bars. Commenting on the brand’s second Greek property to be announced in recent months, Six Senses CEO Neil Jacobs said: “Six Senses Porto Heli will create a haven of wellness and emotional hospitality along the captivating shores of Ermioni, with panoramic vistas of Spetses and Hydra. We’re hoping to add an exciting new chapter to the Peloponnesian heritage and legacy. As we embark on this journey, we are committed to nurturing the essence of the region while introducing new ideas in holistic rejuvenation.” Six Senses has partnered with a joint venture between London-based real asset merchant bank CBE Capital, Golden Land Goutos, New York-based Taconic Capital Advisors, and London-based Cedar Capital Partners. Geza Toth-Feher, Managing Partner of CBE Capital, stated: “CBE Capital is thrilled to have brought together the best-in-class owners, investors, and operator to develop this new Six Senses hotel and branded residences in Porto Heli on the Greek mainland. In line with our investment strategy, this wonderful property will bring a new type of luxury experience to Porto Heli.” Aris Goutos added: “Over the last four decades, all of us at Golden Land Goutos have worked to build up the recognition of Porto Heli as an international hotspot for luxury hotels, residences, and magnificent holiday homes. The region’s unique beauty has attracted European Royals and Greek shipping magnates alike. We look forward to bringing the Six Senses ethos to Porto Heli and are excited to introduce these spectacular private villas with their authentic hospitality and timeless appeal.”

Six Senses reopens in Cambodia and Bhutan with a renewed focus on elevated experiences

The silver lining to the pandemic has been the opportunity to rethink and reset tourism. As a priority sector in both Cambodia and Bhutan, both nations are moving away from mass tours and consumerism into rare, authentic, and meaningful experiences. By capturing the growing global trend in this direction, they aim to boost economic and environmental benefits and improve livelihoods. Six Senses Bhutan  In Bhutan, high-value, low-volume tourism enables investment in transformative programs that preserve Bhutan’s cultural traditions, protect its heritage and environment, upgrade infrastructure, create opportunities for its young people, and build resilience. This model, which includes a Sustainable Development Fee, also protects the Kingdom’s natural resources, with 70% of the land remaining under forest cover. Bhutan’s appeal is as much about its people as it is about its beauty, which is another important part of the guest experience. Visitors make deep connections with their guides, hosts, and local communities and want to come back. Located in the Kingdom’s western and central valleys, each of the five Six Senses lodges has a unique character and interpretation of Bhutan’s spirituality, heritage, and hospitality. Six Senses Thimphu is perched on an auspicious hillside overlooking the shimmering lights of Thimphu. The “Flying Farmhouse Amidst the Rice Fields” Six Senses Punakha is a stone’s throw from the majestic Punakha Dzong. Six Senses Paro is set among stone ruins and is designed to maximize what is undoubtedly one of the most scenic settings within the Six Senses Bhutan journey. Six Senses Gangtey is in a quaint and charming area in central Bhutan, well-known as the winter residence of the black-necked cranes. Built as a forest within a forest, Six Senses Bumthang is an auspicious base to discover monuments, monasteries, and winter festivals. Guests can visit one or any combination as part of innovative itineraries or “Khamsas”, accompanied by a private Guest Experience Maker guide and driver throughout the journey. To mark the Reopening Celebration, guests booking by October 31, 2022, will enjoy one additional complimentary night with any six-night paid stay and two extra nights with a nine-night paid stay. Landing at Paro International Airport, the 10-Night Khamsa journey offers a mix of some of Bhutan’s not-to-be-missed sites, visiting some lesser-known places along the way. “We have a real opportunity to showcase the more hidden side of Bhutan,” says General Manager Andrew Whiffen. “From weaving through glacial valleys, rice fields, and remote mountain villages to joining Thimphu residents for circumambulations at the Memorial Chorten, trekking up to the Tiger’s Nest monastery, which dangles off a cliffside, or joining young monks for breakfast or a game of football, guests are blown away. We combine these experiences with returning to the lodge to take a dip in the pool, sample local culinary delicacies, and visit Six Senses Spa for a pampering treatment.” Six Senses Krabey Island, Cambodia  Post-pandemic recovery in Cambodia will rely in part on a business-enabling environment for higher-value travel and tourism. Beyond the Angkor complex and Siem Reap, Cambodia is also endowed with beautiful coastlines, important conservation areas, and a significant number of heritage and cultural sites, many of which are easily accessible from Six Senses Krabey Island. With the mainland reception just a 10-minute drive from Sihanouk International Airport, it is then a short 15-minute water transfer to the resort to enjoy cultural, wellness, sporting, and signature dining experiences. The resort will reopen on December 2 with a renewed focus on community-based experiences to interact with locals, nature, and wildlife. Guests booking the Festive Getaway by November 30 will save 20% on the Best Flexible Rate. The 40 spacious pool villas offer a private island hideaway feel without forgoing guestroom amenities, guest services, and a spa, which crowns the island and offers a wide range of holistic rejuvenation therapies. Days are as hands-on as guests like. A visit to the organic garden on the mainland includes a pick-your-own lunch. The Hook, Line, and Catch experience starts with an ethical fishing line in hand. A Spice Trail trip to the Kampot meanders past paddy fields and houses on stilts to an authentic pepper-infused lunch at La Plantation. Time-honoured tips can be acquired during a Khmer Cooking Class. There is a range of villas, from the Hideaway (perfect for two) to the Ocean (elevated for the views). Groups of friends or families can stay together in the Oceanfront duplex, which sleeps six and extends over two floors to maximize privacy. Set on the west side of the island, The Beach Retreat sleeps five and, as its name suggests, not only offers a private sundeck for lounging and alfresco dining but also direct access to a private beach cove. The toughest part about this one is leaving it. “From December to February, the slightly cooler temperatures, low humidity, and long periods of sunshine make it an ideal time to visit,” says General Manager Ateeb Shrestha. “During the dry season, you can enjoy morning yoga on the rooftop pavilion or take a spin around the island jungle gym, visit temples, go on a hike or tour, or simply relax and sunbathe during the day and enjoy our boardwalk dining or movie nights under the stars at night. The Experiences Center offers a wide range of on-island and on-water activities within the resort, plus boat excursions to the surrounding islands. Teens will love the Double-Dip Hangout, which is adjacent to the horizon-edge pool and serves house-made gelatos, and children aged 4 to 12 are kept busy at the kids’ club.”

