"Our goal is to enable our customers to travel from any corner of the world to another via Air India and its partner airlines. The expansion of our partnership with Lufthansa Group is a step in that direction, and we are pleased to take this long-standing relationship to the next level,” said Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer, Air India. “With this renewed partnership, our customers will have access to more destinations and greater flexibility to travel across Europe on Lufthansa Group carriers. It also gives us the opportunity to serve Lufthansa Group customers, with warmth and quintessential Indian hospitality, aboard Air India flights. We look forward to continue working closely with our Star Alliance partners in making the world feel like a smaller place,” Aggarwal added. “We are thrilled to strengthen our partnership with Air India and elevate the travel experience for our joint customers. By further enhancing our cooperation, we will increase the travel options between Europe and India and offer our passengers improved access to additional destinations. Lufthansa Group remains committed to India, and we are excited about the possibilities and potential the country and Air India as a partner have to offer”, according to Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer, Lufthansa Group. The expanded partnership significantly boosts flight options and connectivity for travellers between the Indian Subcontinent and Europe with the addition of close to 60 codeshare routes operated by the four airlines across 12 Indian and 26 European cities. The expanded agreements increase the total number of codeshare routes between Air India, Lufthansa and SWISS from 55 to nearly 100. Additionally, the new agreement between Air India and Austrian Airlines adds 26 codeshare routes. This provides greater choice, convenience, and seamless experiences to travellers from both regions. Air India will now offer its customers a total of 26 destinations across Europe and 3 destinations in the Americas beyond its gateways in Europe (Frankfurt, Vienna, and Zurich), with the ‘AI’ designator code placed on the following services operated by airlines in the Lufthansa Group, including Austrian Airlines for the first time: Lufthansa Between Frankfurt and: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Bremen, Brussels, Copenhagen, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Dublin, Geneva, Hamburg, Hannover, Luxembourg, Lyon, Manchester, Marseille, Munich, Nice, Nuremberg, Oslo, Prague, Riga, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Stockholm, Stuttgart, Toulouse, Valencia, - Washington D.C. For example, customers who wish to fly between Delhi and Frankfurt will now have three daily flight options each way with ‘LH’ flight numbers, including two flights operated by Air India and one flight operated by Lufthansa. Both airlines plan to progressively include other destinations in their network to the codeshare arrangements. Air India and the three Lufthansa Group carriers are members of Star Alliance. Frequent flyers will continue to earn and redeem points/miles on all four airlines, while elite status holders of Air India’s Maharaja Club and Lufthansa Group’s Miles & More programmes will benefit from Star Alliance Gold benefits including priority services, extra baggage allowance, and airport lounge access across the world. ITA Airways Joins Lufthansa Group: What It Means for Travellers
If you’re planning your next European adventure, there’s some exciting news on the aviation front that could make your journey even smoother. ITA Airways, Italy’s national carrier, has officially joined the Lufthansa Group. This partnership isn’t just a corporate shuffle—it’s set to bring a host of new benefits to passengers flying with both airlines, including Aussies heading to Europe. A New Chapter in European Air Travel By becoming part of the Lufthansa Group—a conglomerate that already includes airlines like Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Swiss International Airlines, and Edelweiss Air—ITA Airways is poised to enhance the travel experience for its passengers. This synergy promises more seamless connections, expanded loyalty perks, and greater access to lounges across the globe. Boosted Loyalty Programs One of the immediate perks of this partnership is the integration of ITA Airways’ Volare loyalty program with the Lufthansa Group’s Miles & More program. For the 2.7 million members of Volare, this means you can now earn and redeem points not just on ITA Airways flights but also across Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines. Conversely, the 36 million Miles & More members gain the ability to collect and use their points on ITA Airways routes. So whether you’re a frequent flyer hopping between European capitals or embarking on long-haul journeys, your loyalty is now even more rewarding. Access to Over 130 Lounges Starting from 30 March 2025, passengers flying with ITA Airways will gain access to approximately 130 lounges owned by the Lufthansa Group worldwide. This is a significant upgrade, offering a comfortable pre-flight experience complete with complimentary food, beverages, and a tranquil environment to relax or catch up on work. Similarly, Lufthansa Group passengers will be welcomed into ITA Airways lounges, enriching the lounge network available to all travellers within the group. Streamlined Terminal Operations To make transfers more efficient, ITA Airways will relocate its operations to the