South Australians are preparing for an aviation milestone, as United Airlines announces the first-ever direct flight from Adelaide to North America. From 11 December 2025, travellers will be able to fly non-stop to San Francisco, marking a historic connection between South Australia and the United States. This new 15-hour flight opens up countless opportunities for both leisure and business travel, while showcasing the growing prominence of Adelaide as a gateway city. A Seamless Connection Across Continents The seasonal service will operate three times a week—on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays—using United Airlines’ cutting-edge Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. This aircraft, featuring 257 seats, includes the comfort of 48 Polaris Business Class and 21 Premium Plus seats, ensuring an elevated travel experience for passengers. Adelaide departures are scheduled for 2:55 pm, with arrivals in San Francisco the same day. Return flights will arrive in Adelaide at 9:30 am, making for convenient travel both ways. Travellers departing from Adelaide can also take advantage of one-stop connections to more than 75 US destinations, from iconic cities like New York and Las Vegas to cultural hubs like Chicago and Seattle. Even Perth passengers, who currently lack direct access to the US, can seamlessly connect through this route, further enhancing accessibility for Western Australia. United’s Commitment to Australia With the addition of Adelaide to its network, United Airlines becomes the only carrier offering direct flights between the US and four major Australian cities—Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and now Adelaide. This strategic expansion, adding almost 25,000 seats annually between Australia and the US, underscores United’s dedication to providing unmatched connectivity. United Airlines Managing Director for APAC Airport Operations, Sam Shinohara, highlighted the significance of this new service: “Direct flights are a big factor in people deciding where to travel. This game-changing flight makes United the only airline to offer nonstop service to four major Australian cities, enhancing travel options for more Australians than ever before.” Boosting South Australia’s Tourism Industry SA Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison celebrated the announcement as a historic collaboration that will have transformative benefits for South Australia. “South Australia has been named one of the most welcoming regions on the planet by Booking.com, and this route reflects the growing appeal of our state. It’s a wonderful coincidence that Napa Valley lies one hour north of San Francisco, just as the Barossa is one hour north of Adelaide—creating exciting opportunities for wine tourism and cultural exchange.” Adelaide Airport Ltd Managing Director Brenton Cox echoed the excitement, emphasising the potential for long-term success: “We intend to make this service a great success and build this towards a year-round route in the future.” A New Horizon United Airlines’ Adelaide-San Francisco route is a breakthrough moment for aviation in South Australia. This direct connection not only links two vibrant regions but also fosters closer ties between Australia and the United States. From seamless travel options to unparalleled experiences, this milestone redefines international connectivity for Australians, while bringing global travellers closer to South Australia’s unique charm. As this partnership takes flight, the future of travel in the Top End has never looked brighter. In June 2019, TAP doubled its US destination offering, launching flights to Chicago, San Francisco and Washington D.C. from its Lisbon hub. The first of the three new routes took to the skies on 1 June 2019, with the inaugural flight to Chicago departing Lisbon at 1:05pm local time, operated by the airline’s wide-bodied Airbus A330 aircraft. The stunning city of San Francisco swiftly followed on 10 June 2019, with the flag carrier’s A330neo enabling customers to reach ‘the Golden City’ in just under 12 hours. Flights to the US capital, Washington D.C., were also launched on 16 June 2019, marking an important connection with mainland Europe's westernmost capital city, Lisbon. Ricardo Dinis, TAP Air Portugal Country Manager for UK, Ireland and Nordics, said: “As we gear up for another busy summer across the Atlantic, we are proud to be celebrating the fifth anniversary of flights to Chicago, San Francisco and Washington D.C.. “To celebrate a trio of transatlantic anniversaries within the same month is an iconic moment in TAP’s history and reinforces our commitment to connecting Portugal to the world, and