Six Senses Ninh Van Bay switches on the sun

Six Senses Ninh Van Bay is thrilled to introduce Ninh Van Greens, the first in-resort solar farm in Vietnam, named after the resort's unique location and the idea of harnessing solar to power the resort while growing crops for the restaurants and spa. The Ninh Van Greens solar complex has the resources to produce electricity, organic vegetables and fruits, and hot water. Make hay while the sun shines One of the significant highlights of Ninh Van Greens is that the solar farm houses a 17,222 square-foot (1,600 square-meter) organic garden called Solar FreshCuts. Due to the ingenious placement of the solar panels, the land beneath them can be used to grow organic food crops while energy is being produced. The 800 individual solar panels are arranged in rows, tilted along a hill, and elevated above the ground by eight feet (2.5 meters). The installation allows the right amounts of light and shade to filter through to provide sufficient photosynthesis for vegetation to grow and therefore enable simultaneous power generation and agricultural production. As of August 2022, Ninh Van Greens generated more than 229.127 kWh of electricity and supplied 17 percent of the resort’s energy supply. As a result of the secondary agriculture use, a total of 31 crops have been grown, providing 1,278 pounds (580 kilograms) of vegetables to feed guests and hosts. Ninh Van Greens will also house 15 different varieties of fruit trees, including bananas, jackfruits, mangos, and pomegranates, covering 21,527 square feet (2,000 square meters) of the hill and producing 200 pounds (90 kilograms) of leaves and fruits for food displays. Visit the Alchemy Bar for a sensory experience Solar FreshCuts helps the Alchemy Bar shine brighter too. With views to the bay, the Alchemy Bar uses organic ingredients picked from the solar garden to create homemade spa and beauty products. The healing properties of a variety of herbs, fruits, and spices are explained by skilled therapists in interactive and eco-friendly workshops welcoming groups of up to 15 guests. Together they can develop personal and very individual blends for body scrubs, natural hair shampoo, or hand sanitiser. Eat With Six Senses: A complete journey from farm to table Following the Eat With Six Senses philosophy; food is not merely nourishment but an experiential adventure. Guests are invited to reserve a table and discover how Six Senses Ninh Van Bay delivers a plant-based fine dining experience right next to the solar farm. The Farmhouse destination dining space enjoys breathtaking scenery in front of Alchemy Bar and can host 20 guests at a time. It brings natural ingredients, local and sustainable farming, and 'less-is-more' cooking practices to the table to show the whole journey of a plant from the seeding stage to when it is presented on a dish for diners. “It is always deeply satisfying and rewarding when picking your own vegetables,” said General Manager Benjamin Kreuz. “We invite guests to reconnect with nature and our planet with a walking tour of the eco-friendly farm led by the culinary team. They can learn about nutrients and the methods used to raise vegetables and fruits, then enjoy a mouth-watering ‘farm-to-table’ meal at The Farmhouse. Fresh ingredients are directly harvested at the Solar FreshCuts garden. To get the most out of every vegetable, the culinary team prepares food from each one of their stalks, leaves, stems, and skins. Serving one-of-a-kind combinations of these ingredients provide unique textures and flavours to each dish.”

