Finland named ‘World’s Happiest Country’ for the 8th consecutive year

For the eighth year in a row, Finland has been named the happiest country in the world by the annual ‘United Nations World Happiness Report’, holding the top title since 2018. Fresh insights from the World Happiness Report 2025 highlight the importance of social connections as well as caring and sharing. While many speculate about Finland’s secret to happiness, one key factor stands out: the sauna. While sauna is not the sole contributor to Finns’ continuous happiness, it is one of the most essential and unifying factors, with 90% of Finns bathing in a sauna at least once a week. Visit Finland explores this connection through the Finnish Sauna Happiness Hierarchy. Health & Wellbeing:  Sauna plays a significant role in the well-being of Finns, offering benefits like muscle relaxation, improved sleep, and better circulation. Sauna isn't just a pastime; it’s a national treasure. Even Finland’s ancient epic, the Kalevala, references a God of Sauna, called upon to steam away sickness. As Finns like to say, “The sauna is the poor man's pharmacy.” No prescription needed—just heat, steam, and a little Finnish magic. Tip: Experience traditional sauna treatments at Sipoonjoki Sauna, which includes a smoke sauna just outside Helsinki. Safe space: Throughout history, the sauna has served as Finland’s trusted place of comfort and safety. Historically, significant life events such as childbirth and important decisions have taken place within its warmth. In the sauna, everyone is equal. Shared sauna experiences encourage deep conversations, social connections, and a sense of community. Ultimately, the sauna remains a vital cultural institution, offering solace and security, and anchoring the collective spirit of Finland. Tip: Visit Rajaportin sauna in Tampere, Finland’s oldest operating public sauna. Connection & Community: Finnish saunas are communal spaces where families and friends gather, reinforcing social bonds and a sense of belonging. Sharing a sauna promotes openness, equality, and connection with others. Public saunas provide a space for people of all ages to meet and chat about any contemporary topic. Public saunas can be found in every city, public pool, gym, and even some workplaces and restaurants. Tip: Check out Sompasauna in Helsinki, a popular spot for both local sauna enthusiasts and visitors alike. Mental Resilience & Finnish ‘Sisu’: Sauna rituals, often paired with ice dips or birch whisking, enhance emotional well-being and resilience. The sauna fosters self-confidence and resilience, embodying the Finnish concept of “sisu,” representing inner strength and grit. Tip: Find your inner “sisu” by taking a dip in the refreshing water of Lake Littoinen in Turku’s Archipelago and enjoy the heat of the saunas in Järvelä. Creativity & Innovation: With approximately 3 million saunas for a population of 5.5 million, Finland is home to some of the world’s most contemporary, innovative, and quirky saunas. Tip: Try the Arctic Sauna Experience at Rovaniemi’s Apukka Resort featuring a a sauna made from ice. The Finnish sauna has a vital connection with many of the key reasons behind the nation’s happiness - from physiological benefits to psychological needs related to social connection, esteem, and self-actualization. “Finnish sauna is a sanctuary of happiness: it is good for your health, it is a safe space to relax and wash off the stress, it is taking care of social needs and feeling of belonging to community, it is an integral part of national character and a source of creativity,” Heli Jimenez, Senior Director, International Marketing at Visit Finland, sums up.