the world to Portugal. “With our Lisbon hub conveniently located for travel from Europe to the US, these flights have proved popular and we look forward to welcoming more customers onboard our North American flights in the coming five years and beyond.” Today, the Portuguese airline offers five flights per week to Chicago, daily flights to San Francisco, and double-daily flights to Washington D.C. from its Lisbon hub. Other North American destinations served by the airline include Boston, Miami, Montreal, New York JFK and Toronto from Lisbon, in addition to flights from both Lisbon and Porto to Newark. Ghirardelli Chocolate Company announces grand reopening of renovated Original Chocolate & Ice Cream Shop in San Francisco
Ghirardelli Chocolate Company announced it will reopen its flagship store, the Original Ghirardelli Chocolate & Ice Cream Shop, at Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco. After a six-month renovation of the historic building, the store celebrates Ghirardelli's history and craftsmanship as a U.S. chocolate pioneer and the company's legacy in San Francisco dating back to the 1850s. The new design features North America's largest flowing chocolate wall, the original, 19-foot "G" from the historic marque Ghirardelli sign, a replica San Francisco cable car that doubles as a seating area, antique chocolate-making equipment on display, and much more for guests to discover. "We can't wait for the public to experience our redesigned iconic flagship store at Ghirardelli Square. This shop is located where in the 1960s we first served what is now our World Famous Hot Fudge Sundae," said Joel Burrows, Ghirardelli's President and CEO. "After being 171 years in business in San Francisco, we are proud of our deep roots in the city. We remain committed to helping Bay Area visitors and locals alike create sweet memories with their families and friends for many more chocolate-loving generations to come." Ghirardelli will celebrate the Original Ghirardelli Chocolate & Ice Cream Shop's grand reopening on Thursday 13th July starting at 10:00 am with live music from Sueños, outdoor games and experiences throughout Ghirardelli Square. The newly renovated flagship store will officially reopen at 11:00 a.m. after Multiple Grammy Award© winning artist, singer, actor, producer and best-selling writer Kelly Rowland leads the ceremonial ribbon cutting with the Ghirardelli management team and community partners. The public is invited to join the festivities, and in honour of Ghirardelli's 171-year history, the first 171 people in line to enter the store will receive a free Ghirardelli World Famous Hot Fudge Sundae. "As a true chocolate lover, I can't wait to help ring in Ghirardelli's next chapter," said Rowland. "No visit to San Francisco is complete without a delicious sundae at Ghirardelli Square. And now there's an even more gorgeous setting for having that unique Ghirardelli chocolate experience." Introduced in 1966, the Original Chocolate and Ice Cream Shop was Ghirardelli's first location that focused on sundaes. When it reopens, the menu will feature 15 different sundaes, including Ghirardelli's World-Famous Hot Fudge Sundae. Additionally, the renovated store format will showcase other fountain and bakery favourites like milkshakes, hot chocolate, brownies, cookies and chocolate-covered strawberries. Among other elements of the elevated retail experience, visitors will get to enjoy a re-designed Pick n' Mix space where they can customise souvenirs featuring their favourite Ghirardelli chocolate squares. The new space also embraces Ghirardelli's rich San Francisco history with a tiled mural of the San Francisco skyline on the second floor, as well as vintage Ghirardelli advertisements in the warmly vibrant Sun Room. Guests will be able to see the original, 19-foot Ghirardelli "G" up close. The Ghirardelli marquee sign, an icon that many travellers and locals identify with San Francisco, turns 100 this year. Aside from being rewired and outfitted with efficient, low-wattage bulbs, the sign components look just as they did in 1923, when illuminated displays were much more novel. Today's sign is equipped with a Colour Kinetics LED system that enables each letter to independently display a variety of colours. The Original Ghirardelli Chocolate & Ice Cream Shop redesign is the second part of a multi-phased renovation project for the brand at Ghirardelli Square. Last year, the company unveiled a completely reimagined Chocolate Experience Store, Ghirardelli's other flagship retail space at Ghirardelli Square. The store concepts and design of the multi-phase renovation project have been led by Bay Area firm Eight Inc.
