Indonesia launches a special economic zone for medical tourism

Indonesia announced the launch of its first-ever medical tourism special economic zone  in Sanur yesterday, 2nd July. Located on the island of Bali, the special zone in Sanur is a milestone in Indonesia’s ongoing initiative to meld world-class healthcare with tourism. Speaking at the launch, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto declared: “I think this initiative is the first of its kind in our country, as we’ve envisioned creating a special economic zone offering world-class healthcare services.” Plans for the Sanur medical tourism zone include several facilities ranging from a world-class hospital, specialised clinics, centres for medical research, and a botanical garden boasting of plants and herbs used for healing and wellness. In line with improvements to the healthcare system The Sanur medical tourism zone is part of the Indonesian government’s ongoing initiative to improve healthcare for its citizens, following the approval of a new health law last year that allows foreign medical practitioners to live and practise in the country. It should be noted that, over the past decade, the Indonesian government has worked to boost the standard of healthcare throughout the country as it is sorely behind its regional neighbours. At present, for a nation numbering over 270 million individuals, there are only seven doctors available for every 10,000 patients. Due to current conditions, Indonesians suffering from a variety of diseases have had to look overseas for treatment options, collectively spending close to US$9.2 billion in Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand for quality care.  This prompted Subianto to say on the occasion of the new medical tourism zone's launch: “There are many Indonesian citizens who seek healthcare abroad, which affects our foreign exchange reserves. With this initiative, we can provide our citizens, as well as foreign guests, healthcare services that are on par with the best in the world.”

Indonesia AirAsia successfully lands in Adelaide

Indonesia AirAsia touched down in Adelaide for the first time yesterday, 26th June, opening up more choices for South Australian holiday makers heading to Bali. This marks Indonesia AirAsia’s debut in Adelaide, further strengthening its international network through Bali as a key transit hub. The new route also opens up the possibility of travellers making it to AirAsia’s 130 destinations across Asia and beyond. Indonesia AirAsia will operate four flights a week to the Indonesian holiday destination using the 180-seat A320-200 aircraft, creating more than 74,000 visitor seats per year through Adelaide Airport.  Flights on the new route depart Adelaide every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and return every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Opening doors to Asia and beyond According to Indonesia AirAsia’s acting chief executive Achmad Sadikin Abdurachman: “We invite South Australians to take advantage of Indonesia AirAsia’s new direct flights to Bali from Adelaide, our fourth Australian destination after Perth, Darwin, and Cairns. In addition to offering direct access to Bali, an ever-popular favourite, this new service expands the options for travellers seeking an affordable gateway to AirAsia’s network of over 130 destinations across Asia and beyond.” Abdurachman added that this new addition enables the airline to offer South Australians access to many of their favourite destinations, including Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Singapore, and Phuket, through its FlyThru service.  Travellers can also take advantage of onward connections beyond Bali to explore other remarkable parts of Indonesia, such as Jakarta, the bustling capital, or Labuan Bajo, home to the iconic Komodo National Park.  Abdurachman said: “We believe every flight carries more than just passengers; it carries the spirit of partnership and the potential to bring nations and communities closer together. We sincerely thank Adelaide Airport, the Government of South Australia, and the South Australian Tourism Commission for their invaluable support in making this route a reality so AirAsia can continue promoting cultural exchange, economic collaboration, and two-way tourism.” For his part, Adelaide Airport managing director Brenton Cox remarked: “Indonesia AirAsia will provide greater choice for travellers as Adelaide’s first non-stop Asia-based low-cost carrier since 2015. This also opens up low-cost one- and two-stop options via AirAsia’s formidable network throughout Southeast Asia and beyond including from Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Korea, Japan and India.” Cox also stated that the development of affordable travel options is vital to the growth of their market and the achievement of the airport’s network targets.

China grants Indonesians visa-free entry for up to ten days

China now grants Indonesian citizens a visa-free transit stay of up to days, expanding the number of countries eligible for the policy to 55. The visa-free transit arrangement was announced on Thursday, 12th June. Under the new ruling, Indonesian travellers are allowed to enter China through any of 60 designated ports without a visa, provided they hold valid international travel documents and connecting tickets with confirmed dates and seats to a third country or region.  Eligible travellers can stay in designated areas for up to 10 days. Those allowed entry under the policy may do so for the purpose of tourism, business, family, and exchange-related visits. A necessary move An administration official said the expansion of the visa-free transit policy is an important step toward enhancing China's exchanges and cooperation with members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).  At the same time, it is also expected to help facilitate trade and investment between China and Indonesia, and strengthen the good momentum in bilateral ties. China is Indonesia's largest trading partner. Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world, is Southeast Asia's biggest economy.  The Chinese Foreign Ministry reported that bilateral trade reached US$147.8 billion last year, a 6.1 percent increase year-on-year. Investment and infrastructure cooperation between the two countries has also thrived, with landmark projects including the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Corridor. It is expected that this new visa-free policy, alongside initiatives such as scholarships and youth exchange programs, will open the gate for the emerging middle class, students and young people in Indonesia to gain a better understanding of China.