Finland for summer travel

Aerial view of bridge road with red car over blue water lake or sea with island and green woods in summer Finland   Often associated with icy winters and the enchanting Northern Lights, Finland may not be the first destination that comes to mind for a summer holiday. However, beyond its snow-covered landscapes lies a hidden gem for travelers seeking a refreshing escape from the summer heat. With its pristine lakes, unspoiled wilderness, and the extraordinary phenomenon of the Midnight Sun, Finland transforms into an idyllic retreat during the warmer months.    Offering an ideal balance between relaxation and adventure, the country provides endless opportunities to embrace nature, explore cultural traditions, and enjoy long sunlit days. Here are five reasons why Finland is the perfect destination for a summer getaway.   Escape to a Lakeside Paradise  Finland’s summer offers an opportunity to retreat from urban life and immerse in nature’s tranquility. The Finnish tradition of spending time in lakeside cottages provides a serene escape, where fresh air and picturesque surroundings create a setting for relaxation. Renting a cabin by the lake allows visitors to experience this cultural hallmark, with activities such as swimming in pristine waters, rowing across scenic landscapes, and engaging in traditional fishing practices.  Chase the Midnight Sun  A defining feature of Finland’s summer is the Midnight Sun, a natural phenomenon where the sun remains above the horizon for an extended period. This occurrence, visible in regions within the Arctic Circle from May to August, bathes the landscape in a surreal glow. The phenomenon is particularly striking at elevated vantage points and is celebrated through cultural events such as the Sodankylä Midnight Sun Film Festival, which attracts renowned filmmakers and audiences from across the world.    Nature’s Playground Awaits  Finland is home to 40 national parks, each offering an opportunity to explore unspoiled wilderness. The Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park in Lapland, Oulanka National Park in Kuusamo, and Nuuksio National Park in Southern Finland are among the notable destinations. Visitors can enjoy hiking through dense forests, taking in panoramic views, and experiencing some of the world’s cleanest air and purest water. These parks provide a setting for both adventure and solitude.  Sun, Sand, and Seaside Bliss in Helsinki  Despite being primarily associated with its lakes and forests, Finland also offers appealing coastal retreats. Helsinki features a selection of picturesque beaches, such as Hietaniemi Beach, known for its sandy shores and vibrant atmosphere, and the tranquil Pihlajasaari Island with its historic villas and secluded beaches. Mustikkamaa provides a family-friendly environment, while the Allas Sea Pool offers a modern urban retreat with heated seawater pools in the heart of the city. These coastal locations present an alternative way to experience Finland’s summer charm.   With its distinctive natural phenomena, rich cultural traditions, and diverse landscapes, Finland stands out as an exceptional summer destination, easily accessible via regular direct flights from New Delhi to Helsinki.

CWT expands access to Finnair NDC content in Finland and the Nordics

CWT has made rapid progress in deploying NDC capabilities in Finland since May last year, ensuring its customers continue to have uninterrupted access to Finnair content through their preferred booking channels.  When Finnair removed its last remaining domestic itineraries from EDIFACT distribution in February this year, more than 90% of CWT’s customers in Finland were already booking this content via NDC-enabled connections using the Amadeus Cytric online booking tool (OBT), as well as through travel counselor-assisted channels such as phone, email, and messaging. CWT will further expand its NDC coverage in the Nordics to include additional routes, airlines, and points-of-sale over the next three months. “What we’ve achieved in Finland exemplifies how NDC can be deployed quickly, at scale, and without disruption to customers,” said Erik Magnuson, CWT’s Vice President of Product Management, Travel Content & Connectivity. “This was the result of meticulous planning and swift technology development by our teams, as well as our close collaboration with Amadeus and Finnair. We are now using this as a blueprint to expand our NDC capabilities with other airlines around the world.” “Our successful deployment of NDC with CWT in Finland marks a significant milestone on our path of distribution transformation,” Jenni Suomela, Vice President Global Sales and Channel Management, Finnair, said. “The strong collaboration with our partners at CWT and Amadeus made it possible to complete this roll-out swiftly, ensuring seamless access to our services. We’re excited to make further progress on this distribution transformation to enable us to provide more personalized and dynamic content and to meet our joint customers’ needs and expectations. The recently launched new product PrioFlex, only available through modern channels, is a great example of this.” “We are very happy to see the positive results of our close collaboration with CWT and Finnair,” said Ludo Verheggen, NDC[X] Program Director, Amadeus. “Together, we have ensured that CWT’s customers can have easy access to all of Finnair's content, either through our Cytric Easy self-booking tool or through CWT’s travel counselors using Amadeus’ NDC-enabled Selling Platform Connect solution. We are working hard together with our partners, customers, and the industry to unlock the full potential that NDC can deliver to all stakeholders, from airlines to travel sellers and all the way to the corporate traveler, thus enabling NDC adoption at scale.” CWT made big strides in expanding its NDC content coverage in 2023. The Finnair implementation is the latest milestone on CWT’s roadmap to provide clients with NDC content, which now includes the Cytric, Concur, Serko, and GetThere OBTs, with content being sourced via Amadeus, Sabre and Travelfusion. It intends to build on that momentum through 2024, with NDC deployments for more airlines and markets in the pipeline.

