India’s air market is valued at INR 225,000 crores (US$27.5 billion) in FY24

Representative Image   VIDEC Consultants, an India-based travel research and M&A advisory firm, has released insights from its latest India Travel Market Opportunity, FY22-FY27 study. VIDEC undertook independent, rigorous and unbiased research covering air, hotel, alternate accommodations, rail and intercity bus categories, with an emphasis on Indian outbound and the role of online travel intermediaries. The research employs a highly complex demand-side methodology to accurately assess the true potential of India's travel market. India recorded 220 million air passengers in FY24, a 16% increase from 190 million in FY23. With over 3,200 daily domestic and 625 daily international departures in December 2024, India is the world's third-largest aviation market. As of December 2024, India has the largest aircraft order book, with over 1,700 new aircraft—twice the size of its current fleet exceeding 825 aircrafts. The country’s airport infrastructure has also expanded significantly, growing from 74 operational airports in 2013 to 157 in 2024. Nearly 80 more airports are expected within the next five years. The key findings from the study are: Growing at a CAGR of 13.7% between FY24 and FY27, air is the fastest-growing travel category, projected to reach ₹333,000 crores ($40.4 billion). The international segment accounted for 30% of India's total 220 million flown passengers in FY24. Valued at ₹140,000 crores ($16.9 billion), it represents 60% of India's total air GBV, making it the most valuable category. The domestic air market, valued at ₹88,000 crores ($10.6 billion) in FY24, is the second-most penetrated category after rail. With over 80% market share, OTA is the predominant online distribution channel for domestic air. Traditional channels prevail in international air distribution owed to the complexity, high price, visa requirements and the cultural affinity for a human touchpoint. Air is the beloved category for OTAs, generating ₹70,000 crores ($8.5 billion) in air GBV in FY24—accounting for 60% of total OTA GBV. With nearly 58% share, MakeMyTrip Group led the Indian air OTA market grossing ₹40,800 crores ($4.9 billion) in GBV. Air-heavy OTAs Cleartrip and EaseMyTrip followed consecutively, with air contributing over 90% of their total GBV. Yatra was the fourth largest air OTA, distinguished by its higher mix of corporate bookings compared to leisure. Meanwhile, ixigo—primarily a ground-focused OTA—emerged as the fastest-growing air OTA, with its air category expanding 75% annually. Commenting on the key trends, Virendra Jain, CEO and co-founder of VIDEC, said, “India’s aviation sector continues to soar, operating at high load factors of nearly 90% while sustaining high airfares—clear evidence of robust consumer demand. On November 17, 2024, we marked a historic milestone with 5 lakh domestic passengers in a single day, setting a new lifetime high. India was never a hub. It has started looking as one, a connector between Middle East and SEA/Orient, especially owed to the blue collar workforce and religious travel. For us to achieve multi-fold growth, Indian aviation needs to do what Emirates did in conjunction with Dubai as a destination. Amidst all this, Indigo’s aspirations to deploy wide bodies and sizably increase their medium to long haul routes could be the catalyst Indian aviation needs.” India’s aviation sector is dominated by a duopoly, with IndiGo and the Air India Group (Air India & Air India Express) controlling 90% of domestic traffic. On the international routes, India had 67 million passengers in FY24 vs.54 million FY23. Both these carriers grew by 38% and 31% respectively, outpacing India’s growth on international routes. Mergers typically take two to three years for full integration of technology, operations, and human resources. With the Vistara and AirAsia India brands phased out, Air India Group now operates a streamlined dual-brand strategy—one full-service and one low-cost carrier. Tata Group’s next moves will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Indian aviation. India is set to reach 30 million outbound passengers in 2025, yet as the world’s largest adult population, its potential remains vastly untapped. In comparison, China recorded 155 million outbound travelers in 2019. This contrast underscores India's immense growth opportunity and is a testament to the power of its demographic dividend.

