India Is Driving Krabi’s Biggest Tourism Reinvention in Decades — And Thailand Is All In

Earlier this month, as Krabi concluded its two-city India roadshow in Bengaluru and Mumbai, it became clear that Thailand’s Andaman jewel is entering a new phase of tourism evolution. With new direct flights, rising demand from luxury and wedding segments, and a growing focus on sustainability, Krabi is positioning itself as far more than a beach escape — it is shaping itself into a premium, experience-driven destination for Indian travellers. Travel Daily Media spoke with Nattachit Oonsiam, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Mumbai Office, who outlined how Krabi is redefining its appeal and why India sits at the heart of this transformation. Below are edited excerpts from our conversation. Travel Daily Media (TDM): India continues to be one of Thailand’s strongest markets. Why is the Indian traveller especially important for Krabi right now? Nattachit Oonsiam (NO): Krabi is at a very interesting moment in its tourism journey. For years it has been loved for its beaches and islands, but today it is evolving into something much broader — a destination that offers sustainable, nature-focused, gastronomic and cultural experiences, and is increasingly attractive to niche, high-value markets such as film tourism, MICE and weddings. Indian travellers are essential in this transition because they bring both volume and diversity. We are seeing demand from honeymooners, families, friends travelling together, wedding groups and incentive travellers. There is also a noticeable rise in the number of Indians looking for authentic, responsible travel experiences, which aligns perfectly with Krabi’s positioning as a prototype destination for ethical and community-based tourism. TDM: IndiGo’s new direct flights to Krabi have generated a lot of excitement. What early trends are you seeing? NO: The direct flights from Mumbai and Bengaluru have changed the market almost instantly. They have significantly shortened travel time, and that convenience is shaping new traveller behaviour. We already see stronger weekend and shoulder-season demand, increasing interest from families and small groups, and more flexible, multi-destination itineraries — for example, travellers pairing Krabi with Bangkok or Phuket for a longer holiday. The visa exemption for Indian citizens has further accelerated interest. Travellers now feel Krabi is not just beautiful, but also seamless and easy to access, which is a powerful combination. TDM: Indian travellers increasingly want luxury, weddings and immersive itineraries. How is Krabi adapting to these expectations? NO: Krabi is transforming its offering to match these segments. The region’s private-villa inventory, boutique resorts and experiential operators are elevating their services with curated island experiences, bespoke diving and boating routes, high-end honeymoon programmes, and a growing focus on gastronomy. One standout example is Krabi’s cave-dining experience at The Grotto, which is becoming very popular among Indian couples. We also see rising interest in film tourism, especially with major productions like Jurassic World Rebirth showcasing Krabi’s landscapes. All of this helps position Krabi as a place where travellers can enjoy intimacy, exclusivity and a strong sense of place. TDM: Sustainability is a central theme in global travel, including among Indian tourists. What steps is Krabi taking to grow responsibly? NO: Krabi is being developed as a sustainability prototype for Thailand, which is something we are very proud of. The Amazing Krabi Green Guide Fest, for example, brings the community, hotels and tourism operators together to embed the “7 Greens” approach — from green gastronomy and green learning to low-impact tourism activities. This is not a cosmetic effort; it is creating real change on the ground through waste-reduction programmes, low-carbon travel routes, local sourcing initiatives and community-led experiences. The goal is clear: to ensure that Krabi’s growth benefits local people and protects its natural ecosystems while giving visitors a deeper, more meaningful connection to the destination. TDM: After the strong trade response to the roadshow, what can Indian partners expect from TAT and Krabi in 2025–26? NO: The roadshow was a reaffirmation of Krabi’s growing relevance in the Indian market, and we plan to build on that momentum. You will see more familiarisation trips for Indian agents, deeper collaborations with airlines and tour operators, and targeted campaigns for key segments such as honeymooners, wedding groups, young families and women travellers. We also intend to scale our digital storytelling to showcase Krabi’s luxury, sustainability and experiential strengths. With the visa exemption and Thailand Digital Arrival Card making travel even easier, this is an ideal moment for Indian agents to package Krabi as a seamless, high-value experience for their clients.

