Air India to operate daily flights to Tokyo Haneda from 15 June 2025

Air India announced the expansion of its non-stop service between Delhi and Tokyo Haneda, increasing from 4x weekly flights to daily flights, starting 15 June 2025. This enhancement strengthens connectivity between India and Japan, offering greater convenience for travellers and supporting growing trade and tourism between the two countries. This move builds on Air India’s recent shift to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (from Narita) on 31 March 2025, which reduced travel time to Tokyo Station to approximately 30 minutes. The daily flights, operated with Air India’s Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, provide passengers with faster access to central Tokyo, as Haneda Airport is just 18 km from downtown Tokyo. “Expanding our Delhi-Tokyo Haneda service to daily flights reflects Air India’s commitment to meeting the rising demand for travel between India and Japan,” said Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer, Air India. “This daily service, combined with our deepened codeshare partnership with All Nippon Airways, makes it easier for our guests to explore Japan and connect conveniently to other destinations in the country beyond Tokyo.” Through Air India’s expanded codeshare with Star Alliance partner All Nippon Airways (ANA), Air India guests can conveniently connect from Tokyo Haneda to six major Japanese cities—Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Nagoya, Okinawa, Osaka, and Sapporo—on a single ticket with baggage checked through to their final destination. The daily flights enable seamless connections to domestic Indian destinations like Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Pune, as well as international routes across Asia and Europe. The updated flight schedule, effective 15 June 2025, is as follows: AI358: Departs Delhi (DEL) at 2020 Hrs, arrives Tokyo Haneda (HND) at 0755 Hrs next day (daily). AI357: Departs Tokyo Haneda (HND) at 1150 Hrs, arrives Delhi (DEL) at 1725 Hrs (daily). Bookings for Air India’s Delhi-Tokyo Haneda flights are open on all channels, including Air India’s website, mobile app, and through travel agents.

Air India shifts operations to Tokyo Haneda and expands codeshare with ANA

Air India announced a significant upgrade to its non-stop services between Delhi and Tokyo. Beginning 31 March 2025, Air India will operate its 4x weekly flights from Delhi to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (HND), replacing its existing services to Narita International Airport (NRT), to provide passengers faster and more affordable access to central Tokyo. Complementing the shift to Tokyo Haneda, Air India also announced an expanded codeshare agreement with its Star Alliance partner, All Nippon Airways (ANA), to provide Air India guests convenient onward connections from Tokyo Haneda to 6 other major cities in Japan. This builds on Air India’s existing codeshare and interline agreements with ANA. Faster access to downtown Tokyo Air India’s strategic transition to Haneda Airport, located 18 km from downtown Tokyo, cuts travel time to Tokyo Station from nearly one hour by road (70 km from Narita) to approximately 30 minutes. This not only saves valuable time for passengers but also offers more cost-effective transportation options, enhancing the overall journey experience. “Moving our flights to Haneda Airport is a significant advantage for our guests – it brings them much closer to the centre of Tokyo. With this shift, we are not only connecting two vibrant capitals more effectively but also helping boost trade and tourism between India and Japan”, said Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer, Air India. Expanded codeshare with All Nippon Airways Subject to due regulatory approvals, beginning 01 April 2025, Air India will place its ‘AI’ designator code on ANA’s flights between Tokyo Haneda and 6 other cities in Japan: Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Nagoya, Okinawa, Osaka, and Sapporo. This will allow Air India guests to travel to any of these destinations on a single ticket, with their baggage checked through the entire journey. Reciprocally, ANA will place its ‘NH’ designator code on Air India's flight between Delhi and Tokyo Haneda, Delhi and Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Pune, enabling their customers seamless access to Air India’s robust domestic India network. Air India and ANA first signed a codeshare agreement in April last year, which allowed Air India to codeshare on ANA’s Tokyo Haneda-Delhi and Tokyo-Narita-Mumbai flights, and ANA to codeshare on Air India's Delhi-Tokyo flights. Commenting on the codeshare expansion, Nipun Aggarwal added, “Our deepened partnership with ANA opens up Japan like never before for our guests. By providing easy access for our guests to ANA’s domestic Japan network, combined with ANA’s reach into Air India’s extensive Indian network, we’re creating a stronger bridge between our two nations—making travel simpler and truly rewarding for our common guests.” “To promote increased exchange between Japan and India, ANA is expanding its codeshare partnership with Star Alliance partner Air India to enhance its network,” said ANA’s Executive Vice President of Alliances and International Affairs, Katsuya Goto. “This expansion, with a focus on the increased codeshare options from Delhi to six destinations within India, will provide customers with more opportunities and seamless connections, delivering a satisfying experience for premium customers in particular. This is a significant step in our ongoing efforts to provide a superior travel experience for customers flying between Japan and India.” Passengers of both airlines flying on codeshare flights will enjoy premium services such as lounge access and priority boarding that Star Alliance offers to its premium members. Growing tourism to Japan According to Japan National Tourism Organization, 233,000 Indians visited Japan between January and December 2024, a 40% increase from the previous year, underscoring Japan’s growing appeal as a travel destination for Indian tourists. Schedule of Air India flights between Delhi and Tokyo Haneda AI358: Departs Delhi (DEL) at 2020 Hrs, arrives next day at Tokyo Haneda (HND) at 0755 Hrs - operates Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays AI357: Departs Tokyo Haneda (HND) at 11:50, arrives at Delhi (DEL) at 17:25 – operates Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Sundays Air India’s Delhi-Tokyo Haneda flights will continue to be operated with Air India’s Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, featuring 18 Business Class flatbeds and 238 spacious Economy seats. The flights enable travellers to take seamless connections to/from several domestic Indian destinations as well as international routes across Asia and Europe. Bookings for Air India’s Delhi-Tokyo Haneda flights are open on all channels, including Air India’s website, mobile app, and through travel agents. The codeshare flights will be opened for bookings progressively.

