Marriott International to acquire citizenM

Marriott International announced it has reached an agreement to acquire the lifestyle brand citizenM on Monday, 28th April. citizenM is a company that specialises in unique and innovative offerings in the select-service segment.  The impending acquisition is seen to be a great boost to the ongoing global expansion of Marriott's select-service and lifestyle lodging offerings. It is likewise seen as timely, given that Marriott continues to focus on expanding its portfolio to provide even more exciting options for guests and Marriott Bonvoy members around the world. Marriott International president and chief executive Anthony Capuano said of the matter: "As we continue to drive best-in-class experiences for travelers, today's announcement builds upon Marriott's commitment to enhance options for guests and Marriott Bonvoy members. We are thrilled to add citizenM as a unique, differentiated offering to our select-service brand portfolio as we continue to strengthen Marriott's foothold in this valuable market segment around the world. Marriott has a proven track record of growing acquired brands significantly by leveraging our global development ecosystem, the benefits of our industry-leading affiliation cost structure, and the power of our award-winning Marriott Bonvoy loyalty platform." citizenM founder and chair Rattan Chadha said: "We are very excited about our agreement with Marriott and look forward to this pivotal next step for our future growth. I envisage this relationship will greatly enhance citizenM's global reach and brand impact. At closing of the transaction, Marriott will pay $355 million to acquire the brand and related intellectual property.  Following closing, the citizenM portfolio will become part of Marriott's system, with the hotels owned and leased by the seller subject to new long-term franchise agreements with Marriott.  Stabilised fees for the open and under construction pipeline portfolio are anticipated to be approximately $30 million annually.  The seller may also receive earn-out payments up to $110 million that are based on the future growth of the brand over a specified, multi-year timeframe.  These payments would not begin until the fourth year following closing. Also,  closing of the transaction is subject to various customary conditions, including US regulatory approval. Assuming closing of the transaction in 2025, Marriott now expects full year 2025 net rooms growth to approach 5 percent. Morgan Stanley & Co International plc and Eastdil Secured acted as financial advisors to the seller in this transaction. A brand known for service and smart tech The citizenM brand is known for its genuine service, tech-savvy in-hotel experience, highly efficient use of space, and focus on art and design.  Founded in 2008, this hospitality firm caters to a growing demographic of value-conscious travelers looking for technology-driven accommodations with features like smart in-room design, indoor and outdoor common spaces featuring immersive artwork and local artifacts, comfortably appointed living rooms that serve as collaborative workspaces, creative meeting rooms, grab-and-go food and beverage options, and lively rooftop decks. The citizenM global portfolio currently consists of 36 open hotels, comprising 8,544 rooms, across more than 20 cities spanning the United States, Europe, and the Asia Pacific, including gateway cities like New York, London, Paris, and Rome.  The brand's current pipeline includes three under-construction hotels totaling over 600 rooms that are anticipated to open by mid-2026, with the prospect of significant additional growth across Marriott's global regions over the next decade.

Mohit Bhowar takes executive sous-chef post at JW Marriott Mumbai Sabar

JW Marriott Mumbai Sahar officially welcomed Mohit Bhowar as its new executive sous-chef. A dynamic kitchen management professional with over 17 years of rich experience, Bhowar brings a deep-rooted passion for the culinary arts into the role, along with a commitment to excellence that aligns seamlessly with the brand's pursuit of elevated guest experiences.  In his new role, he will be responsible for leading the culinary brigade at JW Marriott Mumbai Sahar, infusing them with his signature creativity, strategic insight, and guest-first philosophy.  Bhowar will work closely with the culinary team to enhance the hotel’s diverse Food & Beverage experiences, ensuring the highest standards across all dining venues and events.  His illustrious career includes stints with a number of prestigious hospitality brands including Marsa Malaz Kempinski, Renaissance Hotels, Sofitel, Courtyard by Marriott, Hilton, and Marriott Executive Apartments. Armed with a Bachelor’s degree in Culinary Arts from IHM Aurangabad, Bhowar’s approach blends strong academic grounding with hands-on expertise in kitchen management, quality assurance, and cost optimization.  Raising the bar in his profession Over the years, Bhowar has been celebrated for driving impactful initiatives, from elevating hygiene standards to training the next generation of culinary professionals.  His contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including ‘Most Improved Food Quality’ award at Courtyard by Marriott Bilaspur in 2017 and ‘Best Manager of the Year’ at Fairfield by Marriott Goa Anjuna in 2019.  He also represented Indian cuisine internationally, at the Renaissance Kota Bharu Hotel in Malaysia, and has been featured on platforms such as TV9 and Radio Mirchi. Prior to joining JW Marriott Mumbai Sahar, Bhowar held the position of head chef at Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl, Doha.  He also played a pivotal role in several successful pre-opening projects as Executive Chef, including Marriott Executive Apartments in Navi Mumbai and Fairfield by Marriott in Goa (Anjuna and Calangute), as well as Hilton Garden Inn Lucknow.  His tenure was marked by a strategic approach to quality control, operational efficiency, and exceptional service delivery.

China gets ready for May Day travel period

China is battering down the hatches in anticipation of the eight-day travel rush for the May Day holiday. The rush is expected to run between 29th April and 6th May, and authorities expect passenger flows to peak on Labour Day, 1st May. In a statement released on Tuesday, 15th April, the China State Railway Group Co, Ltd (China Railway) announced that tickets for rail travel for the holidays are now available and that railways throughout the country will be operating under a peak schedule throughout the holiday. China Railway expects to operate at least 12,000 trains a day and hopes to meet the upsurge in demand by adding more passenger trains, operating overnight high-speed trains, and attaching additional carriages to previously scheduled trains. Authorities pointed out that the upcoming holiday will see strong travel demand for family visits, tourism, and spring outings. The lure of overseas travel Interestingly, many Chinese are opting for both short- and medium-haul trips overseas, contributing to the surging demand for more diverse travel experiences. According to a Tuniu Travel report released on Monday, 14th April, group tour bookings are up by 60 percent this year, along with a 29 percent increase in independent travel among tourists from both the mainland, as well as special autonomous regions Hong Kong and Macao. Authorities have noted over 750,000 outbound and inbound flight bookings for the May Day holidays, with reservations for Japan and South Korea up by 28 percent year-on-year. While considerably fewer, there are still those who opt for longer journeys to Europe, particularly to Greece, Italy and Norway.