TAT holds two-city roadshow in India to promote Krabi

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Mumbai Office, in collaboration with the Krabi Hotel Association, recently wrapped a successful two-city roadshow, spotlighting Krabi for Indian travellers across leisure and MICE segments. The events in Bengaluru (29 October) and Mumbai (31 October) connected 14 of Krabi's leading hotels, resorts, DMCs, and IndiGo Airlines with a curated group of India's top travel planners. The roadshow aimed to deepen Thailand’s long-standing partnership with the Indian travel trade and introduce them to Krabi of today, a destination that has elegantly expanded from its famous beaches and islands into a hub for luxury seekers, honeymooners, and high-impact MICE and wedding groups. The events opened with welcome remarks and insights from Nattachit Oonsiam, Director of the TAT Mumbai Office, and Kasmaporn Limpanapongthep, President of the Krabi Hotel Association. Both emphasised Krabi’s readiness and enthusiasm for the Indian traveller, underscoring its unique blend of raw natural beauty and sophisticated infrastructure perfectly suited for all traveller segments. In both cities, conversations quickly moved beyond the pristine postcard images to the practical opportunities for Indian travellers: curated experiences, exclusive property updates, and a shared focus on the value-driven, experiential travel that Indian tourists now actively seek. A central theme during the roadshow was the significant upgrade in air access to Krabi. The recent introduction of IndiGo’s direct flights from both Bengaluru and Mumbai to this Andaman gem, has placed it within easy reach and is expected to fuel demand from both leisure and corporate segments. The evenings witnessed lively networking, one-on-one B2B meetings, and a vibrant exchange of ideas that promise to translate into bespoke itineraries for Indian tourists. This roadshow did more than just showcase a destination; it signalled a strategic push. By highlighting Krabi’s evolving profile, TAT demonstrated a forward-looking tourism strategy for Thailand, one that champions regional diversity, invests in sustainable growth, and leverages enhanced connectivity to open new doors for collaboration with the Indian travel trade.

Thailand welcomes Etihad Airways’ inaugural Abu Dhabi–Krabi direct flight

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) hosted a welcome reception at Krabi International Airport for the inaugural Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on 9 October 2025. The milestone marks an important step in expanding air connectivity between Thailand and the Middle East, while reinforcing Krabi’s position as a leading destination for beach, wellness, cultural, and sustainable tourism. The welcoming ceremony was presided over by Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, together with Ms. Sasithorn Kittidhrakul, Deputy Minister of Interior; Mr. Chayatan Phromsorn, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport; Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor; Mr. Ratthasart Chidchoo, Governor of Krabi Province; and Mr. Danai Ruengsorn, Director-General of the Department of Airports, along with TAT executives and representatives from government and private sector tourism partners. Passengers arriving on flight EY424, operated by an Airbus A321LR with 160 seats, were greeted with a traditional Thai performance and special souvenirs, reflecting the warmth and hospitality embodied in the Amazing Thailand brand. The new Abu Dhabi–Krabi route increases seat capacity between Thailand and the Middle East by approximately 7,650 seats per month — an increase of about 16 per cent over current levels — thereby enhancing convenience for travellers and stimulating regional tourism growth. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said, “This new direct connection between Abu Dhabi and Krabi opens fresh opportunities for sustainable tourism development in southern Thailand. TAT is committed to empowering local destinations to deliver authentic, high-quality experiences that blend cultural richness with environmental responsibility and community engagement.” Building on this vision,  Ratthasart Chidchoo, Governor of Krabi Province, added that the province is ready to welcome travellers from Abu Dhabi and beyond. “Krabi is not only famed for its spectacular islands and marine attractions but also for its rich cultural and community-based tourism experiences. Visitors can discover authentic local lifestyles and distinctive encounters that make Krabi truly memorable,” he said. Krabi’s strong foundation in sustainability further reinforces its appeal. Earlier this month, Lanta Archipelago National Park was named among Thailand’s ten winners in the 2025 Green Destinations Top 100 Stories, underscoring the province’s leadership in responsible tourism through the Krabi Prototype model supported by TAT. Thapanee added that the new Etihad Airways service reflects TAT’s ongoing collaboration with international carriers to enhance access to southern Thailand and expand the Middle East travel market. “The route complements TAT’s efforts to attract high-value visitors seeking health and wellness, luxury, family, and halal-friendly experiences. With Thailand’s growing reputation as a global Medical and Wellness Hub, we are committed to offering meaningful travel experiences that reflect the essence of Amazing Thailand,” she said. To further promote the new connection, the TAT Dubai Office has organised a familiarisation trip for Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to explore Krabi. The itinerary highlights local gastronomy, cultural identity, and themed experiences such as Hidden Gem Cities and the Jurassic World: Rebirth film location route, showcasing southern Thailand’s diverse appeal to discerning Middle Eastern travellers. Between January and September 2025, Thailand welcomed approximately 618,000 visitors from the Middle East, with arrivals projected to reach 850,000 by year-end. Middle Eastern tourists spend an average of 10 days in Thailand and about 104,000 Baht per trip, reinforcing the kingdom’s tourism growth and its positioning as a welcoming, world-class destination for global travellers.