Bob W expands in the Nordics with two more properties in Finland

Tech-led serviced apartment brand Bob W has announced two more properties in Finland, as it continues to strengthen its foothold in Europe. In addition to Helsinki property Bob W Kaarti that is due to open this summer, new property Bob W Kamppi is also situated in the Finnish capital while Bob W Turku City Centre, is the company’s first property in this historic area of Finland. Combined, these two locations add over a hundred sustainable apartments to the company’s growing portfolio. Known for its distinctive tech, these design led, sustainable apartments benefit from locally inspired interiors and a seamless digital service as Bob W continues to build its reputation for a ‘Best of Both Worlds’ approach to hospitality — the reliability of a hotel and the ‘live like a local’ experience of a home. Bob W Turku City Centre is a purpose-made development in one of Turku’s landmark buildings at Eerikinkatu 12C known as ‘Vanun Talo’ or the Cotton Wool House. The property was named after its longest-standing tenant, a fully female-led textile company ‘Oy Turun Vanu’ occupied it until the 1950s. Recently referred to by locals as ‘Queen of the Marketplace’, Bob W Turku City Centre is situated in the bustling market square next to excellent transport links – a perfect position for exploring the area. Hand picked by Bob W, Turku was chosen for its historical charm, modern vibe and wide selection of vibrant stalls, cafes and restaurants (Turku is known as Finland’s food capital) as well as big name shops, malls and department stores. In the summer, the city of Turku really shines. A walk along the Aura River gives views of traditional medieval buildings such as the Turku Cathedral and Castle, and the river boats turn into cosy pubs anchored alongside outdoor eateries, while regular music festivals, such as the internationally acclaimed Ruis Rock add to the atmosphere. Constructed in the 1920s, this historical jugendstil building showcases unique architectural features including the varying floor levels and the recent restoration of the building’s facade. Inside, local designers and artists have created a warm, authentic atmosphere inspired by the laid-back browns and greens of the Aura River. Muted tones are accented with shades from Turku’s iconic landmarks including the city’s official mascot Posankka (it’s Pigduck!), bringing a splash of pink. Inspiration is drawn from the functionalism of the 1920s and 30s, where comfort takes priority and every corner feels like home. Bob W Kamppi, secured in collaboration with real estate partner Slättö, sits in an area of Helsinki that is known as the heart of the Finnish music scene where more than half of the city’s live music venues are situated. Kamppi is a cultural melting pot of creativity and is home to many museums, record companies and music festival headquarters – the Urho Kekkosen Katu stretch has even been nicknamed ‘Rock and Roll Street’. In keeping with a growing trend in the repurposing of commercial buildings, Bob W Kamppi is a former office block that will be transformed into stylish apartments set around an inner courtyard with a rooftop sauna lounge, in a prime location. Office to hospitality conversions are bringing new life to cities, a movement that Bob W is a true advocate of with projects such as Kamppi and others across Europe. Opening in 2025, Bob W Kamppi’s mixture of studios and one-bedroom units will have an interior concept designed by local design agency KOKO3, uniquely merging the building's 70s raw architecture with modern Finnish design. A colour palette inspired by the local neighbourhood blends with statement design pieces, while locally sourced artworks, a signature of the Bob W brand, capture Kamppi’s essence. Collaborations from renowned contemporary Finnish designers Vaarni & Basta feature in coworking spaces, in the rooftop lounge and in the sauna facilities, showcasing a mix of nostalgia and modernity. As a climate-neutral hospitality provider, Bob W’s extensive renovation of this office building has the environment at its core. In partnership with renowned sustainability experts Avarrus Architects, a firm that was shortlisted for Finland’s highest architectural award, the vision for Bob W Kamppi is to preserve the building’s original 1970’s essence, while significantly elevating its sustainability credentials and functionality. Refurbishment plans include advanced, eco-friendly HVAC systems, energy efficient windows replacements, roof repairs, a renovated parking deck and the integration of solar energy solutions, all aligning to achieve LEED gold certification, the highest sustainability standards in the green building rating system. Every Bob W Turku and Bob W Kamppi apartment is fitted with a kitchen area and extra home comforts, making them a perfect base to work or explore from for longer stays. They also benefit from Bob W’s distinctive tech that provides a fully-digital guest journey including 24/7 customer service, keyless entry and access to Bob W’s local marketplace that connects guests with local partners offering a range of services from breakfast to gym passes. Real estate partner Slättö partnered with Bob W to secure the Bob W Kamppi property, having already acquired Bob W Kaarti in 2023. Erik Möller, Head of Hotels at Slättö in Finland said: "Helsinki city centre is a market we strongly believe in. There is a shortage of high-end modern offerings and Bob W Kamppi will be one of the most central alternatives for both business and leisure. The innovative, digital platform from Bob W allows to focus on both short and long stay, driving high utilisation and efficient operations”. Niko Karstikko, Co-founder and CEO of Bob W, said: “As a Finnish Pan-European hospitality brand, I am thrilled that Bob W is supporting its heritage by opening more world class properties in Finland. The Finnish market is a rapidly evolving travel destination that is not only popular for guests looking for tranquillity and adventure but is a thriving hotspot for the hospitality industry. “The city of Turku is a place close to my heart. Half of my family are from the area and I’m delighted that Bob W is supporting this destination, I believe it is a place everyone should visit. It’s such a vibrant area, bustling with museums, galleries and waterfront restaurants. “I am a massive champion of Helsinki and it’s great that Bob W is expanding its presence in the city. Bob W Turku and Bob W Kamppi are the ideal place for the next generation of travellers and digital nomads to stay, whether it is for a night, weeks or for longer stays.”