States across the country are unlocking tourism opportunities in their own unique ways — and now, it’s time for India to position itself firmly on the global MICE map. “With iconic venues like Bharat Mandapam, Yashobhoomi, and Jio World Centre, and with MICE prioritized under the Incredible India campaign, we aim to elevate at least 10 Indian cities into the world’s top MICE destinations. Guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership, and with states like Rajasthan leading through legacy and innovation, India is poised to become the world’s most admired tourism and events destination,” the Tourism Minister added while highlighting the growing potential of the country in the MICE segment. Suman Bery, Vice Chairperson, NITI Aayog, emphasized that tourism and hospitality are among the world’s largest employment generators. He highlighted the immense potential of the sector to create high-quality, skill-intensive jobs in India’s youthful, ambitious economy. Bery stated, “At NITI Aayog, we view MICE tourism not only as a promotional opportunity but as a development imperative,” urging for more than just infrastructure development. He stressed the need for centre-state coordination, deregulation, and the breaking down of silos across ministries to achieve this vision. He added that India must move towards a comprehensive tourism experience that integrates events, cultural infrastructure, and global best practices to fully unlock its potential. Bery further emphasized, “The vision laid out by Hon’ble PM during India’s G20 presidency has opened new pathways. It is now up to states to build on this momentum. From deregulation to concert tourism, India has the opportunity to become a global hub for events and experiences.” Traditions with transformations Highlighting Rajasthan as an emerging MICE destination,  Diya Kumari, Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan, said, “Rajasthan is not just a heritage destination — it is a vibrant, future-ready hub for MICE tourism. With state-of-the-art convention centres, seamless connectivity, digital infrastructure, and world-class hospitality, we are building a dynamic ecosystem that blends tradition with transformation.” She further added, “From our cultural richness to rural tourism circuits and new destination development, every part of Rajasthan is being equipped to host high-impact events. We believe in the power of strong public-private partnerships — from local artisans to luxury hoteliers, from grassroots logistics teams to global planners, everyone plays a role.” Elucidating Rajasthan’s commitment to MICE not as a short-term effort, but as a strategic priority to drive growth, innovation, and global visibility, the Deputy CM of Rajasthan said, “Rajasthan is ready — not just to welcome conferences, but to offer an unforgettable, enriching experience.” Pravati Parida, Deputy Chief Minister, Government of Odisha, said: “Whether it's conferences or exhibitions, India is ready to welcome the world—and Odisha stands proudly among the leading states. From the spiritual serenity of Puri to the architectural marvel of Konark, our state offers not only robust infrastructure but also a rich cultural tapestry for all to experience”. Need for city-level convention promotion bureaus Suman Billa, Additional Secretary & Director General of Tourism, Government of India, stated that India is poised to lead global MICE tourism, driven by booming aviation, enhanced connectivity, and world-class infrastructure. He added, “A unified national strategy, skilled talent, digital tools, and strong state-led promotion can propel us into the top five MICE markets by 2025.” While India already has the necessary infrastructure and market demand, he pointed out that the real challenge lies in coordination. Billa emphasized the need for city-level convention promotion bureaus, a strong national MICE brand, skill development academies, and a seamless digital portal. He concluded that India has the potential to become one of the leading global MICE destinations by 2035. Dr. Jyotsna Suri, Past President, FICCI; Mentor, FICCI Tourism Committee; CMD, The LaLit Suri Hospitality Group, highlighted that India is no longer just a leisure destination and said “We are now ready to take on the world as a leading MICE destination. With exceptional infrastructure, seamless connectivity, and the proven capabilities we demonstrated during the G20, we have everything it takes to host large-scale global conventions. Through platforms like the Great Indian Travel Bazaar and Meet in India, we are not just showcasing our potential — we are inviting the world to collaborate, catalyse, and say, ‘Let’s meet in India”. The inaugural session was also graced by senior dignitaries and over 300 leading industry stakeholders. The platform spotlighted India’s readiness to lead in the global MICE landscape through robust infrastructure, strategic partnerships and destination-driven promotion. The India MICE market generated a revenue of USD 49,402.6 million in 2024 and is expected to reach USD 103,686.5 million by 2030 while registering a growth of 13% CAGR. This growth is fuelled by the recent developments in MICE-ready destinations coming up in cities like Varanasi, Khajuraho, Kochi etc. Over the last decade, India has shown a tremendous growth curve in infrastructure with be it the construction of roads over 1,50,000 km, new railway stations, semi high-speed trains, inland waterways, more than 150 operational airports and over 2.48 million hotel rooms. Further, India's hosting of G20 nations has reinforced India’s growing venue network and regional tourism potential. Following the conclave, the 14th edition of GITB will commence from May 5–6 at the Jaipur Exhibition and Convention Centre (JECC), Sitapura. With over 280 international buyers from 55 countries, and active participation from both domestic and foreign MICE and leisure operators, GITB continues to be the leading platform for inbound tourism business development in India.

