Jetstar Asia adds more weekend services to Bangkok and Manila, retimes Ho Chi Minh City

In August, Jetstar Asia will increase the number of services it operates to Bangkok and Manila, providing customers even more options when visiting two of Southeast Asia’s most popular metropolitan cities. As demand for travel to Manila continues to increase, Jetstar Asia will operate two additional morning services on Sunday and Monday from 1 August to meet the pent-up demand. Jetstar Asia will now operate 13 services a week to the Philippines’ capital with one-way low fares start from just SGD138. From 6 August, Jetstar Asia will operate an additional Saturday morning service between Singapore and Bangkok, increasing its services to eight return services a week. The additional service will help accommodate transiting customers from codeshare partners, Qantas, Emirates, Srilankan Air and Finnair. One-way low fares start from just SGD96. Mr Woo Wai Keong, Jetstar Asia’s Regional Sales Manager for SEA, said it was encouraging to see demand for air travel continue to recover as consumer confidence is restored. “In July, Jetstar Asia’s Load Factor averaged over 90 per cent meaning we are welcoming more passengers on board our flights and are making the world more accessible for our customers again,” Mr. Woo said. “By restoring and growing our short-haul network, we’re helping reconnect families and friends, giving our customers more opportunities to take a well-deserved break, while helping rebuild economies of the communities we fly to.” Starting from 19 August, Jetstar Asia will retime two services between Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City, to depart on Friday and Sunday evenings instead of Wednesday and Sunday mornings, allowing customers to make more of their stay. The service also helps customers connect from Qantas, Emirates, Srilankan Air, Finnair and KLM flights. The turnaround return flight from Ho Chi Minh will depart at 10:00pm and arrive in Singapore at 1:00am with one-way low fares start from SGD73. Jetstar Asia currently operates more than 200 flights a week from Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 1 to 12 key destinations across Southeast Asia.

Jetstar Asia boosts services to key Southeast Asia ports

Jetstar Asia will increase the number of services it operates to key Southeast Asian ports with the aim to create essential travel links and assist with freight in the region. In addition to the current services to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Manila, Jetstar Asia will reintroduce weekly services to Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh City and Penang from today and weekly services to Clark and Medan from the week commencing 17 August. Two additional weekly services to Manila will also be operated from 15 August 2020. These services are subject to regulatory approval and are only available to citizens and permanent residents who are returning home, or those with prior approval for travel. Customers must check with the relevant authorities to ensure they are eligible to travel. On board, safety remains the first priority and while the risk of contracting COVID-19 on an aircraft is regarded as low, all passengers will be required to wear a mask at all times, while crew members will utilise masks and PPE during the flight. Onboard services will be scaled back with only water being served during the flight. Passengers who have already pre-purchased meals or meal vouchers will be refunded for their purchase.

Vistara receives first A321neo with lie-flat beds on narrow body jet, first in South Asia

Vistara has received its first Airbus A321neo, thus strengthening its commitment to expanding international operations. The aircraft - which is part of the order of 50 from the Airbus A320 Family signed in 2018 - arrived in Delhi from production facility in Hamburg, Germany. This addition makes it the first airline in South Asia to offer lie-flat beds on a narrow body aircraft and one of the few such airlines across the world. Leslie Thng, chief executive officer of Vistara said: “This new addition to our fleet reinforces our long-term commitment to international expansion plans, despite the challenges of the current times. The new cabin products on our A321neo aircraft truly complement our promise of providing a premium and world-class flying experience to travellers from and to India.” The A321neo aircraft ensures operational enhancement, cost effectiveness as well as reduction of carbon footprint while enabling extra payload capacity, greater fuel efficiency and higher range. All of these aspects perfectly align with the carrier’s international growth strategy, added Thng. Featuring Vistara’s three-class cabin configuration, the aircraft has a total of 188 seats – 12 in business class, 24 in premium economy and 152 in economy. The A321neo aircraft are powered by next generation CFM LEAP-1A engines that reduces noise footprint by nearly 50% and also emit less carbon. They are at least 20% more fuel efficient per seat than the previous generation aircraft with the new technology engines and new aerodynamics of the wings (sharklets). “In these challenging times, differentiation through efficiency, product and customer mindset is what truly matters, and we are proud to see our A321neo as an essential cornerstone in meeting Vistara’s strategic objectives for the future,” said Christian Scherer, chief commercial officer of Airbus.

