Japan set to host Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai

As Expo 2020 Dubai gets ready to close its doors after an extraordinarily successful run, Japan gears up to host the next edition of the global event. Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai Japan will take place from  April 13 to October 13, 2025. The event will take place under the banner of Designing Future Society for Our Lives, aiming to be a laboratory for future society and a place where the world’s knowledge will be brought together and shared to help resolve global issues. Supporting the overall concept are the event’s three sub-themes: Saving Lives – Aimed at fighting infectious diseases and extending lifespans through activities such as infant nutrition and vaccinations, lifestyle changes in diet and exercise, and sanitation and the prevention of infection. Empowering Lives – Focusing on education and work utilizing AI and robots in the areas of work, lifelong learning and community involvement. Connecting Lives – Promoting cross-cultural understanding and spurring innovation, involving stakeholders including governments, companies, NGOs, the finance sector, and students. Osaka’s Yumeshima island will host Expo 2025, with organisers expecting 28.2 million visitors during its six-month opening. More than 150 countries and 25 organisations are also expected to participate. The host region, Kansai, is located in the west of Japan’s main island of Honshu, and holds many attractions for visitors. Home to the exciting city of Osaka, Japan’s second largest metropolitan area after Tokyo and a major food destination, visitors to Kansai will also be able to discover the ancient former capitals of Kyoto and Nara, beautiful historical castles and temples such as the 1,200-year-old Enryakuji on Hieizan mountain, dramatic nature and coastal scenery, and much more. Kansai is also home to the pioneering Kamikatsu Zero Waste Center, a community in Tokushima Prefecture with a population of 1,500 built around a concept of generating zero waste. Back in 2003, the town made Japan’s first zero waste declaration, and today the recycling rate exceeds 80%. It’s also possible to step back into Expo history at the Expo ’70 Commemorative Park, about 30 minutes north of central Osaka, the venue of the 1970 Japan World Exposition. The first event of its kind in Asia, the Expo ran under the theme of Progress and Harmony for Mankind, a topic that’s still as relevant today as it was all those years ago. Today, the park is filled with 5,000 cherry trees, becoming a popular spot for sakura viewing in spring, and visitors can still see the Expo legacy in the form of the 70-metre Tower of the Sun by Taro Okamoto, a work of art that left a lasting impression on visitors to the Expo, and that’s still a favourite of visitors to the park. Those coming to Osaka in the next few years will have plenty to look forward to in terms of accommodation, with the opening of new luxury hotels including Four Seasons Hotel Osaka in 2024 and the Waldorf Astoria Osaka opening in 2025.

Kansai Airports trial SITA robot KATE to slash queues and reduce wait time

Kansai Airports, the operator of Kansai International Airport (KIX) and Osaka International Airport (ITAMI), is working with SITA on a trial of KATE – SITA’s intelligent check-in kiosk. KATE will autonomously move to congested areas in the airport with the aim to reduce check-in queues, promising to relegate check-in queues to the past. KATE was presented to a packed media crowd at a press conference held at Kansai International Airport, where its capabilities were demonstrated to an impressed audience. With the help of artificial intelligence and geo-navigation – the kiosk moved seamlessly to areas of the airport where additional check-in services were required. KATE’s collision avoidance technology, combined with various data sources, decides where it should be – whether at a busy area to ease congestion or to a docking station to recharge when power runs low.   The trial with KATE at Kansai will run for one month starting in February at Terminal 1, with many airlines including Air France, Air China, Cathay Pacific Airways, Japan Airlines, Korean Air, KLM, All Nippon Airways, Asiana Airlines and United Airlines. Sumesh Patel, SITA's president of Asia Pacific, shares his thoughts on the trial: “Japan has always been a forerunner in robotic innovations and intelligent technology. It is no surprise that Kansai Airports is leading the industry with the trial of SITA’s intelligent check-in kiosk, KATE. SITA has been the technology partner of Kansai Airports for the past three years, and we are thrilled to be partnering with the airport to introduce intelligent machines to improve the passenger experience. We will work with Kansai Airport to evaluate how this new technology is able to provide an even better traveller experience at the airport.” Check out SITA's video below to learn more about the helpful robot. https://youtu.be/oQ69r-2VX-I