Representative Image With summer holidays fast approaching, the Schengen region is once again emerging as the preferred destination for Indian travellers. According to data from Atlys, a visa-processing platform, there has been a notable 29% increase in Schengen visa applications compared to last year, highlighting the region's sustained popularity among those seeking sunlit experiences and cultural immersion. Popular entry points into the Schengen region as per Atlys data are Portugal, Greece, Spain, and Italy. These countries attract visitors with their vibrant local cultures, strong tourism infrastructure, and welcoming atmosphere. Gen Z and Millennial travellers in particular have driven much of this growth, with Atlys seeing a 23.5% rise in visa requests since last year from younger travellers eager for extended European holidays. While major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru remain significant sources of visa applications, Atlys has also recorded a meaningful shift towards tier-two cities, including Pune, Ahmedabad, and Chandigarh, where applications rose by 17.8% since the past year. This increase points to Europe's widening appeal beyond India’s metropolitan hubs. “We’re witnessing a new wave of Indian travellers who are exploring the world with greater intention and curiosity,” said Mohak Nahta, Founder and CEO of Atlys. “Travel today isn’t just about visiting landmarks, it’s about experiencing cultures, connecting with people, and creating lasting memories.” For those seeking luxury travel France, Italy, and Switzerland continue to top the list. On the other hand, thrill-seekers and adventure enthusiasts are increasingly drawn to Austria, Slovenia, and parts of northern Spain, where alpine sports, hiking trails, and offbeat nature escapes provide an adrenaline-filled European escape. The Mediterranean climate aligns perfectly with the summer holiday season offering ideal travel conditions. With temperatures ranging from 20-30°C across most Schengen countries during this period, travellers can enjoy long daylight hours and outdoor activities Atlys continues to empower Indian travellers, simplifying visa processing to make global exploration effortless, helping turn European summer dreams into reality.

Air India to operate daily flights to Tokyo Haneda from 15 June 2025

Air India announced the expansion of its non-stop service between Delhi and Tokyo Haneda, increasing from 4x weekly flights to daily flights, starting 15 June 2025. This enhancement strengthens connectivity between India and Japan, offering greater convenience for travellers and supporting growing trade and tourism between the two countries. This move builds on Air India’s recent shift to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (from Narita) on 31 March 2025, which reduced travel time to Tokyo Station to approximately 30 minutes. The daily flights, operated with Air India’s Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, provide passengers with faster access to central Tokyo, as Haneda Airport is just 18 km from downtown Tokyo. “Expanding our Delhi-Tokyo Haneda service to daily flights reflects Air India’s commitment to meeting the rising demand for travel between India and Japan,” said Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer, Air India. “This daily service, combined with our deepened codeshare partnership with All Nippon Airways, makes it easier for our guests to explore Japan and connect conveniently to other destinations in the country beyond Tokyo.” Through Air India’s expanded codeshare with Star Alliance partner All Nippon Airways (ANA), Air India guests can conveniently connect from Tokyo Haneda to six major Japanese cities—Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Nagoya, Okinawa, Osaka, and Sapporo—on a single ticket with baggage checked through to their final destination. The daily flights enable seamless connections to domestic Indian destinations like Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Pune, as well as international routes across Asia and Europe. The updated flight schedule, effective 15 June 2025, is as follows: AI358: Departs Delhi (DEL) at 2020 Hrs, arrives Tokyo Haneda (HND) at 0755 Hrs next day (daily). AI357: Departs Tokyo Haneda (HND) at 1150 Hrs, arrives Delhi (DEL) at 1725 Hrs (daily). Bookings for Air India’s Delhi-Tokyo Haneda flights are open on all channels, including Air India’s website, mobile app, and through travel agents.
