Phu Quoc gears up for the 2027 APEC Summit
Marking its third time to do so, the Vietnamese government has selected the island city of Phu Quoc to host the 2027 APEC Summit. Kien Giang Province has launched and expedited investments in transportation infrastructure, including Phu Quoc Airport, An Thoi International Port and the APEC Multifunctional Complex, to welcome this hugely significant occasion. The hosting venue will accommodate high-level leaders from 21 member economies, along with thousands of delegates, international journalists and top global business executives. Boosting infrastructure In preparation for the event, the city will also construct a 4E-class airport, including extensive upgrades to passenger and cargo terminals, VIP lounges, aircraft parking areas and runway enhancements. Phu Quoc International Airport will expand to 1,073 hectares, extending the existing runway to 3.5km, constructing a second 3.3km-long runway and developing a new T2 international terminal, with a capacity of up to 20 million passengers, along with a VIP terminal, an apron for up to 70 positions, hangars and cargo warehouses. Beyond air travel, upgrades will also be made to the An Thoi International Port which will be expanded to a 100-hectare scale, capable of accommodating the world's largest cruise ships, such as the Icon of the Seas, which carries between 7,000 and 10,000 passengers. For road transportation between Phu Quoc International Airport and the APEC Summit Convention Centre, the city will expand Provincial Road 975 and develop a new urban rail line. The APEC Avenue project will serve as a key horizontal axis connecting provincial highways (existing boulevards) to the APEC Multifunctional Complex, with a road width of 68m and a length of about 3 km. To support the city's overall development, additional infrastructure projects will include investments in reservoirs, water treatment plants, the renovation of Duong Dong River and the construction of wastewater treatment and waste management facilities. Vietnam’s ultimate MICE venue The APEC multifunctional complex will accommodate nearly 15,000 people, including a 10,000 square metre conference and exhibition centre, with a seating capacity of 3,000 to 3,500, a multifunctional auditorium, APEC Square, and an international press centre capable of accommodating 3,000 to 4,000 journalists. A high-rise mixed-use area will feature hotels, a duty-free shopping centre, and a multifunctional cultural and arts hub, with 3,000 to 3,500 seats, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for hosting performances and shows produced by leading global entertainment companies. Within the centre, there will also be a dining area capable of serving 3,000 to 4,000 guests. Along with current attractions within the vicinity, the APEC Multifunctional Complex will become a new beacon for visitors and create long-term value for the local tourism industry.

Eschuri Vung Bau Golf offers forest-to-sea golfing in Phu Quoc
The 18-hole Eschuri Vung Bau Golf course on the island of Phu Quoc has become one of Vietnam’s most popular sporting attractions. Located next to the stunning Vung Bau Beach, one of the prime spots in Phu Quoc Island, and boasting of a dreamy sunset view, it is not surprising that it has become a destination of choice for avid golfers from within and beyond the region. Designed and built in collaboration with Sun Group and IMG, the world's leading golf course design and management company, Eschuri Vung Bau Golf blends the cultural essence of Vietnam with the paradise-like beauty of Pearl Island, stretching a total area of 7,508 yards long and over 65 hectares wide. Eschuri Vung Bau Golf is considered one of the golf courses in Vietnam that is placed in an ideal location, offering a unique forest-to-sea golfing experience across 18 holes that lead from dense old-growth forests to the beachfront. Adventure by design The first nine holes on the course are designed to capture the wild beauty of Phu Quoc's primaeval old-growth forests, where all of the ancient trees surrounding the holes are preserved. The golf greens are subtly undulating but are highly unpredictable. Without guidance from experienced caddies, Eschuri Vung Bau's local guides, players might find themselves caught in unseen traps. Leaving the jungle behind, Eschuri Vung Bau Golf takes golfers on a journey from hole 10 to hole 18. Here, players encounter the pristine white sands and picturesque waves of Pearl Island. There is less in the way of ancient trees as the fairways and greens widen and stretch out, giving the feeling of strolling along an untouched beach. These last nine holes feature more undulating greens, presenting a challenge akin to surfing the waves of Pearl Island: difficult yet exhilarating. A venue for mastery In addition to its challenges, Eschuri Vung Bau Golf offers opportunities for players to master their skills. Hole 14 offers a direct view of the sea, making players feel as though they are hitting the ball towards the horizon while enjoying the fresh air of Phu Quoc Island. Those lucky enough to play in the late afternoon will witness a breathtaking sunset over the sea.
