Sofitel opens luxury hotel and convention centre in Riyadh

Sofitel, the luxury hospitality brand from Accor, has officially opened its first hotel in Riyadh, marking a significant milestone in the brand's expansion into Saudi Arabia. Located in the prestigious Ar Rahmaniyyah neighbourhood, the Sofitel Riyadh Hotel and Convention Centre features 388 luxury rooms and the largest convention centre within a luxury hotel in Riyadh, spanning nearly 8,500 square metres. This development aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, aiming to enhance the Kingdom's global connectivity and cultural offerings. The hotel is strategically positioned just 35 minutes from King Khalid International Airport and is near key landmarks such as the Kingdom Centre Tower and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Diriyah. The architecture of the building draws inspiration from the desert dunes and the first Arabic letter of King Abdullah's name, symbolising a blend of French elegance and local heritage. Sofitel Riyadh offers a range of culinary experiences, including the Lebanese-inspired Thu-rya and the French Mediterranean brasserie Toi et Moi. The hotel also features the Princess Nouf International Convention Centre, capable of hosting up to 4,000 guests, making it a prime location for international conferences and events. The Sofitel Spa, in partnership with Clarins, will soon provide a sanctuary of wellness, offering a variety of treatments and facilities. Journey expands into Spain with luxury hotel platform

Journey, a leader in hotel experience retailing, has launched its Hospitality Performance Platform in Spain, targeting luxury hotels to enhance guest experience monetisation. This expansion is part of Journey's international growth strategy, addressing the rising cost pressures faced by luxury hotels and the need for innovative revenue streams beyond room rates. The platform, already utilised by over 750 luxury hotels globally, including Nikki Beach and Corinthia, allows hotels to sell rooms and experiences through a unified system, reportedly increasing booking value by an average of 60%. Journey's entry into Spain builds on its success in the UK and Ireland, where it has helped hotels transition from passive selling to active retailing of the entire guest experience. Leading the Spanish expansion are José Antonio Núñez and Laura Piamba, both bringing extensive experience in hospitality technology and revenue growth. Núñez, Head of International Business Development, emphasised the platform's ability to help Spanish hotels grow revenue without solely relying on room rates. Piamba, Business Development Manager, highlighted her role in driving ancillary revenue growth in the region. Journey will introduce its platform at a hospitality event co-hosted with Oracle and Bring IT at FITUR in Madrid on 21 January 2025. CEO Simon Bullingham stated, “Launching in Spain marks an important step in Journey’s growth. We help hotels sell the whole guest experience, not just the room, by bringing experience management, marketing, bookings, and payments together.” This strategic move positions Journey to capitalise on Spain's vibrant luxury market, offering hotels a comprehensive tool to enhance guest satisfaction and increase on-property spending. ```

Small Luxury Hotels of the World introduces its Wellbeing Collection

Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) formally introduces its Wellbeing Collection, an expertly considered selection of just 15 luxury hotels across the globe. These hotels go beyond the spa to provide soulful sanctuaries designed to restore the body, mind and spirit.  As SLH chief operating officer Richard Hyde puts it: “Following an increased desire from guests for wellbeing and inner sustainability, we've created the Wellbeing Collection by carefully filtering the hotels in our portfolio to spotlight those that offer heartfelt hospitality somewhere peaceful, where they can immerse themselves in nature-based experiences, the local culture, educational workshops and wellness-focused facilities, to feel enriched, unplug for their daily lives and truly relax.” That said, the Wellbeing Collection celebrates hotels where wellness is not just a service or trend, but wellbeing is a way of life.  These are destinations of depth, where environment, design, service, and philosophy work in harmony to enable guests to pause, reconnect with what matters, and leave feeling inspired to live more resilient, balanced lives. Why introduce the collection now? In today's overstimulated, always-on world, meaningful rest has become both a luxury and a necessity, with travel emerging as one of the most powerful tools to support holistic recovery.  To understand on a more granular level what is driving this need for profound rest, SLH commissioned OnePoll to conduct The Restless Traveller Report, a quantitative survey of 6,000 adults across the UK, US and Australia. Key results show that 72 percent of respondents reported feeling tired right now, with 60 percent saying modern life does not allow for true rest.  Yet, 89 percent reported that they recognise travel as effective for achieving holistic rest, seeing how it supports emotional, physical and mental wellbeing.  Furthermore, 49 percent reported nature-based travel allows for the most rest, followed by wellness-focused trips.  The SLH Wellbeing Collection has therefore been created with intention and care to meet this need for meaningful, comprehensive, and genuinely restorative travel experiences.   It goes without saying that SLH's Wellbeing Collection answers the modern traveller's need for more than just a spa, but an experience providing deep restoration, conscious connection, and lasting impact. Beyond the basics Each hotel in SLH's Wellbeing Collection goes beyond simply providing therapeutic treatments, nutritious dining, customised fitness and imaginative activities.  Instead, each understands how to layer the process of improving health with practical advice for long-term sustainability.  Furthermore, in a world where artificial intelligence is dominating the conversation, its antithesis, emotional intelligence (EI) is the elusive ingredient people struggle to develop in our busy, hyper-connected world.  Yet it's crucial for decision making and navigating our personal and professional lives successfully.  The Wellbeing Collection hotels display 'EI' superpowers: they are inspiring places that have instinctive teams and exceptional locations that subtly set guests on course for a 360-degree recharge, bolstering physical, mental and emotional states.  From forest bathing and wild swimming to seamless service and joyful design, every stay is rooted in promoting three pillars of wellbeing: rest, reconnection and resilience. 15 exceptional properties EMEA Acro Suites, Crete, Greece eriro, Ehrwald, Austria Euphoria Retreat, Mystras, Greece FORESTIS, Brixen, Italy HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio Allgäu, Balderschwang Bayern, Germany Miramonti Boutique Hotel, Merano, Italy Oasyhotel, San Marcello Piteglio, Italy Quinta da Comporta, Carvalhal, Portugal Teranka, Formentera, Spain APAC Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary, Shaba, Bhutan Gangtey Lodge, Phobjikha Valley, Bhutan Keemala, Phuket, Thailand Namia River Retreat, Hoi An, Vietnam AMER Castle Hot Springs, Morristown, Arizona, USA Rio Perdido, Bagaces, Costa Rica The 15 founding members of the Wellbeing Collection have received the official seal of approval from SLH's Wellbeing Industry Experts, including renowned spa editor Susan D'Arcy and leading wellbeing expert in Sophrology and founder of BeSophro Dominique Antiglio.  Sophrology, a practice combining breathing, gentle movement, relaxation, visualisation, and meditation has been widely used across Europe for over 60 years in medical, educational, corporate, and sports settings. It supports a variety of wellbeing goals, including managing stress, improving sleep, reducing anxiety, easing pain, and preventing burnout. To celebrate the launch of the Wellbeing Collection, SLH Club Members will receive exclusive access to the BeSophro app, featuring the new Travel Reset series, a collection of guided mind-body practices designed to enhance restful travel, from easing flight anxiety and jet lag to helping guests maintain that post-holiday sense of calm.