Lufthansa Group’s terminals at Frankfurt and Munich airports from 30 March 2025. This move is set to simplify connections for passengers, reducing transfer times and the hassle of navigating between terminals. In other Lufthansa hubs, ITA Airways is already operating alongside its group counterparts, so this change brings consistency across the board. Enhanced Codesharing for More Destinations Another significant benefit is the expansion of codeshare agreements between ITA Airways and Lufthansa Group airlines. This arrangement allows passengers to book flights that combine segments operated by multiple carriers within the group on a single ticket. The result? Access to a greater number of destinations and more flexible scheduling options for your travels. From 25 February, all these codeshare connections will be available for booking through the airlines’ websites, apps, and other sales channels. This integration makes planning your trip more straightforward, with the added convenience of managing your bookings in one place. Improved Flight Schedules and Frequencies Flights connecting the Lufthansa Group hubs—Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, and Brussels—with ITA Airways’ main airports in Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate will offer harmonised frequencies and schedules. This means more flight options spread throughout the day, making it easier to find departures and arrivals that fit your itinerary. What Does This Mean for Australian Travellers? For Aussies looking to explore Italy or other parts of Europe, this partnership enhances the travel experience in several ways: Greater Rewards: Earn and redeem loyalty points across a broader network of airlines, accelerating your progress towards rewards like upgrades and free flights. Smooth Connections: Improved scheduling and terminal operations reduce the stress of tight connections, especially when navigating large European hubs. Lounge Access: Enjoy a more comfortable journey with access to lounges during layovers, making those long-haul trips a bit more bearable. Expanded Destinations: With enhanced codesharing, you have more destinations at your fingertips, all bookable through familiar platforms. How to Take Advantage of the New Benefits To make the most of these changes, consider enrolling in the Volare or Miles & More loyalty programmes if you haven’t already done so. Keep an eye out for the updated booking options starting 25 February, and when planning trips after 30 March 2025, be mindful of the new terminal arrangements to ensure a seamless journey. In Summary The integration of ITA Airways into the Lufthansa Group marks a significant shift in European air travel, offering passengers—especially those coming from Australia—more benefits than ever before. From enhanced loyalty programs and expanded lounge access to streamlined operations and more destination choices, your next trip to Europe could be smoother and more rewarding.

Lufthansa Group purchases additional latest-generation long-haul aircraft
The Lufthansa Group is purchasing additional Airbus long-haul aircraft, increasing its firm orders for A350-1000 aircraft from ten to 15. The state-of-the-art aircraft of this order will be delivered between 2028 and 2031. The total value of the order is around two billion US dollars at list price. With a total of 60 A350-900s and 15 A350-1000s, the Lufthansa Group is one of the largest A350 customers worldwide. Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG: “Our order today underscores our great confidence in our long-standing, close and successful partnership with Airbus. With the state-of-the-art A350 long-haul jets, we are accelerating the largest fleet modernization in our history. We are investing more than ever before in our history to make air transport more sustainable, to achieve our CO₂ reduction targets and at the same time offer our customers the highest level of comfort with a first-class travel experience. Including today's order, the Lufthansa Group has ordered 770 aircraft from Airbus throughout its history and is proud to be the Airbus’ largest customer worldwide. With the upcoming integration of ITA Airways in January, the Airbus fleet of Lufthansa Group Airlines will grow by another 100 short- and long-haul aircraft.” New aircraft biggest lever for CO₂ reduction With a current fleet of around 740 commercial aircraft, the Lufthansa Group is pursuing a long-term fleet strategy focused on premium quality, cost efficiency and emissions reduction. Including the latest aircraft order, the Lufthansa Group currently has a total of around 250 new, fuel-saving aircraft on its order list, including 100 long-haul aircraft of the latest design. In the medium term, the highly efficient twin-engine long-haul jets are slated to replace four-engine aircraft types that are gradually being phased out. These include the Boeing 747-400, Airbus A340-600 and Airbus A340-300 aircraft types. Compared to their predecessors, the new additions to the Lufthansa Group fleet consume up to 35 percent less fuel consumption and emit correspondingly less CO₂. The Lufthansa Group aims to halve its net CO₂ emissions by 2030 compared to 2019 through reduction and compensation measures, and to achieve a neutral CO₂ balance by 2050. The Lufthansa Group has already ordered ten A350-1000s back in March 2023, with deliveries due to start in April 2026. This aircraft type is 242 feet (73.8 meters) long and offers around 15 per cent more capacity than the A350-900.
