Dubai Airports enhances autism services and training

Dubai Airports has expanded its autism-inclusive training programme, equipping 45,000 employees - across the wider airport community, including partners and stakeholders - to better assist autistic and sensory-sensitive travellers navigating Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International (DWC). The initiative aligns with Dubai's broader ambition of becoming a Certified Autism Destination™ (CAD). DXB is the world's first international airport to earn the Certified Autism Centre™ (CAC) designation, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) and is also Autism-Certified by the Dubai Autism Centre (DAC). The expanded training programme is part of Dubai Airports’ wider strategy to ensure a supportive airport experience for guests with specific needs. Highlighting that genuine accessibility begins with human understanding, not just infrastructure, Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Airports said: "True inclusion starts with people. By investing and increasing specialist training by 36% year-on-year, we are embedding a culture of understanding and proactive support across our airports. DXB and DWC are more than airports – they are Dubai’s gateway to the world, shaping the first and last impressions of our city for millions of residents and visitors. With this comes a responsibility: to ensure that every guest, regardless of their individual needs, feels supported and included.” The comprehensive, IBCCES-accredited training has been rolled out across the two airports.  Frontline teams from Dubai Airports and key partners including Dubai Police, the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs, Dubai Customs, dnata, Dubai Duty Free, Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services, and Dubai Taxi Company, Emirates, flydubai, in addition to other airlines and concessionaires operating from DXB have integrated the training into their operations, to create a consistent, supportive environment throughout the travel experience. Employees are taught sensory awareness, effective communication, and techniques to reduce anxiety to enable them to better support and connect with neurodiverse individuals. Trained Dubai Airports’ Guest Experience Ambassadors, identifiable by Sunflower pins, are positioned at key touchpoints throughout DXB and DWC to provide specialised assistance and informed support to autistic guests and their families. Throughout Autism Acceptance Month, DXB’s Smart Gates operated by the General Directorate of Identity and Foreign Affairs (GDIFA), are illuminated in blue in solidarity with the autism community. Sunflowers, an international marque for hidden disabilities, are also displayed across DXB terminals to promote awareness. DXB continues to enhance accessibility while nurturing meaningful human connection. By equipping frontline teams with autism-inclusive training and embedding understanding across every touchpoint, Dubai Airports ensures guests feel seen, supported, and respected—not just assisted. Services include the DXB Travel Planner, an online visual guide that helps guests and families prepare for their journey in advance and the Sunflower Lanyard, a discreet identifier for hidden disabilities that provides access to priority lanes and an autism-friendly route through check-in, passport control, security checkpoints, and boarding. Other key offerings include complimentary two-hour parking, dedicated taxis, and wheelchair services, along with the Assisted Travel Lounge in Terminal 2, a quiet, sensory-friendly space – all part of DXB’s commitment to making travel accessible to everyone. Through its "We All Meet the World Differently" initiative, Dubai Airports continues to drive awareness of neurodiversity, working with the Community Development Authority, autism organisations, schools, and advocacy groups.

Face masks no longer mandatory at Dubai airports

The wearing of face masks will no longer be mandatory at Dubai airports following the relaxation of COVID-19 safety norms from September 29. The decision comes in the context of Emirates and Flydubai confirming that passengers do not need to wear masks on flights to Dubai. Passengers at the Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC) do not have to wear face masks anymore, Dubai Airports has confirmed in an emailed statement on Wednesday. “It is not mandatory for passengers to wear face masks at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC) effective Wednesday, September 28, 2022,” a statement from the airport operator read. Note that the mandatory wearing of a mask, if necessary, on board aircraft will be determined based on the specific requirements and rules applied by the final destination or transit. On September 26, the UAE announced the easing of the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic, by declaring that it is not mandatory to wear masks in closed places, and limiting them to medical facilities, hospitals, mosques, places of worship and public transportation. The UAE eased the norms after a significant drop in COVID-19 positive cases.