Luxury hotels in Riyadh and Dubai have fastest Wi-Fi networks in MENA: Ookla

Representative Image   New research by Ookla® a global leader in connectivity intelligence, reveals that luxury hotels in Riyadh and Dubai are setting new benchmarks for high-speed internet connectivity, with some of the fastest Wi-Fi networks in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The research, based on Speedtest Intelligence® data, assessed Wi-Fi performance at 22 top-rated five-star hotels and resorts across the region, identifying exceptional performers and highlighting regional trends in digital connectivity. As travelers increasingly rely on high-speed internet, hotels that prioritise Wi-Fi infrastructure can significantly enhance guest satisfaction and loyalty. The analysis, based on data from October 2023 to October 2024, categorised hotel Wi-Fi performance into three tiers. Top performers encompassed hotels with a median download speed exceeding 100 Mbps, capable of supporting multiple 4K streams, ultra-fast downloads, and lag-free video conferencing. Four Seasons in Riyadh, Raffles the Palm, and Jumeirah Mina Al Salam, both in Dubai, top the list with median download speeds of 154.75 Mbps, 122.82 Mbps, and 121.35 Mbps, respectively. The second group, which were good performers, included hotels with a median download speed between 50 Mbps and 100 Mbps. Download speeds ranged from just over 50 Mbps at Raffles and Fairmont in Doha  to 93.70 Mbps at Rixos Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt. Other notable properties in this group include Burj Al Arab and the Royal Atlantis in Dubai, as well as other hotels in Muscat and Marrakesh. Performance laggards include hotels and resorts with a median download speed below 50 Mbps. Over 45 percent of the properties reviewed fall under this category. While suitable for single high-definition to 4K streaming, this speed has potential limitations, particularly during peak usage. Notably, a few 5-star hotels in Abu Dhabi and Muscat had a median download speed below 15 Mbps. “To assess Wi-Fi performance, we benchmarked median download speeds inside and around the properties over one year. This allowed us to evaluate network performance and stability across hotels with varying occupancy levels and guest profiles. We focused on the most commonly used guest Wi-Fi networks and excluded those specific to events like sporting competitions,” said Karim Yaici, Lead Industry Analyst for the Middle East and Africa at Ookla. While Gulf countries generally have high-speed internet infrastructure and top the Speedtest Global Index™, the subpar performance of some hotels in the region suggests potential issues with Wi-Fi configurations, and not with the capacity of the broadband connection. “The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the demand for seamless internet access, with tourists and business travelers expecting high-speed Wi-Fi for work and leisure. In line with this, cities such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi have significantly invested in their network infrastructure to meet these elevated expectations of digital nomads and professionals,” added Yaici. With a commitment to empowering consumers and businesses with network intelligence to drive digital innovation and connectivity, Ookla helps hospitality property managers design Wi-Fi networks as well as monitor and optimise their performance.