Visa-free policy and fresh attractions drive Phu Quoc’s rise as a MICE destination
Phu Quoc in Vietnam has steadily risen over the past several years as a MICE destination with great potential thanks to two key factors. A special visa policy wherein foreign nationals and Vietnamese naturalised to foreign citizenship may enter and exit the region sans visa for 30 days is one contributory factor. MICE groups, in particular, benefit greatly from this. At the same time, Phu Quoc’s growing number of leisure experiences and tourism-related infrastructure which includes expansive, well-equipped conference and festival venues has also been a boon to the MICE travel sector. What have been the benefits from these factors? The special visa-free policy has enabled numerous international flights to operate in Phu Quoc. Indeed, the area has frequent services from Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mongolia, South Korea, Thailand, and Uzbekistan. Likewise, Phu Quoc has attracted many international hospitality groups, including the likes of Accor, Marriott International, as well as the Minor Hotels Group. Given how these hospitality groups have equipped their hotels and resorts in Phu Quoc with large conference rooms and halls, each one enables organisers to do a wide range of events from conferences to festivals. A sporting destination At the same time, Phu Quoc is also developing a reputation as a sports tourism destination thanks to professionally-designed golf courses that give conference participants an opportunity for R&R, as well as the ability to casually establish networks with their peers. Among Phu Quoc’s golf attractions are the sylvan-themed Eschuri Vung Bau which takes players on a 'forest to sea' journey across 18 challenging holes; as well as Kem Beach Driving Range for those just stepping into the sport. The range features 18 lanes stretching 300 yards, equipped with an Auto Tee system, providing a comfortable and complete training experience. Another must-do experience for any visitor to Phu Quoc is the journey on the world's longest non-stop three-cable car to Hon Thom Island. This experience has been hailed as one of the most worthwhile in Phu Quoc by Lonely Planet, the world-renowned travel guide.

Vietnam’s Phu Quoc claims #2 spot among World’s Best Islands 2024
Vietnam’s Phu Quoc came in at second place in Travel+Leisure’s World’s Best Islands list, scoring 94.41 out of 100, just short of one point behind the Maldives. Phu Quoc also surpassed perennial favourite Bali, Indonesia which scored 93.26 to claim third place. Even before Phu Quoc’s ranking was announced, experts already forecast that the Vietnamese destination stands to welcome 14.6 million visitors by the end of this year. This essentially cements its position in the region as one of its leading island attractions. A tranquil destination Phu Quoc’s appeal lies in the way it has remained virtually unchanged at a time when most Southeast Asian islands are barrelling headlong into modernity, commercialisation, and industrialisation. Island authorities work to keep its natural beauty unspoilt, making it a desirable destination for travellers from Europe, South Korea, and other parts of the world. Considering its tropical location, Phu Quoc’s climate is characterised as mild with warm sunshine all year round. The area is made up of 28 large and small islands, deep waters, rolling mountain ranges, and around 150km of pristine coastline. The area’s beaches, particularly Bai Kem and Bai Sao, have been recognised for their beauty which seems to shift with the passing of the seasons. More than just a paradise But Phu Quoc’s appeal does not just lie in its natural wonders, but also in some of the best island amenities in the world. One of its hotels, the Sun Group’s New World Phu Quoc, made it into the most recent edition of the world’s top 100 hotels. The New World is just one of two Vietnamese establishments to be included in the selection. Likewise, Phu Quoc’s Pearl Island features an impressive range of entertainment options which include the Sunset Town entertainment complex which offers various experiences to suit the different tastes of local and foreign guests.
