I am so excited to host a second edition where, together with the Authority, we will immerse the HIGHLANDER community in the natural beauty of our Emirate, reinforce the wellbeing attributes of outdoor activities and show the importance of preserving nature for future generations.” From 18 - 20 November, hikers at home and abroad have a unique opportunity to explore the secrets of the mountains with HIGHLANDER Ras Al Khaimah 2022. Taking place on the UAE’s longest developed hiking trail, the first adventure, HIGHLANDER55, is a 55km hike over three days (18 – 20 November 2022), while the HIGHLANDER Experience is a 30km two-day trek (19 – 20 November 2022). Encompassing 14 kilometers of newly developed and more challenging trails, including the new HIGHLANDER trail, which stands as the longest developed hiking trail in the UAE, the route will take hikers through Wadi Ghalila, making their way through the iconic ‘Stairway to Heaven’ trail for the ultimate hiking experience. Designed to be more challenging than the original trails, the new routes are divided into two sections; the lower segment connects the top of Jebel Jais to the lower trails, through the popular ‘Hidden Oasis’ spot, while the upper segment connects the various Jebel Jais trails to extend the longer distance routes. With safety as paramount, there will be numerous HIGHLANDER checkpoints supported by marshals and medical first aid stations.
Ras Al Khaimah throws down adventure tourism gauntlet with world’s longest zipline
Just a heads up to bucket list tourists and thrill-seekers everywhere: Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah has been officially recognised by Guinness World Records to have the longest zip-line in the world! Located over 1,680m (1.68km) above sea level, Jebel Jais Flight recently opened on the UAE side of the Al Hajar mountain range after more than a year of planning, construction and testing. At 2.83 km – the equivalent to over 28 soccer fields and spanning the entire Jebel Jais peak’s chasm – with a cable weighing more than 6 tons, no less than HH Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, ruler and Supreme Council member of Ras Al Khaimah received the 'world's longest zip-line certification' from Hoda Khachab, official adjudicator of Guinness World Records. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_kak14VVDM Guinness World Records MENA country manager Talal Omar applauded the record-breaking destination launched by the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA). “We have witnessed countless achievements in the Middle East, and as the global authority on record-breaking we are always proud to be a part of such great feats every day,” he said. “The certification event for Jebel Jais Flight highlights an extraordinary attraction that now puts Ras Al Khaimah with UAE as a global primary destination.” “This is a great achievement for Ras Al Khaimah’s international tourism ambitions,” said RAKTDA CEO Haitham Mattar. “We are now receiving our largest-ever number of visitor arrivals and are expecting to see an increasing number of adventure tourists coming from across the globe to try this bucket list experience.” Official Guinness World Records adjudicator Hoda Khachab hands over the world's longest zip-line certification for Jebel Jais Flight to HH Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi of Ras Al Khaimah Jebel Jais Flight uses measures to keep adventure enthusiasts safe and secure. Zip-line riders must gear up with special suits and equipment before they are lifted up and made to 'fly' headfirst in the 'Superman' position. Timed to last roughly three minutes, they arrive on a suspended landing platform unique to Jebel Jais Flight. From here they return to solid ground through a second line, measuring 1km. No age restrictions apply, but riders must be at least 120 cm tall and weigh between 45 to 150 kg. Adrenaline junkies will be thrilled to know that Jebel Jais Flight operations are handled by Toro Verde, the global zip-line authority. Toro Verde COO Ricardo Lizano shared, “Toro Verde brings to Ras Al Khaimah immense zipline management experience earned through previous projects in Central and South America, including Toro Verde Puerto Rico – the ‘Monster’ which, at 2.2 km, previously held the zip-line record now claimed by this ambitious emirate.” “The Jebel Jais Flight will cement Jebel Jais as the adventure tourism hub of the Middle East” – Haitham Mattar, CEO of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority Toro Verde Ras Al Khaimah CEO Jorge Jorge said, “The zip-line actually comprises two main cables, allowing friends and family members to experience and race together, adding to the fun and competitiveness of the facility. While the time and speed they complete the flight in depends on weight and weather conditions, the whole experience is expected to last around two to three minutes, with top speeds reaching between 120km and 150km per hour.” How does RAK plan to recoup its Jebel Jais Flight investment, which runs up to nearly US$6 million? Jorge had an answer for this: “The whole experience costs AED650 (approximately US$177) per head. We anticipate the attraction accommodating a rider every five minutes on the two zip-lines, equating to roughly 200 people per day and around 100,000 per year. We also believe we can operate during the summer months, given that Jebel Jais is traditionally 10 degrees cooler than average UAE temperatures.” Taking advantage of the rugged Al Hajar mountains within its territory, the Ras Al Khaimah emirate is building up Jebel Jais into its flagship adventure and activity tourism product. In line with its Vision 2019 Destination Tourism strategy to promote Ras Al Khaimah as an 'authentic, accessible Arabian experience' beyond beaches and desert dunes, RAKTDA plans to integrate Jebel Jais Flight with the Jebel Jais Via Ferrata (Iron Path) adventure tour that was opened in late 2017 to walkers, hikers and cyclists. Besides adding more zip-lines to Jebel Jais Flight, the tourism board will open a viewing deck park with a multi-purpose events area and food truck zone close to the mountain's summit.

