Thai travellers get beach ready for May Holiday Travel
After two years of travel restrictions, domestic travel still dominates the top ten destinations for Thailand’s Labor Day and Vesak holidays, just as it did for this year’s Songkran break, according to Agoda. Local favourite beach destinations Pattaya and Hua Hin take the top two spots, while Bangkok – which took third spot for Songkran – has been nudged into fourth spot by Phuket for the May vacations. International Domestic May 30.04.22 - 8.05.22 May 30.04.22 - 8.05.22 Thailand Pattaya Singapore Hua Hin South Korea Phuket Japan Bangkok United States Khao Yai United Kingdom Chiang Mai France Krabi Switzerland Kanchanaburi Vietnam Chonburi Maldives Koh Chang Singapore takes the top spot for Thai’s international travel destinations Agoda data shows, while South Korea jumped from sixth to third most searched destination for the May Holiday as less restrictive quarantine and testing procedures were announced. Other markets reducing travel restrictions and quarantine fare well in the rankings as Thai’s search to re-explore the world. Long haul destinations including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Switzerland, all appear in the top ten for the May long weekends. Mr. John Brown, Chief Executive Officer at Agoda, stated, “Domestic travel continues its popularity, but with limitations relaxing for travellers across the region, we also see Thais embrace the opportunity to re-explore their neighbouring nations in Asia and beyond. Places like Singapore, South Korea, and Europe with fewer COVID-19 entry restrictions are particularly popular, and more markets across Asia, including Thailand, are following suit. Competition to attract tourists will intensify once more as cases decline and vaccination rates increase. Who wins will be determined by who can strike a balance between public safety and the ease of entry that travellers desire.” As many markets across the Asia Pacific region also celebrate festivities and long weekends in May, Agoda’s data shows Thailand as the most popular destination. Search data shows Thailand leading the pack for travellers from Malaysia, Singapore, Korea, and the Philippines with only Indonesians not having Thailand in the top three destinations. Thais gear up to flock the beaches this Songkran holiday
Thais are on the move this Songkran, heading to beach destinations and choosing higher end hotels to celebrate the upcoming Songkran holiday, according to data from digital travel platform, Agoda. Coastal destinations have scooped seven of the top ten spots, with Phuket taking the most booked destination spot during 2021 Songkran, jumping to number one spot from fourth in 2019, and knocking Pattaya off the top into second place. Other beach destinations dominate the 2021 list include Hua Hin/Cha-am (No. 3), Krabi (No. 4), Koh Samui (No. 5), Khao Lak (No. 6) and Koh Chang (No. 9). Bangkok dips to seventh spot from second in 2019. With international travel off the table, Koh Samui (No. 5), Khao Lak (No. 6), Koh Chang (No. 9), Khao Yai (No. 10) make it in the top ten this year, ahead of Tokyo, Rayong, Kanchanaburi, Chonburi. After a year of on and off lockdowns, people seem to be keen to travel together with group travellers, including families, the top traveller type. Travelers this year are also looking to pampering themselves opting for 4–5-star hotels, a change from 2019’s preference for 1-3.5-star hotels. “Songkran marks the beginning of Thai New Year. Recovering from two periods of COVID imposed lockdown, Thais are being a little more indulgent rewarding themselves and their loved ones with upgraded stays to 4-5 star properties. Phuket, Pattaya, and Hua Hin/Cha-am lead the top destinations this year, according to our data. But domestic travelers are also choosing destinations once deemed crowded with international tourists such as Koh Samui. We are also seeing a big pick up in popularity of lesser-known beach destinations like Koh Chang,” said Timothy Hughes, vice president of corporate development in Agoda.
