Air India Welcomes First Boeing 787-9 as A350-1000 Deliveries Loom in Record Fleet Renewal
Air India has taken delivery of its first factory-fresh Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, marking a key milestone in the flag carrier’s widebody renewal and its historic order for 470 new aircraft from Airbus and Boeing. The jet, registered VT-AWA, is the first of 20 787-9s ordered in 2023 and will pave the way for more Dreamliners and the airline’s first Airbus A350-1000s to join the fleet later this year. First Line-Fit 787-9 Arrives in Delhi The new 787-9 completed a nearly 17-hour delivery flight from Boeing’s Everett factory in Washington state before touching down at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. It is Air India’s first “line-fit” 787-9, built from the ground up to the airline’s own cabin specification rather than inherited or retrofitted from another operator. Configured with 296 seats across three cabins – business, premium economy and economy – the Dreamliner debuts “bespoke cabin interiors” installed directly on the Boeing production line, with full details of the new products to be revealed in the coming weeks. Commercial long-haul operations are expected to begin in February 2026 on an as-yet undisclosed international route. Part of a 470-Aircraft Megadeal The 787-9 delivery forms part of Air India’s landmark order for 470 aircraft, comprising 250 Airbus jets and 220 Boeing jets, announced as one of the largest deals in civil aviation history. The widebody element includes 20 Boeing 787-9s, 10 Boeing 777-9s, six Airbus A350-900s and 34 Airbus A350-1000s, aimed at transforming the carrier’s long-haul product and expanding its global network. According to Air India, 2026 will see a total of six new widebody deliveries – a mix of 787-9s and A350-1000s – including the newly arrived VT-AWA. These aircraft will progressively replace older widebodies and support new nonstop routes between India and key markets in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Upgraded Cabins Across the 787 Fleet Alongside new deliveries, Air India is in the midst of a major retrofit program for its existing 787-8 fleet. The airline currently operates 26 787-8s and six 787-9s inherited from Vistara, with “many of these aircraft” due to receive new cabins broadly aligned with the standard debuting on VT-AWA by the end of 2026. The retrofit project, part of a wider US$400 million product investment, will introduce updated business, premium economy and economy seats, new inflight entertainment systems, refreshed interiors and onboard Wi‑Fi across the long-haul fleet. Air India aims to complete the 787-8 cabin upgrades by mid-2027, followed by similar work on its Boeing 777-300ERs. Following a year where Indian arrivals surged to 2.48 million, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is now shifting its focus toward increasing the length of stay and promoting secondary destinations to combat overtourism in hubs like Bangkok and Phuket. Travel Daily Media interviews Nattachit Oonsiam, Director, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Mumbai Office to find out more about the destinations marketing plans in India. To further promote the destination, what all campaigns did you launch in India in 2025? Can you also share the numbers of tourists that have visited Thailand in 2025 globally and statistics from India as well? Nattachit Oonsiam (NO): In 2025, our focus in India was on targeted engagement rather than broad-based promotion. Campaigns such as ASEAN + India Shoppers in Thailand, Living It Up in Thailand, and Celebrations with Care and Inner Shine, corporate and incentive group scheme were designed around evolving travel preferences of not just Indians but global travellers, including shopping, culture, food, weddings, and milestone travel. These were supported by sustained trade activity, roadshows, and familiarisation programmes, and aligned under the Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year 2025, which gave us a strong year-round cultural and experiential framework. Thailand welcomed 32.97 million international visitors in 2025. From India, arrivals crossed 2.48 million, marking a 17 per cent year-on-year increase and reinforcing India’s position as one of Thailand’s top three source markets. Chiang Rai - Wat Rong Suea Ten - Blue Temple TDM: Which parts of India are you getting the maximum tourists from? What are you doing to promote the destination in Tier-2 cities? Which are the main airlines that connect to your country from India? NO: Metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad continue to be our strongest source markets, while Tier-2 cities like Nagpur, Kochi, Indore, Coimbatore etc are showing consistent growth. To support this, we expanded our trade efforts like workshops, sales calls to these cities with the aim to improve product knowledge and encourage more diverse itineraries even from Tier- 2 markets. Air connectivity plays a crucial role. Direct services by IndiGo, Air India, Thai Airways, Thai AirAsia, SpiceJet, and Thai VietJet now connect multiple Indian cities to Thailand’s key gateways. Combined with visa-free entry, this has supported repeat visits and family travel from across India. Which new source markets for tourism are you looking at in 2026? NO: Our approach for 2026 is firmly centered on value-led growth. India will remain a priority market, particularly for luxury travel, wellness, event-led travel, weddings & MICE. TDM: Seeing the progress that Thailand tourism has made, many other SE destinations are promoting themselves further for tourism. Which destinations are your competitors, and how well geared are you to face the competition? NO: Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore are all actively engaging the Indian market. Thailand’s advantage lies in its diversity and maturity as a destination. Beaches, cities, culture, wellness, and gastronomy can all be experienced within a single journey. Our focus is now on raising service standards, promoting sustainability, and highlighting secondary destinations alongside established hubs such as Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai, allowing Thailand to remain competitive while offering depth and balance. Phang Nga, Thailand TDM: Crowds and congestion completely destroy a destination and irk the locals. Which destinations in Thailand have succumbed to overtourism? What are you doing to reduce the same? NO: Destinations such as Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya do experience seasonal pressure at certain times of the year due to their popularity. Acknowledging this openly is important. Our focus has been on managing growth more responsibly so that tourism does not come at the cost of local communities or the environment. Measures include promoting secondary cities and regions to spread visitor flows, introducing capacity controls in environmentally sensitive areas, and strengthening community-led tourism so local stakeholders benefit directly. These efforts are supported by close coordination between provincial authorities, tourism bodies, and the private sector, with clearer visitor guidelines and improved infrastructure. The objective is to reduce pressure on key hotspots while maintaining a positive, well-managed experience for travellers. NO: Travellers are becoming more intentional in their choices. Travel advisors who move beyond standard packages and develop expertise in regional destinations and thematic travel will be better placed to meet these evolving expectations. Air India Express launches ‘Time to Travel’ sale
Air India Express has unveiled its 'Time to Travel' sale, offering special fares for a limited period across its domestic and international routes. Travellers can book Lite fares, which exclude check-in baggage, starting from ₹1,350 for domestic flights and ₹5,450 for international journeys. The sale is open until 16 January 2026, with travel dates available from 20 January to 30 April 2026. The airline's Value fares, which include standard check-in baggage, begin at ₹1,400 domestically and ₹5,550 internationally. Business fares are priced from ₹8,300 on domestic routes and ₹8,500 on international ones. Bookings can be made via the airline's website, mobile app, and major booking channels. Air India Express is offering Zero Convenience Fees on bookings made through its mobile app and for net banking payments on its website. Lite fares come with discounted check-in baggage rates—₹1,500 for 15 kg on domestic flights and ₹2,500 for 20 kg on international flights. Additionally, passengers can save 20% on Prime and Standard seats and hot meals. NeuPass members can enjoy a 25% discount on Business Class fares. The airline has expanded its fleet with over 40 new Boeing 737-8 aeroplanes.
