Greater Bay Airlines signs MoU with HKIAA to nurture the next generation of pilots

Greater Bay Airlines (GBA) signed a Memorandum of  Understanding (MoU) with The Hong Kong International Aviation Academy (HKIAA),  aiming to provide career opportunities to the pilots-to-be and establish a talent  pipeline to the local aviation industry. Recovery of the global aviation industry is in sight, and the demand for qualified pilots  in Hong Kong and Mainland China is expected to remain strong. The HKIAA’s Flight  Training and Engineering Training Centre leverages collaboration with industry  partners to develop a series of highly effective pilot training, supporting the  sustainable development of the aviation industry in Hong Kong and the region. The MoU was signed by Liza Ng, Chief Operating Officer of GBA, and Simon Li,  President of HKIAA, witnessed by Captain Kai Chung, General Manager of Flight  Operations of GBA, and Captain Jack Ip, Director of Flight Training and Engineering of  HKIAA. Simon Li said, “The HKIAA will soon launch the Cadet Pilot Programme with an  intention to nurture local airline pilots to meet the industry’s increasing demand for  pilots. We are delighted the programme is well supported by home-based carriers.  GBA and other partner airlines will offer job interviews to the programme students.  We hope this new course will inspire aspiring talents to join the profession, further  reinforcing Hong Kong as a civil aviation hub and training centre.” Liza Ng welcomes the launch of the programme. “GBA’s network continues to  expand since we commenced scheduled service in July 2022. I believe this programme  will benefit the airline by nurturing more pilots as we are adding more destinations  and growing our fleet to meet the market demand,” she said. Under the MoU, GBA will offer preliminary interviews to the students of HKIAA’s Cadet  Pilot Programme and interviews for the post of Second Officer to the graduates. GBA commenced scheduled service in July 2022 and is currently operating flights to  Bangkok, Taipei, Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka and Ho Chi Minh City.

The event was officiated by John Lee, Chief Executive of HKSAR and Jack So, Chairman of AAHK. Pan Yundong, Deputy Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the HKSAR; Lam Sai-hung, Secretary for Transport and Logistics; Christopher Hui, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury; Tang Ping-keung, Secretary for Security; Algernon Yau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development; Prof. LO Chung-mau, Secretary for Health; Fred Lam, Chief Executive Officer of AAHK and board members of AAHK also joined the event. John Lee, Chief Executive of HKSAR said that,” The Hong Kong International Airport is consistently rated as one of the best and busiest airports anywhere. It is also an engineering marvel that continues to grow and evolve as our skyward gateway to the world. We will continue to enhance our status as an international aviation hub under the National 14th Five-Year Plan. We are committed to bringing fresh impetus to the Airport to stay ahead of the competition with other regional airports. We see that impetus emerging in the form of the Three-Runway System and SKYCITY, two mega projects that will significantly boost handling capacities and give rise to a dynamic “Airport City”.” Jack So, Chairman of AAHK said,” 25 years have seen a lot of progress in HKIA, we grew from 28 million passengers back in 1998 to 75 million just before the pandemic and for many years, we retained the position of No. 1 in air cargo. The past three years of pandemic have been difficult for Hong Kong, especially for HKIA, but we persisted in building the Three-runway System for future expansion. The new runway has been operational since November last year. Looking to the future, when all the ancillary facilities are fully open, the capacity of HKIA will be increased by 50% to cater for 120 million passengers and 10 million tonnes of cargo, sufficient to meet the demand for next 30 years. Moreover, we are making good progress in our vision to build an airport city, which will comprise aviation, tourism, trade, retail and entertainment, and will be an iconic landmark for the whole Greater Bay Area.” In addition, Mr So announced at the reception that to celebration the 25th anniversary of HKIA, free round-trip tickets from Hong Kong to multiple destinations in Asia will be given away to Hong Kong residents starting this month. AAHK purchased 500,000 tickets from home-based airlines during the pandemic in 2020 to support the industry. As the pandemic subsided, AAHK launched the “World of Winners” air ticket giveaway campaign in March and started giving away tickets to travellers in major markets around the world to boost the recovery of Hong Kong’s air traffic. Starting from 11 July, AAHK will give away a total of 80,000 tickets to Hong Kong residents through different channels of home-based airlines.

John Lee visits HKIA Logistics Park developed by AAHK in Dongguan

John Lee, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), and a group of Legislative Council (LegCo) members led by the President of the LegCo, Andrew Leung, visited the pilot scheme facility for Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) Logistics Park in Dongguan for the latest development of the intermodal cargo transshipment initiative developed by Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK). Together with Lyu Chengxi, Mayor of Dongguan, John Lee, HKSAR Chief Executive and the LegCo members were given a tour at the Bestar Logistics Centre in Dongguan, in which the pilot scheme of HKIA Logistics Park operated. During the visit, Fred Lam, Chief Executive Officer of AAHK introduced the novel sea-air intermodal cargo transshipment initiative, as well as the latest plan for permanent development, which includes the HKIA Logistics Park in Dongguan and the airside intermodal cargo pier at HKIA. Under this initiative, cargo security screening, palletisation and airline acceptance for export cargo of Greater Bay Area (GBA) can be completed upstream in Dongguan, with all procedures complying with Hong Kong’s air cargo regulations. The cargo will then be shipped by vessel to the airside of HKIA for direct uplift to overseas destinations as transshipments. Vice versa, international shipments can also be imported to Mainland China via HKIA and the logistics park. Fred Lam, Chief Executive Officer of AAHK said, “As the world’s busiest cargo airport and international cargo gateway for the GBA, HKIA is committed to enhancing its capability and efficiency of air cargo services. With the new intermodal cargo transshipment initiative, HKIA is able to extend its cargo services into the GBA. We can better serve the market with greater time efficiency and cost effectiveness as goods can be directly transshipped globally via the airside of HKIA. We will continue to work closely with government authorities and business partners to strengthen HKIA’s position as a leading regional and international air cargo hub.” The pilot scheme has been operating smoothly, and AAHK is targeting to complete the development of the permanent facilities by 2025.

HKIA passenger traffic picks up in 2022 as travel restrictions ease

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) today released the 2022 traffic figures for Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). In 2022, HKIA handled a total of 5.7 million passengers, representing a year-on-year increase of 318.4%. Nevertheless, we saw the light at the end of the tunnel when the HKSAR Government relaxed travel restrictions and quarantine requirements for inbound travellers in the second half of the year. Passenger traffic at HKIA started to pick up in the last quarter of 2022. We also have a good start of 2023 with the resumption of normal travel with the Mainland. We are confident that passenger traffic will continue to recover at HKIA.” “Despite the pandemic AAHK spares no effort in improving the airport’s facilities to prepare for the recovery of air traffic. In the past year, the Third Runway was officially commissioned, which was a significant milestone for the Three-runway System project. Sky Bridge, the 200m-long footbridge connecting Terminal 1 and T1 Satellite Concourse, opened last November to offer convenience and new experience. Facial recognition is applied to the entire departure journey. The luxury zone and boarding gate areas have been revamped to amaze passengers with new looks and facilities,” added Mr Lam. Traffic to and from Southeast Asia and Japan experienced the most significant increases. Cargo volume continued to be impacted by the global economic uncertainties, geopolitical tensions and disruptions to global supply chains. Import and export cargos decreased by 33% and 26% year-on-year respectively, compared to the same month last year. Southeast Asia, North America, and Europe recorded a similar significant decreased in terms of cargo volume in the month.