WTTC: visitor spend in Indonesia could hit a record high this year

New data from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) revealed that international traveller spending in Indonesia is on track to break all records this year. When this happens, it will be proof that Indonesia is definitely a powerhouse when it comes to tourism in Southeast Asia. Per WTTC’s Economic Impact Research (EIR) report for 2025, Indonesia’s international visitor spend is expected to reach an all-time high of IDR 344TN this year. The total is almost 12 percent higher than the previous record set in 2019, marking a sharp increase from IDR 289.1 trillion in 2024. In turn, this reflects renewed global confidence and rising demand for Indonesia’s diverse tourism offerings. While international travel is taking off, domestic tourism also remains a powerful growth engine, reaching a record IDR 381.4 trillion as of press time. An all-time high This year, it is expected that the travel and tourism sectors will contribute an all-time high of IDR 1,269.8 trillion, practically 5.5 percent of the country’s GDP and a 21 percent increase over 2019 levels. Employment is also expected to continue thriving, with Travel & Tourism forecast to support almost 14 million jobs nationwide. WTTC President and chief executive Julia Simpson said: “Indonesia’s success story is no accident. It is the result of bold leadership, targeted investments and close collaboration between the private and public sectors.” Simpson added that the country’s Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has charted a clear path for growth: one that prioritises sustainability, local communities and resilience.  Paired with the ingenuity of Indonesia’s private sector, the result is a vibrant travel and tourism sector that generates employment and drives national prosperity by drawing in travellers from around the globe. In 2024, the travel and tourism sectors contributed nearly IDR 1,138 trillion to the economy, accounting for 5.1 percent of the national economy, and almost 13 million jobs. Ten-year forecast Looking ahead, WTTC forecasts a transformative decade for tourism and travel in Indonesia.  By 2035, the sector is expected to contribute IDR 1,897 trillion to the national economy. Employment is set to grow to nearly 17 million jobs, with the creation of more than 3.2 million additional roles over the next ten years.

Indonesia is the Top Trending Destination for GCC travellers: Ratehawk

Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Some man in javanese playing rebab traditional javanese instrument RateHawk reveals the most popular destinations booked by the GCC travel agents for the summer season 2025. The company highlights the growing interest in European and Asian destinations, thanks to enhanced long-haul connectivity. Serkan Ozbay, Regional Director in the Middle East region, commented: “Summer season in the GCC region traditionally has two spikes in travel demand. The first peak aligns with the Eid Al-Adha holidays, which this year fall between June 5 and June 9, with Dubai as the most popular choice for a staycation within the region and Istanbul as the most preferred outbound destination. The second peak coincides with the start of the local school break in late June and early July, with bigger interest in long-haul summer getaways to Europe and Asia. Whatever destination travelers prefer, RateHawk helps travel agents find attractive offers from our extensive global inventory of 2.7 million accommodations. Additionally, our consolidation strategy, which combines sourcing from over 320 wholesalers, 100 DMCs, and over 130,000 direct contracts, allows our partners to quickly adapt to growing interest in emerging destinations.” According to RateHawk, the top 10 outbound destinations for the entire summer include Turkey, Italy, France, Thailand, Spain, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, and the United States. The average transaction value for accommodation bookings is $1551, with an average stay of five nights. European destinations, with top choices in cultural capitals such as London, Paris, Milan, Munich, and Barcelona, remain a traditional favorite among GCC travelers seeking to escape the summer heat. The steady growth of tourism to Europe continues, driven by improved connectivity through the launch of new direct routes to popular destinations, including Saudia’s flight to Venice and Flydubai’s flights to various Greek resorts, such as Corfu, Santorini, and Mykonos. Although Indonesia didn't enter the top 10 most-booked outbound destinations, it has become one of the fastest-growing travel choices, showing a remarkable two-fold increase in bookings year-over-year, according to RateHawk. Traditionally, over half (53%) of these bookings are located in Bali, particularly in popular areas such as Ubud, Kuta, and Munduk. The visa-free policy and strong air connections with the GCC region, including a newly launched Saudia flight from Jeddah to Bali, continue to boost tourism to this tropical island. Thailand, another favourite Asian destination among GCC travelers, continues to show steady growth of 48% from last year, especially in areas like Bangkok and Phuket. Travelers heading to Asia typically choose longer stays, often up to one week in just one hotel.
