Air India’s flagship A350 makes ultra long-haul debut on Delhi-New York (JFK) route
Air India, India’s leading global airline, has introduced its flagship A350-900 aircraft on daily, non-stop flights between Delhi and New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK). This will be followed by a 5x weekly A350 service from Delhi to Newark’s Liberty International Airport (EWR) commencing January 2, 2025. With these deployments, Air India introduces to travellers visiting the New York region its all-new interiors, including private suites in Business Class and a Premium Economy cabin, as well as an award-winning new Inflight Entertainment (IFE) system, enhanced catering, and new serviceware. The deployment of this flagship product, which also recently commenced on the Delhi-London Heathrow route, marks a significant milestone in the airline’s post-privatization transformation program. Introducing Air India Premium Economy The A350 deployment brings Air India’s Premium Economy experience for the first time on the Delhi-New York route, offering 24 extra-legroom seats in a 2-4-2 configuration in a dedicated, upscale cabin. Each suite offers direct aisle access, sliding privacy doors, and a personal wardrobe. Air India, thus, becomes the only non-stop carrier between India and the United States to offer private suites with sliding doors in Business Class. On-board Wi-Fi coming soon Air India is preparing to launch its new inflight connectivity service on international flights operated by the A350. The service is expected to be launched in the coming weeks, enabling guests to use Wi-Fi on their own devices and stay connected. The all-new Air India experience The A350 flights offer travellers an elevated on-board experience, featuring enhanced meal menus, new serviceware, new bedding, and updated amenity kits for Business and Premium Economy guests, exclusively designed by Ferragamo and TUMI, respectively. The seats across all cabins on the A350 come with the latest-generation Panasonic eX3 IFE system and HD screens that offer more than 3,000 hours of entertainment content from around the world in 13 international and 8 Indian regional languages. Campbell Wilson, chief executive officer & managing director, Air India, said: “The A350 is not just another aircraft for Air India; it is a symbol of the “new Air India” that is emerging through our 5-year Vihaan.AI post-privatisation transformation program. Guest feedback on the aircraft and new customer experience has been exceptionally positive since it was launched on the Delhi-London Heathrow route in September, so we are excited to now bring it to New York. We are also looking forward to commencing the full interior refit of existing aircraft in 2025 which, together with the hundreds of new aircraft on order, will take Air India to new heights.”

These include new chinaware, new tableware and glassware, new bedding, and updated amenity kits for Business and Premium Economy guests, exclusively designed by Ferragamo and TUMI, respectively. Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Air India, said: “We are encouraged by the positive guest feedback we have received from the domestic deployment of our A350s to offer our hero product on the Delhi-New York JFK and Delhi-Newark routes. This is a significant leap forward for our U.S. operations that also underscores our commitment to continuous improvement.” “The new seats, new inflight entertainment systems, and new soft products will together provide our guests with great comfort and service that are representative of the new Air India. We believe this enhanced offering will solidify Air India's position as a leading carrier and attract travelers seeking a world-class flying experience between India and the United States.” Upgraded cabin interiors on other U.S. routes With deployment of the A350, 60% of all Air India flights to the U.S. will feature new or upgraded cabin interiors. Over the last few months, Air India has been progressively replacing its legacy aircraft with newer ones on other U.S. routes, as part of its continued effort to offer guests a significantly improved flying experience. These aircraft feature upgraded seats and inflight entertainment systems. The airline now operates its three class-configured Boeing 777-200LR on all non-stop flights between India (Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru) and San Francisco with upgraded cabin interiors, except a 3x weekly Delhi-San Francisco service. Each of these aircraft features 28 private suites with full-flat beds in Business, 48 wide seats in Premium Economy with extra legroom, and 212 seats in Economy as well as updated IFE systems. This allows Air India to consistently offer Premium Economy options to travelers taking non-stop flights to/from San Francisco. Air India also operates a three class-configured Boeing 777-300ER on all flights from Mumbai to New York JFK and Newark, featuring 8 luxurious First class suites, 40 full-flat beds in Business, 280 seats in Economy, and updated IFE systems. SITA and JFK’s the new terminal one master systems integration alliance open pre-production center