Qantas to Shake Up Japan Travel with New Haneda Flights

In a significant move set to transform travel between Australia and Japan, Qantas has announced plans to shift its Melbourne and Brisbane flights from Tokyo Narita Airport to Tokyo Haneda Airport by early 2025. This change comes on the heels of the International Air Services Commission (IASC) granting Qantas an additional daily flight slot to Haneda, effective from 25 February 2025, for five years. New Opportunities for Travelers The new slot allows Qantas to introduce a third daily service between Australia and Haneda, which is conveniently located on the outskirts of downtown Tokyo, unlike Narita, which is over 60 kilometres from the city centre. Currently, Qantas operates two daily flights from Sydney to Haneda and one daily from Melbourne and Brisbane to Narita. With the new slot, Qantas plans to operate one flight each from Brisbane and Melbourne to Haneda and swap one of its Sydney flights to Narita, ensuring coverage of both airports from Sydney. Awaiting Final Approvals While the IASC determination is a significant step forward, Qantas still needs to secure the necessary slots at Haneda. The airline is optimistic, however, and plans to put these new flights on sale by the end of the year, aiming to meet the growing demand for travel to Japan. Expanding Fleet and Services Qantas applied for the additional slot on 16 September 2024 to start the new services on 30 March 2025. The airline plans to use its Airbus A330 aircraft, which can accommodate 297 passengers, for these routes. The capacity must be fully utilised by 30 April 2025 and can be shared with Qantas subsidiaries, including the low-cost carrier Jetstar. Currently, Jetstar operates daily flights from Brisbane and Cairns to Narita and 11 weekly flights from Sydney, Brisbane, and Cairns to Osaka. A Word from Qantas International CEO Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace expressed his satisfaction with the IASC’s decision: “With this third frequency, we plan to be the only airline to connect Australia’s three major east coast cities with Haneda Airport – right in the heart of downtown Tokyo. Japan is an incredibly popular destination for Australians, and we see strong demand for our services. These new flights will make it easier for Qantas customers to get to Tokyo.” Looking Ahead As Qantas awaits final slot approvals, the airline’s plans to enhance connectivity between Australia and Japan are underway. This strategic move caters to the increasing demand for travel to Japan and positions Qantas as a key player in the Australia-Japan travel market. Keep an eye out for these new flights, which are expected to go on sale towards the end of the year, offering more convenience and options for travellers heading to Tokyo.

United Airlines Plans First Nonstop Houston-Tokyo-Haneda Flight

United Airlines announced that it has applied to the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) for daily nonstop flights between Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport and Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. United will be the first U.S. carrier to offer nonstop service between Houston and Haneda if approved. This new route will serve the rapidly growing Houston region’s population, 240+ Japanese-affiliated companies, and customers residing in areas across the Southern United States. The flights will connect 64 cities in the Southern United States to Haneda, accounting for about 575,000 annual Tokyo bookings, or 21% of total U.S. mainland – Tokyo demand. While Houston has only one international airline flight to Haneda, New York/Newark has five, Los Angeles has seven, Chicago has three, and Washington, D.C. and Dallas/Fort Worth have two. This new route will increase market parity while providing needed seats and flexibility to business and leisure travellers. “Between its steadily growing population and booming energy and innovation sectors, the Houston area has transformed into a critical hub for business and leisure travel,” said Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances at United Airlines. “If awarded by the DOT, this new service will enhance travel options to Tokyo Haneda for consumers across the Southern United States and strengthen the economic partnership between Japan and more than 240 affiliated businesses in the greater Houston area.” United has worked diligently to develop a Japanese network to promote competition and provide affordable and consistent service options for U.S. travellers while operating the world’s largest route network of any U.S. airline. United’s Tokyo service now comprises several flights from the airline’s seven U.S. hubs to Haneda and Narita airports. United is Houston’s largest airline, with over 14,000 employees, over 400 daily departures, and over 70 international daily departures. According to a new Compass Lexecon study, United’s Huston hub and foreign visitor spending on United and Star Alliance member flights support an estimated $5.3 billion in gross domestic product in Texas each year, and United’s direct employment in Houston contributed $1.2 billion to economic activity in 2022. Houston is a significant commercial hub for health care, manufacturing, and, most notably, the energy sector. Houston and the state of Texas have built significant economic ties with Japan due to their status as an energy powerhouse. The U.S. Department of Energy recently chose Houston as one of seven regional clean hydrogen hubs in collaboration with Japanese company Mitsubishi Power Americas. Approximately 70,000 people are employed by Japanese-owned businesses in Texas, including around 240 Japanese-affiliated enterprises in Houston. Furthermore, Texas is home to 53 Fortune 500 companies, 24 of which are in Houston. According to the Texas Development Corporation, Japanese firms have reported 119 investment projects in Texas over the past ten years, totalling $6.9 billion in capital investment and 19,620 jobs created. On the other hand, Texas companies reported 25 investment projects in Japan, totalling $799 million in capital investment and 1,667 new jobs. Houston’s relationship with Japan extends beyond economic ties; the country’s regional Consulate-General is also located in Houston.