Krabi takes centre stage at TAT’s Global Meaningful Travel Summit

The Krabi Prototype took the spotlight at the recently concluded 2025 Global Meaningful Travel Summit held simultaneously in Bangkok and Krabi. This is the first time that the event was staged anywhere in Asia and it was a joint initiative of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and sustainable tourism non-profit Tourism Cares.  The summit brought the Krabi Prototype to centre stage as Thailand welcomed over 40 travel executives, tour operators, airlines, and media from the United States and beyond to explore its approach to sustainable and meaningful travel. The Krabi Prototype initiative, developed in partnership with local stakeholders, positions the province as Thailand’s leading pilot for responsible tourism.  That said, TAT is accelerating operators into national sustainability standards, including STGs STAR, the Thailand Tourism Awards, and CF–Hotels, while advancing international benchmarks such as Green Destinations recognition for Mu Ko Lanta National Park.  To date, Krabi counts 16 award–winning operators under the Thailand Tourism Awards, 119 STAR–certified businesses, and 65 CF–Hotels actively reducing carbon footprints through clean energy, solar power, plastic reduction, and local sourcing. Highlighting the Krabi Prototype The summit highlighted Krabi’s emergence under the Krabi Prototype, TAT’s flagship model for sustainable tourism development.  Known worldwide for Maya Bay, the Phi Phi Islands, and Railay Beach, as well as its hot springs and limestone landscapes, Krabi is advancing a long-term commitment to protect its pristine environment and community way of life.  The province is designated within the Andaman Development Zone under Thailand’s strategic tourism product clusters, underscoring its strong potential as a sustainable destination.  This was further reinforced in 2023 when Khlong Thom Hot Springs earned recognition on the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories list for environment and climate, a global accolade that demonstrates Krabi’s readiness to serve as a model for responsible travel. What Krabi means to Thailand According to TAT governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool: “Krabi represents the balance we aspire to achieve across Thailand where natural beauty and local culture are preserved while communities benefit from tourism. Hosting the Global Meaningful Travel Summit here demonstrates to the world that sustainable tourism is not just a vision but a reality that can be experienced today. Through the Krabi Prototype, we show that sustainable travel is possible, practical, and rewarding for all.” During the summit, delegates engaged in immersive tours with local communities including Laem Sak and Ban Nai Nang, where grassroots initiatives such as waste management, traditional crafts, and community-led tourism showcased practical models of sustainability.  Beyond the official programme, Krabi offers a wealth of eco–conscious experiences under the Krabi Prototype, from mangrove tours in Ban Thung Yee Peng to marine conservation activities around Ko Ngai.  Together, these reflect how the province is redefining tourism’s impact by embracing low-carbon travel, eco-certified accommodations, and regenerative practices. Krabi’s sustainability journey is further supported by its communities: eight villages, including Koh Klang, Nai Nang, and Laem Sak, are leading the way through initiatives such as long–tail boat tours, batik workshops, stingless beekeeping, and multi–ethnic cultural tourism.  These projects, combined with waste–to–energy management systems on the islands and strict local pledges to preserve beaches free of jet-skis and mass beach furniture, have become a provincial declaration of sustainability shared for more than a decade. Krabi also exemplifies Thailand’s dual economic strengths, as, alongside its tourism appeal as a bucket-list destination, the province is the nation’s second-largest producer of palm oil and home to rubber, Musang King durians, and robusta coffee, reflecting the integration of agriculture and tourism. Its cinematic scenery continues to attract global productions, most recently Jurassic World: Rebirth, further boosting international visibility. Taken all in, the summit reinforced how the Krabi Prototype contributes to Thailand’s broader sustainability agenda.  An expanding map Over the past two years, TAT and Tourism Cares have expanded the Meaningful Travel Map of Thailand to include more than 45 vetted organisations, many of which were visited during the summit.  Among these, eleven Krabi operators have also joined Tourism Cares’ global network of over 160 sustainable tourism partners, extending the province’s reach to international markets.  By linking Krabi’s achievements with international networks, Thailand strengthens its positioning in key markets such as the United States, where demand for meaningful travel continues to grow. As Kiatphaibool put it: “The Global Meaningful Travel Summit in Krabi is more than a meeting—it is a milestone. By bringing the Krabi Prototype to centre stage, it has given the world a glimpse of Thailand’s future, where tourism safeguards our resources, strengthens our communities, and delivers meaningful value to travellers. Krabi is our prototype, and our goal is to scale this model across the country so that Thailand remains at the forefront of sustainable tourism.”