To ensure the seamless opening of The New Terminal One (NTO) at John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK), representatives of the terminal project design-build team, including NTO, AECOM Tishman Construction, Schneider Electric, Faith Group, and SITA, today officially opened a new pre-production center where all technology will be tested before being deployed in the airport’s largest and most modern terminal. SITA, the systems integrator that is part of the Master Systems Integrator (MSI) Alliance collaborating with the design-build team, will play a pivotal role in the project’s success, ensuring the new terminal opens with all systems tested and ready to use. Located near Islip, Long Island, the new JFK Terminal One Pre-Production Center will test critical systems such as biometric passenger touchpoints, baggage systems, and airport management systems. Upon opening from 2026, The New Terminal One will offer travelers a world-class experience, revolutionizing the standard of travel for both visitors and New York residents. Technology provided by SITA and other suppliers will help streamline the passenger experience through biometric touchpoints while providing the airport operator with integrated systems to manage everything from baggage to aircraft turnaround. Simon Gandy, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of NTO, said: “The New Terminal One will transform travel as JFK’s dedicated international terminal, connecting New York with the rest of the world. Our bold ambition to set a new benchmark for world-class design and service will position us to be among the top five airport terminals around the globe. Technology will play a key role in bringing that ambition to life and this new pre-production center ensures our readiness for opening day, enabling us to make every experience at The New Terminal One an extraordinary moment to remember." Jim Durkin, Executive Vice President at AECOM Tishman Construction, a leader of the project design-build team, said: “To deliver a world-class airport facility that our city deserves and expects, we want to be sure that every system works flawlessly. The new JFK Terminal Pre-Production Center is an investment in achieving that ambition, enabling us to test our systems before we hand them over to NTO.” David Rellinger, Vice President for Schneider Electric, a member of the NTO MSI Alliance under the design-build team, said: “Several years of collaborative planning amongst the design, integration, and construction firms for The New Terminal One have created a partnership ready to deliver a state-of-the-art terminal to JFK Airport and New York City. Schneider Electric is proud to deliver the network infrastructure at New Terminal One that will enable the MSI Alliance to achieve our client’s vision and set a new standard for passenger experience, operational efficiency, sustainability, and safety. The pre-production center is a symbol of the dedication from every stakeholder to make technology a centerpiece of New Terminal One’s success.” Faith Varwig, Principal at Faith Group, the Engineer of Record for MSI packages under the design-build team, said: “NTO’s operating goals and objectives will require delivery of a state-of-the-art, industry-leading terminal environment. This approach requires a much higher level of data integration and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to support dozens of business processes all focused on delivering a seamless experience for operators and travelers alike. Creation of the pre-production environments offers several advantages in the software development process including risk mitigation, optimized performance, alternative analysis, and both time and cost savings. This process helps to ensure that the investment made is fully functional to meet the goals and objectives set forth and avoid surprises. JFK’s investment in a pre-production center shows their commitment to designing a world-class terminal that exudes technological excellence on day one.” Matthys Serfontein, SITA President of Americas, said: “Having supported the opening of new airports in the US and around the world, we understand that airports are highly integrated environments with dozens of stakeholders and systems that need to work seamlessly together. With the new pre-production center, we can put each system through its paces before it is deployed in the new terminal, supporting a timely and flawless opening.” Pictured at the NTO pre-production center ribbon cutting ceremony, left to right: Dave Rellinger, Vice President, US Branches, Schneider Electric; Luna Katbah, Director Airport Systems, NTO; Jim Durkin, Executive Vice President, Tishman Construction; Anthony Natale, Sales Vice President North America, SITA; Faith Varwig, Managing Principal, Faith Group.
United Airlines Confirms Suspension of Services at JFK Airport
United Airlines has announced that it will suspend service to John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) in New York City beginning in late October 2022. Last September, United Airlines threatened to stop flying to New York’s main airport, JFK, if the federal government would not allow United to expand its operations there. United Airlines resumed service in 2021 after the pandemic, but since then has reduced the frequency of its JFK–West Coast flights to twice daily. United’s “too-small-to-be-competitive” schedule out of JFK and the beginning of the winter season, often a peak period for flights, are cited in a document obtained by Reuters as reasons for the airline’s “tough choice” to suspend operations. United claimed it had to temporarily cease operations at JFK because of “our present, too-small-to-be-competitive operation out of JFK” combined with the start of the Winter season, where more airlines would run their slots when they resumed flying into JFK. There was no word from the airline on when they may restart the service. United has stated that the airport’s 100 employees will be relocated to nearby stations. The company has stressed that no jobs will be lost due to the closure. Also, Reuters reports that the FAA has confirmed that it is “committed to helping increase the capacity of New York City airports and airspace without compromising safety. The FAA stated, “We will award future slots per our fair and well-established method to encourage competitiveness.”