Jet, set, go: AirAsia to set up a low-cost carrier in Vietnam

With Southeast Asia moving beyond backpacker paradise, emerging economies like Vietnam are opening new floodgates for travel business opportunities. From Accor to boutique hotel groups, new openings in Vietnam are not uncommon any more. In keeping with this, Asia's popular budget carrier, AirAsia has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation reaffirming its intention to set up a low-cost carrier in Vietnam with local partners. The memorandum was signed by AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes and Vietnamese businessman Tran Trong Kien, in his capacity as CEO of Thien Minh Travel Joint Stock Company (TMG) and general director of Hai Au Aviation Joint Stock Company (HAA), at the InterContinental Hanoi today. The signing, conducted on the sidelines of the Vietnam Travel and Tourism Summit 2018, was witnessed by Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister, Vu Duc Dam and Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Le Quang Tung. "AirAsia is an ASEAN airline" AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes said: “AirAsia is an ASEAN airline. And in ASEAN, Vietnam is one of the last remaining countries with a large population we’re not in. Today’s memorandum reaffirms our commitment to making AirAsia in Vietnam happen. Last year, when we announced this JV, we were bullish about Vietnam and we remain incredibly bullish about serving one of the most dynamic, fastest-growing economies in Asia. “AirAsia is already the largest foreign airline group in Vietnam by capacity. We currently operate to five destinations here, including our most recent addition, Phu Quoc. And we will continue to expand our network to connect Vietnam to ASEAN and beyond, something our local JV will be able to accelerate. We couldn’t be more excited about the prospect of bringing more visitors to this amazing country and delivering true low-cost air travel to 95 million Vietnamese in the near future.” "Vietnam as a country needs better connectivity" Tran Trong Kien said: “Vietnam tourism has performed extremely well. The number of international arrivals has doubled over the last three years and domestic and outbound travel have also grown tremendously. The sector has contributed greatly to recent economic development and social progress. Vietnam as a country needs better connectivity to continue this trend and for tourism to reach its full potential. Adding a new airline, especially at this stage and with an experienced operator like AirAsia, is a much needed and welcomed move. This new airline will bring more and better choices to our people in the years to come.” AirAsia operates 141 return flights weekly on 13 routes (including six unique routes) connecting Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nha Trang and Phu Quoc with Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Bharu in Malaysia, Bangkok and Chiang Mai in Thailand and Manila in the Philippines, and has carried 12 million passengers to and from Vietnam since entering the market in 2005.

Vietjet now second biggest carrier in Southeast Asia by market cap

Vietnam’s budget LCC, VietJet, has grown into the second biggest entity in the skies of Southeast Asia with a bigger market cap than AirAsia. On 8 November, the budget carrier began a new service between Hanoi and Kansai Airport. The new route linking Hanoi with Osaka is expected to further boost tourism and trade integration between the two countries and across the region — a big part of its growth strategy. Jeremy Goldstrich, corporate executive vice president and COO of Kansai Airports, said: “We are honoured that Kansai Airport has been chosen as Vietjet’s first destination in Japan from Hanoi and soon to be from Ho Chi Minh City. “The gateway to world famous tourist destinations” Goldstrich continued: “Hanoi is an amazing city and is also the gateway to world-famous tourist destinations such as Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh and Sapa. We hope more people from Japan and Vietnam, as well as international travellers, can enjoy travelling, touring and trading between the countries thanks to Vietjet’s joyful flights with affordable ticket fares.” In addition, the carrier’s partnership with Japan Airlines will be integral to its strategic growth plans. Back in October, Vietjet entered a codeshare agreement with JAL for domestic routes, with long-haul flights between Japan and the US planned for the future. The growth comes simultaneously with Vietnam’s GDP which grew rapidly. According to company reports, the figure grew 6.88% YoY for the quarter ended in September, while its citizens continue to travel outside the country. Furthermore, in 2017, Vietjet flew past Vietnam Airlines, leading the way in domestic traffic. The recent success has attracted stock market investors — in effect, Vietjet has surpassed its Malaysian rival, AirAsia, making it the second most valuable airline in Southeast Asia, placing under Singapore Airlines with a market cap of USD 3.6 billion.
