Alliance Française de Hong Kong (AFHK) and Hong Kong Tramways hold tram design competition

As a way of celebrating creativity through cultural exchange, the Alliance Française de Hong Kong (AFHK) and Tramplus, a sister company of Hong Kong Tramways, teamed up for a joint Tram Design Competition. The contest was geared towards transforming one of the city's most iconic modes of transport into a moving canvas of French-inspired imagination. As such, the competition opened a new chapter in a long-standing partnership between AFHK and Hong Kong Tramways, who have collaborated for years to bring French cultural events to the streets of Hong Kong. These have included the Hong Kong French Film Festival, which has become a beloved annual tradition of many cinephiles.  The Tram Design Competition built on this legacy by encouraging secondary school students to engage with French aesthetics through art and design. Learning through creative pursuits The collaboration between AFHK and Tramplus reflects a shared commitment to enriching the learning experience of Hong Kong's youth through creativity, language, and cultural immersion.  By combining AFHK's more than seven decades of expertise in French education and cultural promotion with Tramplus's innovative approach to community placemaking, the project offers students a unique opportunity to explore French culture in a dynamic and creative format. Centred around the theme Découverte de la Beauté Française (Discovering French Beauty), select secondary school students designed tram exteriors inspired by French art, fashion, innovation, and heritage.  The winning design created by Li Pui Hiu from St. Mark's School will be unveiled on 8th September at 10:00am at the Whitty Street Tram Depot, in the presence of Christile Drulhe, Consul General of France in Hong Kong and Macau.  The tram will circulate through the city for four weeks, showcasing the student's creative artwork to the public.

Hong Kong to host 3rd IATA World Sustainability Symposium

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that its third World Sustainability Symposium (WSS) will be held in Hong Kong SAR, China this year.  Slated for 21st and 22nd October and hosted by Cathay Pacific, the event will bring together leaders from aviation, energy, finance, and policy to advance the industry’s commitment to achieving net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. This is the first time that the symposium will be staged in Asia. Cathay Group chief executive Ronald Lam said: “We are honoured that Hong Kong has been selected as the location and Cathay Pacific as the host airline. Collaboration across multiple sectors and regulators is essential for aviation to achieve its decarbonization goals, and gatherings like this provide a valuable platform for leading voices to come together to drive meaningful change. Such cooperation is especially important as the industry works to develop the ecosystem of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with Hong Kong having the potential to become one of Asia’s major centres for SAF in the future.” Aviation sustainability is at a critical point According to IATA director-general Willie Walsh, sustainability in aviation is now at a crucial point.  While airlines are fully committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, the industry has not seen sufficient, timely action by policymakers, aerospace manufacturers, oil companies, or fuel producers to support this commitment.  In which case, the upcoming symposium is a timely one, especially because it follows the 42nd ICAO Assembly at which the industry will have advocated for stronger government policies to support aviation’s energy transition to SAF and the integrity of CORSIA.  As Walsh puts it: “This event is an essential rallying call for all those who have a stake in air transport’s future to overcome any challenges in the way of accelerating the pace of this crucial energy transition.” At the same time, the symposium precedes COP30 which is focusing on turning pledges into actions.  That said, it seeks to bridge these two global milestones with in-depth explorations of pragmatic measures to accelerate aviation’s decarbonization by: Removing hurdles standing in the way of expanding SAF production Attracting financing for the $4.7 trillion cost of decarbonization Integrating emerging technology developments by existing players and start-ups Increasing collaboration across the value chain What to expect at the 3rd IATA WSS The Symposium will open with a welcome speech from Ronald Lam, CEO of the Cathay Group, and a keynote address from Mable Chan, secretary of transport and logistics for the Hong Kong SAR Government.  These will be followed by a leadership conversation between Patrick Healy, Chair of the Cathay Group, and Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, to candidly review progress on decarbonization.   The speaker lineup of global experts for the remainder of the symposium includes: Dr. Jun Ma, Chairman & President, Hong Kong Green Finance Association Dr. Fabiano Piccino, Air Logistics Global Head of Sustainability, Kuehne+Nagel Jouk Boeye, Managing Director Corporate Sourcing, Supply Chain Sustainability & Net Zero Operations, HSBC Christopher Au, Director Asia Pacific Climate Risk Centre, WTW Ayesha Choudhury, Chief Commercial Officer, Infinium IATA senior vice-president for sustainability and chief economist Marie Owens Thomsen said: “WSS is where airlines and all stakeholders get together to develop the understanding and the policies that are necessary to achieve the financial and environmental sustainability of airlines. It is a platform for radical collaboration, involving all disciplines and sectors, and where efforts can be coordinated to bring practical solutions to the market. Decarbonizing the airline industry is not just an industry issue but part of the global energy-transition that cuts across the whole world economy. If treated as such, adopting a holistic approach encompassing policy, energy and finance to agriculture, technology and more, it will be possible to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions in 2050.”