Nature Emirate ‘Ras Al Khaimah’ leads by example…
As the world gears up to celebrate Nature Conservation Day this July 28th, few destinations embody the spirit of responsible tourism like Ras Al Khaimah. Known as the Nature Emirate, it is leading by example—where conservation isn’t just a concept, but a core part of its tourism DNA. Balanced Tourism With dramatic mountain peaks, pristine coastlines, and rich desert ecosystems, Ras Al Khaimah stands as a sanctuary of natural beauty and a beacon for responsible tourism in the Middle East. The Nature Emirate’s Balanced Tourism strategy is a long-term, data-driven framework that prioritises sustainability in tourism development, ensuring that growth benefits the destination’s natural and cultural assets while improving the quality of life in its communities. Ras Al Khaimah became the first destination in the Middle East to get EarthCheck’s Sustainable Destinations Silver Certification. The certification process is a rigorous evaluation based on scientific criteria, benchmarking, monitoring, and auditing across 10 sustainability indicators, including energy and water conservation, waste management and social impact. Ras Al Khaimah’s commitment to sustainable tourism continues through its Responsible RAK programme, now in its fourth year. Twenty-four tourism businesses have earned Silver Certification, helping drive sustainability in the Emirate through waste reduction, biodiversity protection, inclusive hiring, and digital efficiency. With several properties on track to reach Gold Certification by year five, these efforts are laying the groundwork for long-term positive impact, reinforcing Ras Al Khaimah’s ambition to be a regional leader in responsible tourism. A Sanctuary of Natural Wonders Ras Al Khaimah’s varied landscapes read like a naturalist’s dream. From kayaking through mangroves, teeming with birdlife and marine species, to hiking wadis like Naqab, Kadra, and Shah in the rugged Hajar Mountains, the biodiversity is accessible yet protected. For those drawn to the desert, the Al Wadi Nature Reserve offers close encounters with Arabian oryx and gazelles, camel treks, and falconry demonstrations at the Al Wadi Equestrian Centre. Visitors seeking immersive luxury can dine under the stars at Sonara Camp, where the desert’s silence meets fresh ingredients making way to its multi-course meals. Adventure Meets Conservation At Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest peak, thrill-seekers are encouraged to respect nature as they adventure. Every experience—from the world’s longest zipline, the Jais Flight, to the Via Ferrata and 94 kilometres of hiking trails are carefully designed to minimise environmental impact. Another notable example is the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp that houses the world’s first accommodation with the Bear Grylls brand. Its construction cabins utilise recycled materials, are low in their utility usage, and adopt off-grid living principles. It immerses the visitors in survival training and heightens their appreciation for the surrounding natural environment, instilling responsible engagement with nature. Adding to the adventure is Camp 1770, the highest campsite in the UAE with sensational mountain views. Organised by Adventurati Outdoor, experiences such as the Sunset Walk and Dinner at Camp 1770, featuring meals prepared by local mountain tribes, offer immersive ways for visitors to connect with nature. These guided hikes and cultural dining experiences turn conservation into a deeply personal journey. Off-the-Beaten-Path Experiences For travellers keen to delve deeper, the Journey to the Soul of Ras Al Khaimah tour by Unveil Arabia, unlocks Ras Al Khaimah’s hidden ecological and cultural treasures. From picnicking in a date plantation and exploring the indigenous Ghaf tree forests, to learning about camel racing logistics at royal stables, this experience blends environmental education with local tradition. The ascent through the Ru’us Al Jibal mountains, once home to isolated mountain villages, reveals geology as ancient as the Emirate’s 7,000-year-old history. A Call to Co-Create Nature’s Future Exciting developments are on the horizon with the anticipated early 2026 opening of Saij, A Mantis Collection Mountain Lodge. Nestled within the dramatic landscape of Jebel Jais, this eco-luxury resort will feature 70 thoughtfully designed lodges that seamlessly blend into the natural surroundings. Guests will enjoy authentic, low-impact activities such as guided hikes, organic farming, and beekeeping—creating deep connections with nature while supporting the Emirate’s conservation efforts. On this Nature Conservation Day, Ras Al Khaimah is not just celebrating its stunning environment—it’s empowering travellers to become active stewards of it. Guided by the principles of Balanced Tourism, the Emirate is reshaping the future of sustainable travel.
