Rex Adds to Launch Perth-Adelaide Flights

Rex Airlines, a rising star in Australia’s domestic aviation sector, has announced a significant expansion with the launch of thrice-weekly flights between Adelaide and Perth. This strategic move comes just three years after Rex’s entry into the domestic market and closely follows the introduction of their Melbourne-Perth service. Starting from as low as $249 for a one-way economy fare, Rex will operate the new route using Embraer E-190 jets through its group member, National Jet Express (NJE). With headquarters in Perth and hubs across the country, including Adelaide and Brisbane, NJE is renowned as one of Australia’s top charter operators and a key component of the Rex Group. Anthony Gibara, NJE Director, expressed his enthusiasm for the new service, which is now available for bookings for travel commencing on 28 June 2024. “This is terrific news for Perth and Adelaide travellers,” said Mr Gibara. “More operators mean more competition, and with Rex, it translates to better service and reliability.” The announcement comes as competitors Virgin and Qantas have faced challenges on this route, with almost 85 cancelled flights in the first four months of 2024 alone. Rex promises to offer a more dependable alternative and plans to increase service frequency once established. The new route marks the 12th domestic service for the Rex Group, which already connects major cities and popular destinations across Australia. The NJE Embraer E-190 jets, seating over 100 passengers, will be ticketed as Rex flights, further solidifying the airline’s domestic footprint. South Australia’s Minister for Tourism, Zoe Bettison, welcomed the new service, highlighting its potential to attract more visitors from Western Australia, the state’s fourth-largest interstate market. “The commencement of an extra three flights a week from Perth to Adelaide is timed perfectly to coincide with the start of WA school holidays,” Ms Bettison remarked. Western Australia’s Deputy Premier, Rita Saffioti, echoed the sentiment, noting the benefits for tourism and the warm reception expected from the industry. Adelaide Airport’s Managing Director, Brenton Cox, and Perth Airport’s Chief Commercial and Aviation Officer, Kate Holsgrove, praised Rex’s commitment to the market and its growth in the domestic sector. With the new service set to begin just before the July school holidays, Rex is poised to fill a capacity gap and stimulate traffic volumes on this crucial route. The airline’s focus on providing value, including checked baggage and refreshments, positions it as a strong contender in the market. As Rex Airlines spreads its wings with the new Adelaide-Perth flights, the skies over Australia are set to witness a new era of connectivity and choice for travellers. With tickets now on sale, the airline invites passengers to embark on a journey that promises reliability and comfort.

The reinstated service will facilitate the growing travel demand to and from South Australia and allow passengers to travel conveniently between more than 140 destinations across Emirates’ global network, offering a wide range of choice, flexibility, and connectivity.   Emirates first launched its Adelaide services in 2012 and carried more than 165,000 passengers between Dubai and Adelaide in 2019. By 1 December, when Emirates also reinstates its second daily service to Perth, the airline will offer 77 weekly flights from Australia with the ability to transport 68,000 passengers per week to and from Australia, returning to its pre-pandemic capacity. Emirates’ return is a major milestone for South Australia’s pandemic recovery. The tourism expenditure of daily direct non-stop Emirates’ flights is estimated by South Australian Tourism Commission to generate more than $62 million per year and create in excess of 315 full-time equivalent tourism-related jobs for South Australians. Each flight will also offer 14 tonnes of cargo space, totalling 196 tonnes weekly between Dubai and Adelaide. The value of freight exports is estimated to be $98 million per year, bringing the total estimated expenditure generated by Emirates’ flights to Adelaide to $160 million. South Australia Premier, Peter Malinauskas, says, “Reinstating Emirates flights to Adelaide has been a key priority for the State Government. Emirates once again flying daily direct into Adelaide will further drive South Australia’s economic growth – set to deliver an estimated $160 million in tourism expenditure and freight exports and create more than 315 full-time tourism-related jobs for South Australians. “The Emirates service has been very much missed by South Australians – recommencing daily flights will make Adelaide easier to reach from key long-haul markets and make doing business with our state easier.” South Australian Minister for Tourism, Zoe Bettison, says, “This is a major recovery milestone for our state’s tourism industry, providing a crucial link into South Australia’s traditionally strong European markets, as well as the UK, Middle East, India, and the