Finland Further Tightens Entry Rules for Russian Visitors

eTurboNews: Finland’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement, announcing that the Nordic country will tighten entry rules for visitors from Russian Federation. Starting on July 10, 2023, entry by Russian leisure and business travelers, Russian property owners and Russian students into Finland and transit through Finland to other countries of the Schengen Zone will be restricted. “Finland will continue to impose restrictions on the travel by citizens of the Russian Federation. Non-essential travel by Russian citizens to Finland and through Finland to the rest of the Schengen area will continue to be restricted for the time being. At the same time, restrictions will be tightened for business travelers, property owners and students,” the Foreign Ministry‘s statement read. New restrictions apply to entry with a visa in Finland and transit to Schengen area, where the purpose of the stay is a short tourist journey. The statement specifies that “business travelers will only be allowed to travel to Finland, i.e. transit to other countries will be prohibited.” Citizens of Russian Federation, who own any property in Finland “will also be required to provide grounds for their personal presence.” Russian students “will only be allowed to participate in programs leading to a degree or studies completed as part of a degree.” “This will exclude participation in courses,” the ministry added. “The new restrictions will enter into force on July 10, 2023, at 00:00 and will remain in effect until further notice,” the statement said. If the Finnish Border Guard assess the decision on refusal of entry and the Schengen visa was issued by Finland, the visa will usually be revoked. If the visa was issued by another EU or Schengen state, the Finnish Border Guard contacts the competent authorities of the issuing Member State when considering the revocation of a visa. Russian citizens who have a residence permit in Finland, in an EU member state, in an European Economic Area member state or in Switzerland, or have a long-stay visa to a Schengen country (type D visa), can still arrive in Finland.