Hong Kong notes significant increase in arrivals from the UK

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) reports a 14 percent increase in UK visitors to Hong Kong in the first half of 2025, compared to the same period in 2024.  With 169,000 UK travellers having visited in the first six months, the statistics reveal a 64 percent recovery compared to the same period in 2018. HKTB director for Europe Anette Wendel-Menke commented: “Hong Kong itself has always been a significant draw for many travellers, boasting a unique blend of Eastern and Western cultures, world-class food and dynamic energy.” Wendel-Menke added that, based on current reports, 38 percent of visitors were first timers, which is higher than both 2024 and 2018.  A shot in the arm Visitor numbers from the UK were driven significantly by the government repositioning the tourism offering to centre around culture, sports, gastronomy, the outdoors and mega events, such as Art Basel Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens.  Indeed, this has helped broaden Hong Kong's appeal to a wider range of travellers with different interests. To date, Hong Kong has welcomed several new openings recently including Kai Tak Sports Park, the destination’s largest integrated sports and entertainment landmark. At the same time, there has been a spate of new hotel openings in recent months, including the Mondrian Hong Kong, Hopewell Hotel, and Dorsett Kai Tak Hong Kong.  2025 will also welcome the Kimpton Hong Kong which is anticipated to open in September.

Hong Kong Airlines to launch a new direct service to Melbourne from 12 Dec 2025

Hong Kong Airlines announced that it will launch a new direct service to Melbourne from 12 December 2025. The new route will operate three times a week, offering travellers more flexible and convenient options for travel to Australia. To commemorate this significant milestone, a signing ceremony was held at Melbourne Airport, attended by representatives from Hong Kong Airlines, Melbourne Airport as well as Victorian Government. Speaking at the ceremony, Hong Kong Airlines President Jeff Sun said: "This has been a year of significant progress for our Australian market strategy. Following the resumption of our Gold Coast service in January and the launch of our Sydney route in June, we are delighted to add Melbourne as another key destination within just six months. This establishes Hong Kong Airlines as the second local carrier to offer direct flights to Australia's major cities and marks 2025 as a crucial milestone in our international transformation." “This new service will not only provide passengers a competitive and high-quality travel option but will also cater to the diverse needs of business and leisure travellers, further deepening the trade, cultural, and tourism ties between Hong Kong and Melbourne. The launch of this service was made possible by the proactive support of the government from both cities. Looking ahead, we will leverage the enhanced capacity of Hong Kong International Airport's Three-Runway System to open up more attractive new destinations for our passengers." Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus said the arrival of Hong Kong Airlines will provide more choice and greater capacity into one of Asia’s biggest international hubs. “The growth in our international market shows the importance of competition and choice, which is why we are so excited to welcome Hong Kong Airlines to the mix today.  Hong Kong is the fourth largest international market for us at Melbourne Airport so I expect there will be strong demand for this service.” “The aviation landscape is highly competitive and without the work of the Federal Government to expand bilateral air traffic rights along with the great support of the state government and Visit Victoria, we wouldn’t be standing here today.” Minister for Economic Growth and Jobs at the Victorian Government Danny Pearson, stated: “More flights mean more tourists delivering a stronger economy and more jobs for Victorians – from tour operators to hospitality staff and hotel workers. The additional flights will also increase air freight capacity for Victorian exporters sending their products and produce to Asia.” The Hong Kong Airlines service to Melbourne will be operated by Airbus A330 aircraft. The flight schedule is flexibly timed to facilitate convenient connections for passengers transiting through Hong Kong to our popular destinations.