Within this thoughtfully-designed property are 221 rooms and suites continuing the kisetsukan theme with natural wood elements and expansive windows that frame mesmerising views of either Osaka Castle Park or Naniwa No Miya Park.  Each space allows guests to witness Japan's changing seasons from their private sanctuary while honouring both traditional Japanese aesthetics and contemporary comfort. Meanwhile, Patina Osaka’s signature restaurant P72 takes diners on a tour through Japan's 72 micro-seasons with conscious cuisine that celebrates local purveyors and seasonal bounty.  The space features a dramatic 52-metre organic installation of 'roots' constructed from reclaimed Osaka wood factory scraps, while an edible botanical garden engages all senses.  The restaurant embodies Patina's approach to dining, which emphasises locally-sourced ingredients, sustainable practices, and culinary experiences that highlight the connection between food, people and place. Creative collaborations with global visionaries The property showcases collaborations with world-renowned talents, including famed Japanese artist Verdy, who serves as Creative Partner and contributes to an exclusive merchandise collection that celebrates Osaka's vibrant culture.  Sound pioneer Devon Turnbull (OJAS) has created The Listening Room by OJAS, an audiophile haven that elevates hi-fidelity sound to high art through custom-built speakers and a curated vinyl collection. UN Tourism holds two key forums at Expo 2025 Osaka

UN Tourism recently hosted two official forums at the ongoing Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, uniting public and private sector leaders to focus on key priorities for global tourism. UN Tourism director of innovation, education, and investment Antonio López De Ávila expressed pride in being able to show that tourism is more than a sector, but more of a catalyst for sustainable development, social inclusion, and tech advancement.  López De Ávila  said: “At UN Tourism, we are placing women’s talent at the heart of this journey, supporting the creativity, leadership, and resilience of women across the globe. We also prioritize investments. We work to ensure every dollar invested contributes to a greener, fairer, and more resilient future.”  Celebrating the work of women in tourism The Celebrating Female Founders Forum held on Monday, 28th April, was dedicated to highlighting female-led innovation, promoting inclusion in tourism technology, and emphasizing the importance of mentorship networks.  The event made clear the critical role women play in the tech startup ecosystem, exploring strategies for overcoming challenges and leveraging opportunities to create a more inclusive and diverse tech industry. The programme featured opening remarks from representatives of the United Nations at Expo 2025, the Japan Tourism Agency, and UN Tourism.  A key panel gathered senior female executives from leading travel groups, digital tourism platforms, and international hospitality companies.  The discussion explored how innovation, inclusion, and strategic leadership are transforming the tourism sector, with a particular focus on advancing diversity, equity, and market access. In a vibrant pitching round, female founders from Japan (ByFood), Korea (NomadHer), the United Arab Emirates (Xenios Academy), SAR, China (Shake to Win), and the United States (Greether) presented forward-looking business models, showcasing how women are connecting technology with sustainable growth and social impact. Investing the in future of global tourism Between 2019 and 2024, the Asia-Pacific region attracted a total of 442 foreign direct investment (FDI) projects in the tourism sector, with an estimated capital expenditure of US$37.55 billion.  These investments resulted in over 77,000 direct jobs and involved 274 companies across various destinations.  Japan accounted for 33 FDI projects, totalling an investment of US$2.57 billion. Recognizing this potential, UN Tourism hosted the Global Tourism Investment Forum: Co-creating Culture for the Future on Tuesday, 29th April.  The forum emphasized on key investment trends and strategies for sustainable, community-centred tourism growth.  Along with a  fireside chat moderated by Nikkei Inc, platforming local voices such as Kiraku Inc or a community led initiative from Vanuatu, a high-level dialogue emphasized the role of investment as a driver of sustainable and inclusive growth.  The discussions benefitted from the participation of private sector leaders, including executives from JTB, Kansai Airports, Plug and Play Japan, Hyatt, Destination Capital and Dossen, and guided by Travel Voice Japan. As the Forum came to a close, participants were reminded that tourism investment goes beyond infrastructure and capital: it is fundamentally about people, culture, and long-term impact.  From heritage-led models to innovation-driven partnerships, the sessions demonstrated that shaping the future of tourism demands vision, collaboration, and a shared commitment to inclusive and sustainable development.
