Austrian Airlines expands long-haul network with inaugural flight to Boston
Austrian Airlines took off for Boston for the first time, launching the year round nonstop flight connection from Vienna to Boston. Austria's home carrier will fly to the US metropolis on the East Coast up to six times a week. The flight will be operated with a Boeing 767, which has 211 seats. Before the passengers took off on board the Boeing 767 to Boston, they were welcomed at the gate by Austrian Airlines CCO Michael Trestl and Julian Jäger, Joint CEO and COO of Vienna Airport, and introduced to the new destination. In addition to the traditional ribbon cutting ceremony, guests enjoyed culinary delights and a quick sketch artist who artistically captured the moment of their inaugural flight. Goodies were handed out by Austrian Airlines CCO Michael Trestl on board the inaugural flight. Michael Trestl, Chief Commercial Officer of Austrian Airlines, is enthusiastic about the strategic route expansion: "We are delighted to add an extremely attractive destination to our Austrian Airlines destination portfolio with Boston. By expanding our long-haul network, we are offering our passengers a diverse travel program, increasing our presence in the international market and strengthening our hub in Vienna." He continues: “Boston is a fascinating destination for leisure and business travelers with its renowned educational institutions, including Harvard and MIT, its business affiliations and the incomparable charm of the city. It will also make it even easier for visitors from the USA to travel to Vienna in the future." The travel time between Vienna and Boston, some 6,500 kilometres away, is approximately 9 hours. The flight will be operated on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays as well as every second Tuesday. Julian Jäger, Joint CEO and COO of Vienna Airport, is pleased about the successful cooperation between Austrian Airlines and Vienna Airport and emphasizes: "The USA is the most important long haul market for Vienna Airport. With the new direct connection to Boston, our home carrier Austrian Airlines is expanding its North America offering. Boston, one of the oldest cities in the USA, offers numerous cultural and historical highlights. The modernization and expansion of the Austrian Airlines long-haul fleet to eleven Boeing 787 Dreamliners increases the attractiveness of North American travel and gives Vienna's economy and tourism an important boost at the beginning of summer." Norbert Kettner, Managing Director of Vienna Tourist Board, is also delighted about the strengthened connection to the USA: “As a medium-sized capital of a small country, Vienna can succeed in tourism and overall economically only through its connection to international transport routes. In 2024, Vienna will continue to be a globally connected city – the new Boston flight of our strategic partner Austrian Airlines provides a strong boost for both leisure tourism and the conference sector. Vienna's tourism is once again as international as it was before the pandemic. The USA, which is Vienna's most important long-distance market and was already above its pre-pandemic level in 2023, played a major role in this." Lufthansa: New A380 Superjumbo Flights to Boston and New York
by: Harry Johnson | Beginning on 1 June 2023, Lufthansa will resume its regular flight operations with the popular Airbus A380 after a three-year interruption. Daily flights from Munich to Boston will be operated under the flight number LH424. Just in time for Independence Day, the U.S. national holiday on 4 July, an A380 with the flight number LH410 will start taking off daily, heading for New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). Lufthansa is thus noticeably expanding its premium offering at its southern hub, especially with additional seats in Business and First Class. With 509 seats, the A380 has around 80 percent more capacity than the Airbus A340-600 currently flying on the Munich-New York (JFK) route. In total, the A380 offers four classes of travel: 8 seats in First Class, 78 seats in Business Class, 52 seats in Premium Economy and 371 seats in Economy Class. Flights on the largest aircraft in the Lufthansa fleet can be booked as of 23 March 2023. Due to the significant increase in demand for airline tickets and the delayed delivery of ordered aircraft, Lufthansa had decided in 2022 to reactivate the Airbus A380, which is particularly popular with passengers and crews. By the end of 2023, a total of four A380 aircraft will again be stationed in Munich. The Airbus A380 is a large wide-body airliner that was developed and produced by Airbus. It is the world’s largest passenger airliner and only full-length double-deck jet airliner. Deutsche Lufthansa AG, commonly shortened to Lufthansa, is the flag carrier of Germany. When combined with its subsidiaries, it is the second-largest airline in Europe in terms of passengers carried. Lufthansa is one of the five founding members of Star Alliance, the world’s largest airline alliance, formed in 1997.
