Beijing Airport Drops COVID-19 Test Requirement

Beijing Capital International Airport, the busiest airport in China, no longer needs visitors to show a clean COVID-19 test result to board the plane, according to Reuters, citing Beijing News, a publication run by the Chinese Communist Party. On December 6, 2022, the requirement was removed. No guidance was provided on whether departing travellers from Beijing airport may also depart without a COVID-19 test result. After the pandemic, China’s entry standards remained among the tightest in the world, and the nation continues to follow the zero-COVID policy. Due to China’s stringent regulations, the 2022 IATA annual conference, which was initially scheduled for June 2022 in Shanghai, was relocated to Qatar. After residents voiced their dissatisfaction with China’s stringent COVID-19 restrictions, Beijing’s admission requirements were loosened. After Chinese President Xi Jinping insisted that the nation will uphold its zero-COVID policy, citizens of the southern city of Guangzhou protested the government in November 2022.

Future of travel: How the pandemic has transformed Beijing airport

A new completely contactless experience for passengers travelling through Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) should make air travel safer. SITA, a technology provider for the air transport industry, announced what it called its most extensive biometric deployment to date that focuses on the busiest airport in China and the second busiest in the world. BCIA has completely automated the entire passenger journey using SITA technology – from check-in and bag drop through to immigration, security, and finally boarding. Passengers only need to enrol once during check-in, then experience a seamless journey through the airport enabled by facial recognition. Improved processing efficiency means shorter queuing time and more social distancing for all passengers. An added benefit during the COVID-19 era is that the process removes the need to touch any airport equipment, reducing the risk of infection. SITA Smart Path has already proven that it can significantly speed up passenger processing at BCIA, processing over 400 passengers boarding an Airbus A380 in less than 20 minutes. The SITA Smart Path solution is the largest rollout of its kind and enables passengers to glide through the airport using only facial recognition as their boarding pass, eliminating the need for physical touchpoints and minimising the risk of COVID-19 infection for passengers. The deployment included the implementation of over 600 biometric checkpoints through the airport including 250 lanes of automatic gates, 80 kiosks, and 30 self-bag drop stations which will process passengers from international flights. The biometric technology is currently activated across multiple checkpoints at BCIA, including manual check-in, self-service check-in, bag drop, restricted access, security, and boarding. From an airport efficiency view, the solutions have improved capacity and created a low-touch (paperless) environment for all while allowing staff to focus on passengers who need help with their travel. As China emerges from the Covid-19 pandemic, a growing number of passengers are returning to the skies. To sustain the industry recovery, airlines, airports, ground handlers and others in the industry must prioritise passenger safety, convenience and confidence. BCIA is the largest airport in China, with passenger volume exceeding 100 million between 2018 and 2020. It is positioned as the international hub airport in the overall design of the Jing-Jin-Ji airports group. To date, it serves 31 domestic airlines and 62 foreign airlines, with 133 international routes, and 161 domestic routes.

China Eastern unveils 5G travel system at Beijing airport

China Eastern Airlines, China Unicom Beijing and Huawei have joined forces to launch a 5G smart travel service system at the new Beijing Daxing International Airport. 5G enabled services, such as facial recognition for check-in and security, personalised airport experience through the airline’s smart app and paperless luggage services, are part of the first wave of the new 5G enabled smart air travel services aimed at improving passenger experience at airports. The 5G coverage across the airport terminals is achieved with Huawei’s digital indoor system 5G LampSite, which was deployed for China Unicom Beijing in August 2019. Passengers can now complete all travel transactions from ticket purchase to check-in, luggage consignment, security check and boarding just by having their faces scanned. With ultra-secure storage of passenger data, and the deletion of it upon confirmation of boarding the plane, the airline prioritises the safety and security of their customer’s data, giving them the confidence to fully engage with the new smart services. The carrier has launched its 5G luggage tracking services on top of its permanent luggage RFID tagging solution. With durable and reusable passive RFID luggage cards, passengers that need check-in luggage can put the luggage cards close to their mobile phones to quickly log in their flight numbers and luggage destinations and then perform an activation to complete luggage delivery without needing paper receipts. Following the pilot operation at Beijing Daxing International Airport, the carrier will expand the smart travel service system to airports in Beijing, Shanghai, and other major cities in China.

New flights to Guangzhou and Xian – seven routes available between China and Budapest Airport from August

Representative Image, Image by prostooleh on Freepik   Budapest Airport welcomed two new Chinese flights in the last week of June, with the launch of direct Guangzhou-Budapest and Xi’an-Budapest flights. Together with the Budapest-Shenzhen route, which will join the new additions in August, a total of seven direct passenger flights will be available between Budapest and China. With this, Ferenc Liszt International Airport offers the most extensive route network to the Far Eastern country in East-Central Europe, providing a significant economic advantage for Hungary. Passengers will also benefit from the new services, which will open the way to the rest of Asia, as well as to New Zealand and Australia. In addition to Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing and Ningbo, direct flights are now available from Budapest to Guangzhou and Xi’an, with Shenzhen joining in early August, bringing the number of flights between the Asian country and Hungary to twenty a week. Thanks to China Southern, Guangzhou, one of China’s most important economic hubs, has become accessible with direct flights. Guangdong Province, where the city is located, generates 10% of the country’s GDP, so the connection is also of key importance for the Hungarian economy. The Pearl River Delta - Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzhen and the Guangzhou area - is the world’s largest R&D hub for information technology and renewable energy. The metropolis of more than 15 million inhabitants is home to major investors in Hungary, such as BYD, Huawei, ZTE, Sunwoda and Eve Energy. With a population of around 13 million, the 3,000-year-old Xi’an is the capital and largest city of Shaanxi Province. Located about 900 kilometers southwest of Beijing, it is an important industrial and financial hub and a major tourist attraction. It is home to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time, the 8,000 clay soldiers guarding the tomb of the first Chinese emperor, and to the best-preserved city wall in China, 11 kilometers long, with a 13-storey pagoda built on top. The flight is operated by Shanghai Airlines and China Eastern. The new destinations will serve as important hubs for passengers departing from Budapest for onward travel within China and Asia, while the flights to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou offer convenient connections to Australia and New Zealand. “The two new flights launched this week further strengthen Sino-Hungarian aviation relations, which will benefit both passengers and the Hungarian economy,” said Francois Berisot, CEO, Budapest Airport. He added: “Budapest Airport has developed an extensive route network of major cities in China in recent years that is outstanding even at regional level. The airport has become a regional hub for leisure and business passengers traveling between the two countries, as well as for cargo shipments from the East within Central and Eastern Europe. Budapest Airport is currently negotiating the launch of more new flights to China, further strengthening the economic ties and booming tourism between the two countries.” With the addition of the Shenzhen-Budapest route operated by Hainan Airlines, which will start in early August, this will mean 20 direct flights per week between Hungary and China. This is a significant increase compared to the magnitude seen before the coronavirus pandemic. In 2019, the busiest year ever for the airport, 220,000 passengers flew from China to Hungary. The current network expansion will allow this number to rise to more than 400,000. In addition to belly cargo, goods transported on the lower decks of aircraft, the number of dedicated cargo flights on this route has also increased significantly in recent years, making Budapest Airport a strategic hub for cargo from China. Budapest Airport has cooperated actively with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Hungarian Tourism Agency in connection with the launch of the flights.
