QantasLink to offer in-flight entertainment

QantasLink will soon offer all passengers complimentary in-flight entertainment options for the first time, as the regional carrier begins to roll out access through the new Qantas Entertainment app. From September, passengers on QantasLink services will be able to access over 2,500 hours of movies and TV shows from their own device via the Qantas Entertainment app. The app also gives customers access to thousands of titles through its streaming partner Stan. Inflight entertainment is heading beyond the black stump thanks to an upgrade of QantasLink aircraft to stream content to passengers’ digital devices. The entertainment upgrade starts with one of the regional offshoot’s Airbus A320 this week and will be extended to all the regional carrier’s jets by mid-2022. The upgrade will apply to more than 50 Boeing 717, Fokker 100, A320 and Alliance Airlines Embraer E190 aircraft. It means passengers will be able to use the Qantas Entertainment app to stream more than 2500 hours of premiere movies, TV series and audiobooks to their device. That includes exclusive TV shows and original films from streaming partner Stan. The airline already offers streaming via the app on dual-cabin 717 aircraft as well as on the Qantas 737 and A330 fleets, Passengers wanting an optimal experience need to remember to download the app from the Apple Store and Google Play prior to departure but the entertainment can also be accessed via a browser for anyone who forgets. According to Qantas Group chief customer officer Stephanie Tully, the rollout will mean inflight entertainment will be available on up to 180 Qantas and QantasLink aircraft. “Customers tell us they value being able to take time for themselves inflight to catch up on their favourite TV shows or watch movies they didn’t get to see at the cinema,” Tully said. “This investment means more of our customers will have access to inflight entertainment, particularly when travelling to smaller capital cities and regional centres. “In a normal year, our customers watch more than 20 million hours of movies and TV shows while flying with us, so we know our streaming service is incredibly popular, especially on longer domestic routes.” Tully said she expected Australia’s vaccination rollout would see demand for travel quickly return as restrictions ease.

United Airlines to add bluetooth to in-flight entertainment

As part of United Airlines' “United Next” upgrade, the company is adding oft-requested support for Bluetooth headphones. The feature is coming to 737 Max and A321neo aircraft. To start, Bluetooth support—which will connect earphones or earbuds to seatback entertainment systems—will be available on 737 Max 8 jets this summer. 737 Max 10 and Airbus A321neo aircraft arrive in early 2023. With “United Next,” the airline plans to retrofit its existing mainline, narrow-bodied fleet and purchase over 200 Max jets, for a “transformational effect on the customer experience,” United said in a press release. New 737 Max planes will include 13-inch high-definition screens in every first class seat and 10-inch HD screens in every economy seat. Each new 737 Max and A321neo will also come with what United claims is “the industry's fastest available in-flight Wi-Fi.” According to aviation writer Jason Rabinowitz, all mainline United aircrafts will have these features by 2025. "We'll deliver a better, more consistent experience, with more features for more customers, faster than ever,” said Andrew Nocella, United's EVP and Chief Commercial Officer. “While some airlines are reducing the number of economy seats with extra legroom, United will offer the most premium seats in North America, taking a different, more customer-friendly approach." According to 2020 stats from CableTV.com, Delta Airlines and JetBlue rank ahead of United on in-flight entertainment, though it tops American Airlines and Southwest, among others.

Qatar Airways is first global airline to offer fliers 100% touch-free ‘zero-touch’ in-flight entertainment technology

Qatar Airways has announced it will soon become the first global airline to offer passengers 100 percent Zero-Touch technology for its award-winning Oryx One in-flight entertainment system across the A350 fleet as part of the airline’s latest COVID-19 safety measures. The Zero-Touch technology, introduced in partnership with the Thales AVANT IFE system, will enable A350 passengers to pair their personal electronic devices (PEDs) with their seat-back IFE screen by connecting to ‘Oryxcomms’ Wi-Fi and simply scanning a QR code displayed on the screen. They can then use their PEDs to navigate and enjoy more than 4,000 options on offer through the airline’s award-winning Oryx One in-flight entertainment system, limiting the frequency of on board surface contact and providing greater peace of mind throughout the duration of their journey. The airline is also set to become the first airline in Europe and the Middle East and North Africa region to offer passengers in Business and Economy the option to pair their personal Bluetooth headphones with the on-board seatback IFE system in all cabins on the Boeing 787-9 fleet. Qatar Airways Group chief executive, Akbar Al Baker, said: “The introduction of the state-of-the-art Zero-Touch technology, and enabling passengers to use their personal Bluetooth headset on board is an important step in taking our already rigorous and stringent COVID-19 precautions to another level, limiting passenger surface contact and preventing any possible spread of infection on board. “We hope it provides yet further assurance of the safety of air travel, as well as offering passengers on board increased confidence that they are enjoying the most consistently advanced customer experience available in the sky.” The national carrier of the State of Qatar continues to rebuild its network, which currently stands at over 130 destinations. With more frequencies being added to key hubs, Qatar Airways offers unrivalled connectivity to passengers, making it easy for them to change their travel dates or destination if they need to.

Air China chooses new in-flight entertainment system

Panasonic's eX3 seat-back IFEC system Air China has chosen to equip its new fleet of Airbus A350 aircraft with Panasonic's latest in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) solution. The Beijing-based carrier has selected the eX3 IFE system for its 10 new A350s, which will start being delivered in December 2017. This will provide extensive audio and visual content for passengers, including up to 300 movies and 200 TV shows, plus games, music and a moving map. The A350s will also feature "global connectivity services". "Because the airline's route structure includes very long flights to all seven continents, it needed an IFEC solution that would help keep passengers entertained and offer new opportunities for it to generate revenue," said Hideo Nakano, CEO of Panasonic Avionics Corporation. "With eX3, Air China will offer its passengers a memorable experience that lets them watch movies and television, listen to music or connect to their favourite social media applications like WeChat." The cabin configuration of Air China's new fleet of A350 aircraft is yet to be revealed, but the long-haul jets are likely to feature business class, premium economy and economy class seats.