Dubai Airport gears up to handle 1.9 million travellers

Dubai International (DXB) is gearing up to welcome some 1.9 million travellers, who are anticipated to pass through DXB between April 29 to May 9 with average daily traffic exceeding 177,000 passengers. May 7 is expected to be the busiest day with passenger numbers surpassing the 200,000 mark. Dubai Airports is working with airlines, control authorities, and commercial and service partners to ensure a smooth and comfortable experience for all customers. Those travelling during this peak period can make their journey smooth and comfortable by following a few simple tips. •    Be aware of the latest travel regulations for the destination you are travelling to. They urge passengers to get in touch with their respective airlines and ensure that they have all the necessary documents with the required validity before reaching the airport. •    Travellers over the age of 12 can use Smart Gates to speed up the passport control process. •    If you are flying out of Terminal 1, arrive at the airport no earlier than 3 hours before your departure. Use online check in wherever available to save time. •    Those travelling from Terminal 3 can use Emirate's convenient early check-in and self-service check-in facilities. •    The roads to the airport could get busy during peak times. It’s best to plan some extra time to get to and through the airport. •    Family and well-wishers can say their goodbyes at home as entry to the departure zone is restricted to ticketed passengers during busy hours throughout peak periods. •    Once at the airport, travellers can enjoy DXB’s a full range of facilities including restaurants, duty free shopping and lounges to relax before their flight.

Dubai Airports predicts year’s busiest travel period

Dubai Airports is gearing up for what is expected to be one of the busiest travel periods of the year so far at the world’s busiest international airport, Dubai International (DXB), this weekend. The number of passengers travelling through DXB is expected to increase between March 25 and 28, and again between April 7 and 9 as schools close for their spring holidays. Essa Al Shamsi, Vice President of Terminal Operations at Dubai Airports, shared some advice for travellers: "During this busy period there are a number of steps travellers can take to ensure their journey through DXB is smooth and easy. To avoid congestion on the road in and out of the airport, we recommend using the Dubai Metro. There are metro stations at both Terminals 1 and 3, and operating hours have been extended to cater for the key arrival and departure times during the peak periods." "For travellers over the age of 12, we recommend they use Smart Gates to speed up the passport control process at departure and arrival. For those travelling from Terminal 3 with Emirates, we suggest making use of their convenient early and self-service check-in facilities for a smooth start to their vacation," he added. Considering that access to the arrivals forecourt in Terminal 3 is limited to public transport and other authorised vehicles only, friends and families are advised to use the airport’s designated car parks or valet service to receive their guests in comfort, Dubai Airports said.

This is how India is still leading Dubai Airport’s passenger traffic recovery

India continued to be Dubai International Airport's top destination country by traffic volume in the first half of 2021 with passenger numbers exceeding 1.9 million (19 lakh), despite travel restrictions due to Covid-19 affecting its key source markets. The world’s busiest airport for international travel clocked 10.6 million passengers in the first six months of 2021, Dubai Airports said on Wednesday.as it projected robust growth for Dubai International (DXB) in the second half of the year. “In anticipation of the robust recovery of global air travel, we started the second half on a high note by re-opening Terminal 1 and Concourse D - the home terminal for our 60 international carriers - after 15 months of hibernation to accommodate the seasonal rush of travellers over the summer holidays,” said Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports. “This was essential to facilitate the continued expansion of the route networks of our home base carriers Emirates and flydubai, whose joint network - currently spanning 168 destinations - continues to grow,” Griffiths said. India continued to be the Dubai airport's top destination country by traffic volume in the first half with passenger numbers exceeding 1.9 million, followed by Pakistan with 700,074 customers, Russia with 406,209, and Egypt (401,361), Dubai Airports said in a release. Other destination countries of note include Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and the US. The top three cities by traffic were Addis Ababa (354,804), followed by Cairo (345,886) and Moscow (344,175). “We have already witnessed some of our busiest weekends of the year in July, and with major international events such as the Dubai Expo 2020 and Dubai Airshow 2021 lined up for the months ahead, the outlook for 2021 in terms of passenger numbers looks very promising,” Griffiths said.