RAKTDA partners with Fujairah Adventures for UAE’s first cross-Emirate adventure experience
In the presence of Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, Fujairah Adventures and Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) have signed a groundbreaking partnership that will take the UAE’s adventure tourism to new heights. Brent Anderson, Chief Commercial Officer, RAKTDA said: “This collaboration isn't just about expanding our tourism offerings – it's about creating meaningful connections between landscapes, communities, and cultures in ways we've never seen before. By partnering with Fujairah Adventures, we are not only enriching adventure tourism in the UAE but also setting a precedent for cross-destination collaborations that celebrate diversity, champion sustainability, and inspire a new era of exploration across the region’s most breathtaking terrains.” Amr Zein Eddin, Fujairah Adventures Center Manager, said: “This MOU represents a strategic step toward strengthening the adventure tourism landscape in the UAE. By joining forces with Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, we enhance our collective presence on the international stage, positioning both emirates as key players in the region’s adventure tourism sector. This collaboration allows us to share expertise, align development efforts, and create a more interconnected and competitive offering that attracts global adventurers while preserving the unique identity of each destination. Additionally, it highlights the rich culture and heritage of both emirates, ensuring that adventure tourism is deeply rooted in the authentic experiences and history that define our regions.” UAE’s first cross-emirate hiking trail The collaboration, formalised by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at Fujairah's International Conference on Adventure Tourism on April 30, brings together two of the UAE’s most striking mountainous terrain, uniting Ras Al Khaimah’s soaring peaks and world-class adventure attractions with Fujairah’s wadis and heritage trails. The adventure opportunities enabled by this partnership – including the creation of the UAE’s first cross-emirate hiking trail – will unlock the full potential of the Northern Emirates’ stunning landscapes. Together, the two destinations will offer a first-of-its-kind, integrated adventure experience that spans rugged mountains, ancient wadis, coastal areas, and expansive deserts. This initiative aligns with both emirates’ commitment to sustainable tourism, ensuring that all developments prioritise environmental conservation, cultural heritage, and community engagement. The emirates of Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah are each home to some of the UAE’s most sought-after adventure attractions. Ras Al Khaimah’s Jebel Jais mountain – the highest peak in the UAE – is home to world-class attractions such as Jais Flight, Jais Sledder, Jais Sky Tour, the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp, and an expansive 97km hiking network. Ras Al Khaimah’s Jebel Jais Rim Trail, a 40-kilometre loop featuring the UAE’s longest balcony walk and ridge trail, offers unparalleled panoramic views of coastal mangroves and the Hajar Mountains extending into Oman. This multi-day trekking experience will be enhanced with overnight camping at mountain settlements, providing visitors with deep cultural immersion and supporting sustainable tourism. Meanwhile, Fujairah boasts the world-class Fujairah Adventure Park, an extensive hiking trail network, and numerous upgraded trails. Its highlights include the renowned Altaybbah Historic Route, an ancient trade passage linking mountain villages and showcasing the region’s cultural heritage. Additionally, the Seven Summits Hike in central Fujairah provides panoramic city and coastal views, while Ain Al Sheria Trail offers geological wonders and ancient petroglyphs. The Wadi Al Dahir Hike leads adventurers to striking sulphur pools, while Wadi Al Abadilah’s lush canyon and year-round water streams present an oasis-like escape. For those seeking diverse terrain, Sal Khail Trail and the Alaqqah Coastal Ridge offer breathtaking hikes with both mountain and sea vistas. These sites complement Ras Al Khaimah’s adventure hotspots, such as Jabal Mibrah, Showka, Dafta, Mamadoh, Esfai, and Esfini, creating a seamlessly connected adventure corridor across both emirates. A strategic partnership at a pivotal moment The timing of this partnership is particularly significant given the rapid growth of the adventure tourism sector. From 2022 to 2025, adventure tourism has substantially contributed to the local economy, with projections estimating the sector will reach AED 30 million by 2030. Global travel trends indicate the adventure tourism segment is expected to grow at an annual rate of 10-15% over the next five years, with market studies suggesting that by 2030, the market could contribute up to 35% of the Middle East’s total tourism revenue. This collaboration is a strategic response to these upward trends, positioning Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah as key players in the region’s adventure tourism boom. Building on a legacy of cross-destination collaboration Teaming up with Fujairah Adventures builds upon RAKTDA’s ongoing commitment to borderless tourism and destination partnerships, including its successful collaboration with Musandam Governorate in the Sultanate of Oman to promote joint travel experiences. The collaboration between Ras Al Khaimah and Oman has already demonstrated the power of regional partnerships in driving international tourism. By facilitating and promoting cross-border experiences, Ras Al Khaimah has positioned itself as a gateway to the region’s most compelling adventure destinations, complementing the offerings of its neighbouring emirates and beyond.