American Airlines and British Airways to unveil joint operations at JFK’s Terminal 8
American Airlines and British Airways announced more details regarding plans to co-locate operations at John F. Kennedy International Airport’s (JFK) Terminal 8 beginning December 1, 2022. Enabled by a $400 million investment to redevelop, expand and enhance the terminal, the move will bring the Atlantic Joint Business partners closer together. Jointly, the terminal investments and co-location will offer a more seamless customer experience while supporting the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s ambitious plan to transform JFK into a leading global airport. “American is eager to welcome British Airways to their new home at JFK,” said American’s Chief Customer Officer Alison Taylor. “Their move to Terminal 8 further deepens our longstanding partnership and makes it easier than ever for customers traveling between New York and London or onward across our global networks.” American and British Airways were the first carriers to begin redevelopment efforts at JFK, breaking ground in Jan. 2020 on five new widebody gates, four new widebody hardstand parking positions, an enhanced baggage handling system, new customer amenities and expanded premium guest offerings — including approximately 130,000 square feet of new and renovated terminal space. Tom Stevens, British Airways’ Director of Brand and Customer Experience said: “New York holds a special place in our heart as one of our most well-loved and important destinations. Our move to the redeveloped and expanded Terminal 8 will bring a range of benefits for our customers, including a better transfer experience, enabling them to travel to more than 30 destinations across the U.S., Caribbean and Latin America with American Airlines. British Airways will remain in Terminal 7 until Dec. 1, 2022, and we have continued to invest in the experience for our customers, including our check-in area, concessions and lounges.”
Singapore Airlines to launch non-stop flights to New York JFK in November
Starting November 9, Singapore Airlines will return to New York when it launches non-stop flights between Singapore and John F. Kennedy International Airport. SQ24 will operate three times a week from Singapore Changi Airport to JFK International Airport. Also, SQ23 will operate thrice a week from JFK to Changi Airport starting November 11. Operating to JFK International Airport would allow Singapore Airlines to better accommodate a mix of passenger and cargo traffic on its services to New York in the current operating climate. SIA’s non-stop services to New York would also be supported by the growing number of transfer passengers who can now transit via Singapore’s Changi Airport. SIA also anticipates significant cargo demand from a range of industries based in the New York metro area, including pharmaceuticals, e-commerce and technology firms. The new service will provide the only non-stop air cargo link from the U.S. Northeast to Singapore, which serves as a regional distribution hub for many major U.S.-based companies. The airline will operate the Airbus A350-900 long-range aircraft on the route. This aircraft is configured with 42 Business Class, 24 Premium Economy Class and 187 Economy Class seats. Currently, SIA operates non-stop services to Los Angeles. It will continue to review its operations to the United States and assess the growing demand for air travel amid the ongoing recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, before deciding to reinstate services to other points in the country. “Operating these flights between Singapore and New York’s JFK International Airport represent an important step in the rebuilding of our global network. Non-stop ultra-long services are the bedrock of our services to the key U.S. market. We will continue to ramp up existing services and reinstate other points as the demand for both passenger and cargo services return,” said Lee Lik Hsin, executive vice president commercial for Singapore Airlines. “Despite the challenging times for the airline industry, there are some early signs of optimism about a recovery in air travel. Our customers say that they are increasingly confident about air travel, given the robust health and safety measures that are in place, as well as testing regimes to protect them and our staff. This optimism is also driven by recent moves by countries such as Singapore, which are easing the restrictions on both transit and inbound passengers in a safe and gradual manner. “The fundamental importance of air travel remains unchanged despite the pandemic. Air travel can bridge long distances and physically bring together families and friends, support both business and leisure trips, and has a direct impact on economic growth and job creation. That gives us confidence about the medium to long-term prospects for the industry.”