east coast of the US. “The reinstatement of direct daily Emirates flights into Adelaide is expected to generate more than $62 million in tourism expenditure alone – a major boost to our state’s visitor economy. “It is exciting that South Australia will once again feature in Emirates’ global marketing programs, getting more eyes around the world on SA and helping drive an increase in visitors to our state.” Barry Brown, Divisional Vice President Australasia at Emirates, says, “The return of Emirates to Adelaide has been highly anticipated by passengers and industry for some time. We’re already looking ahead to welcoming our first passengers from Adelaide on board in October.” Adelaide Airport Managing Director, Brenton Cox, says, “This is great news for our customers who will once again benefit from Emirates’ extensive global network via Dubai. It offers greater competition and choice for travellers, including through Emirates’ code-sharing arrangement with Qantas, connecting through the Middle East to Europe and Africa. Equally it creates significant tourism and wider economic opportunities in attracting international visitors to Adelaide. “We’re delighted that Emirates will immediately return to daily services – the same as pre-COVID frequencies - which is a real sign of confidence in the Adelaide market. The widebody Boeing 777-200LR aircraft also creates improved air freight export opportunities for our local producers to Middle Eastern and European markets.” Fly Better with Emirates from Adelaide Operating daily on the Boeing 777-200LR aircraft with 38 Business Class seats alongside 264 seats in Economy Class, the Adelaide service will offer 302 seats per flight and over 4,200 weekly seats between Dubai and Adelaide. By adding Adelaide and Perth, Vietjet has more than doubled the number of weekly flights it operates to Australia to 58—less than a year after entering the Australian market in April 2023.  VietJet now operates flights to Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney, five of Australia’s most important urban centres. Airport officials in Perth and Adelaide, Rita Saffiotti, the Deputy Premier of Western Australia, and Zoe Bettison, the Minister of Tourism in South Australia, have all praised VietJet for establishing these new routes. With the addition of these two new routes, VietJet now operates 58 weekly flights between Vietnam and Australia’s five main cities (Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide). “VietJet provides affordable air travel focusing strongly on customer service, and we are delighted to welcome the airline to Perth Airport; we look forward to building on the relationship to deliver a great new holiday destination in Vietnam for Western Australians,” said Scott Woodward, COO of Perth Airport. Perth, the capital of Western Australia, is the country’s fourth-largest city. It has a mild temperature all year, a thriving economy, and a rich cultural landscape. Meanwhile, Adelaide is the country’s fifth-biggest city. It offers a diversified landscape from the coast to the hills. Adelaide is famed for its various festivals and sporting events, cuisine and wine, bustling beaches, and large manufacturing districts. Vietnam is South Australia’s 12th largest export destination, with exports to Vietnam increasing by 32 per cent in the 12 months to September 2023, growing to almost half a billion dollars a year. The service will offer South Australia increased accessibility to valuable tourism markets, helping grow the state’s visitor economy, which is currently worth $9.9 billion. South Australian tourism minister Zoe Bettison said, “It is terrific to have VietJet now flying into Adelaide, the first Vietnamese airline to include our city as a regular destination – opening up significant opportunities for South Australia.” “Greater access to key tourism and trade markets in Asia is hugely valuable, with tourism in the Asian region currently worth $602 million to our state and exports to Vietnam now worth almost half a billion dollars a year,” Bettison added. With five weekly return flights, the new VietJet routes will connect Vietnam’s most dynamic and populous city with these two large cities in Australia. Through VietJet’s extensive flight network, Australia will be linked to India, Southeast Asia, East Asia, and beyond. Western Australian and South Australian communities and government officials have welcomed VietJet’s new routes with open arms. The aircraft used for these flights are state-of-the-art and eco-friendly, flown by experienced pilots. Passengers travelling to Vietnam may enjoy delicious, hot, organic meals showcasing global cuisine. When buying a ticket online, guests may take advantage of Vietjet’s “Fly Now – Pay Later” programme, which offers convenient and quick payment plans. With this programme, Vietjet helps passengers “overcome financial burdens,” especially in challenging economic times, allowing them to return to their hometown for reunions, travel, visit relatives, and enjoy festivals, Lunar New Year, and the arrival of spring.