As the brand’s first hotel to open in Italy, it will offer a green oasis amid the hustle and bustle of Via del Corso. Enjoying a prime position within the UNESCO world heritage site of Rome’s historic center, it is just a few steps away from iconic landmarks such as the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain. Six Senses Rome is now accepting reservations for stays in early 2023. When all the final touches are in place, Six Senses Rome will take guests on a journey into heritage, discovery, and community as the Eternal City strengthens its presence on the global tourism map with major international events in the pipeline.  “I am honored and proud that this milestone is happening in my home city,” says Francesca Tozzi, general manager of Six Senses Rome. “My team and I are working with enthusiasm to translate the brand’s core values of emotional hospitality, sustainability, and wellness into a Roman context. For us, high quality and luxury include out-of-the-ordinary experiences and respect for the local community, while keeping things fun and quirky!”. A Palazzo where history blends with modernity Palazzo Salviati Cesi Mellini, which Six Senses Rome calls its home, is a historical building dating back as far as the 15th century. It underwent further developments over the following centuries and is named after the prominent families who once lived within its walls. Six Senses Rome has restored the original façade and monumental staircase to their grand origins to preserve the Palazzo’s priceless heritage. The façade of the neighboring church San Marcello al Corso, a fine example of Italian Baroque, has also undergone major renovation works, representing Six Senses Rome’s first sustainability project and commitment to the local community. Interiors are contemporary in style with sustainable architecture and design accents, featuring imaginative planting, natural light, and breezy open spaces. The concept is the vision of architect Patricia Urquiola, globally renowned for her responsible design development and connecting people emotionally to the spaces around them. Featuring traditional Cocciopesto plasterwork and locally sourced Travertine limestones, the 96 guest rooms and suites are refined and cozy, with patterns and graphic elements throughout, staying true to the brand’s love of authenticity. With its airy rooms, sun-filled terraces, notably high ceilings, and historic bay windows, the focus is on well-being and a sense of conviviality. A food haven the Italian way BIVIUM Restaurant-Café-Bar on the ground floor offers a respite for guests and locals, serving modern Italian cuisine with a Roman nod and plenty of plant-based options. The buzzy lifestyle space features an open kitchen, dedicated deli corners, a Josper grill, and a wood-fired oven. It opens out to an elegant terrace, ideal for networking, reading, thinking, or creating. Majestically curated by Executive Chef Nadia Frisina, locally sourced and seasonal ingredients at their peak flavor are the stars of the menu, which showcases best-in-class regional produce. NOTOS Rooftop specialises in tempting bites and creative sips, surrounded by unparalleled 360-degree panoramic views. The abundance of terracotta pots and aromatic plants offer a secret garden escape unlike anywhere in Rome, whether for sunrise yoga or sunset aperitivo. The art of Roman bathing Six Senses Spa brings its trademark wellness formula to life while respecting centuries past. It connects international travelers with the local community through the tradition of ancient Roman bathing. The three plunge pools reproduce the calidarium, tepidarium, and frigidarium, reducing inflammation through heat and aiding muscle recovery through a 60-minute journey. A bas-relief inspired by the myth of Daphne and Apollo embellishes the walls, adding pathos and recreating a bygone Roman feel. Beyond the baths, there’s a Hammam, biohacking and meditation rooms, sauna, outdoor yoga deck, fitness center, and five treatment rooms (one for couples). There’s also the opportunity to learn about the therapeutic power of herbs and plants, guided by a skilled therapist, at the Alchemy Bar. Roma Caput Mundi for cultural experiences Six Senses Rome is also gearing up to take guests behind the walls of some of the most significant Roman cultural institutions, including the Palazzo Colonna and selected galleries such as the Borghese, and Doria Pamphilj. From the magic of holding the brush with “Catching the Light” painting classes to exploring the secrets of a Restoration Studio with “Layers of Life” experiences and wandering hidden water channels underneath the Trevi Fountain, Six Senses Rome is rich with ideas for hands-on and multi-sensory art, archaeology, fashion, and gastronomy wonders.
