Inaugural Flight and Schedule The inaugural flight departed Brisbane on Monday evening and will operate four times per week using the airline’s Airbus A330 aircraft. This new service adds more than 100,000 seats annually between Australia and the Philippines, complementing Qantas’ existing daily flights from Sydney to Manila and strengthening its presence in this key market. Enhanced Connectivity The new Brisbane-Manila route also improves connectivity for passengers travelling from New Zealand. With easy connections in both directions from Auckland and Christchurch via Brisbane, it is more convenient for travellers from New Zealand to reach the Philippines. A Rich History of Service Qantas has a long and storied history of operations in the Philippines, dating back to 1947 when it first touched down with Lancastrian aircraft supporting Australian Government military operations. The airline introduced Super Constellation passenger services in 1950 and commenced the first jet flights between Australia and Manila in 1961 with Boeing 707 services, eliminating the need for a stopover. Today, Qantas operates over 300,000 seats annually between Australia and the Philippines and will celebrate 75 years of passenger services between the two countries in 2025. Comments from Qantas and Brisbane Airport Executives Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace highlighted the significance of the new route, stating, “The Philippines is a very strong market for Qantas, and we are pleased to be responding to demand for our services with new flights from Brisbane. This new direct flight will make it easier and faster for Queenslanders to get to the Philippines in a single hop.” Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff added, “The addition of this Qantas service further strengthens Brisbane Airport’s connections into Southeast Asia. The Philippines is one of the world’s fastest-growing economies and a key trading partner for Queensland. With our state home to a vibrant Filipino community, the business and tourism opportunities generated by this expanded connectivity will no doubt be a success.” Expanding International Network The launch of the Brisbane-Manila route follows Qantas’ recent expansion of its international network from Brisbane, including new flights to Palau and upgrades to some Auckland and Los Angeles services with the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Amadeus boosts the in-facility experience at Brisbane Airport

Brisbane Airport selected Amadeus technology to deliver an exceptional passenger experience at both its domestic and international terminals. This move is part of the airport’s ongoing AUD5 billion Future BNE transformation programme and aims to make checking in and dropping off luggage easier and more convenient for passengers. Brisbane Airport’s passenger processing technology moves to the cloud thanks to the introduction of Amadeus’ Airport Cloud Use Service. The service powers 300 agent-assisted check-in desks across both terminals, facilitating easier connection and common use capabilities for its airline partners.  At the same time, the airport will also move away from legacy technology to embrace around 100 new self-service bag drop units, as well as over 260 self-service check-in kiosks from Amadeus. The new technology enables Brisbane Airport to reduce queues, and passengers to choose between a smooth self-service or agent-led experience, powered by reliable technology that removes friction at check-in and bag drop. An excellent example of progress Brisbane Airport chief executive Gert-Jan de Graaf said of this latest development: “The first new-generation check-in row is already up and running, and the feedback from travellers and airline staff has been fantastic. It’s a giant leap from the 1990s to now.” Amadeus’ senior vice-president for APAC airport and airline operations Sarah Samuel added: “Brisbane is a great example of an airport with a long-term transformation strategy that places the traveller at the heart of the experience. With flexible cloud infrastructure and advanced self-service options the technology foundations are being laid so Brisbane can offer passengers an outstanding experience for years to come.”

Jetstar Soars to Second Place as Brisbane Airport Hits Pre-COVID Passenger Numbers

Jetstar has ascended to become the second largest international carrier at Brisbane Airport, which has now reached 95% of its total pre-COVID passenger numbers. The low-cost airline now trails only Qantas, having grown by a staggering 149% internationally in Brisbane over the past year. This growth is largely attributed to a significant increase in flights to Asia and enhanced services to Auckland. “Queenslanders have embraced Jetstar’s low fares, with all of the new route launches from Brisbane Airport receiving strong support. This has propelled the airline from being Brisbane’s seventh biggest international carrier to number two,” said Ryan Both, Executive General Manager of Aviation at Brisbane Airport. In the 2024 financial year, Brisbane saw a total of 22.6 million passengers, including 5.6 million international and 17 million domestic passengers. This represents a recovery of 89% and 97% on FY19 levels respectively. “We know more Queenslanders have been ticking off their bucket lists, but importantly we’re also seeing more international tourists visiting the state. That’s good news for the state’s tourism regions from the Gold Coast to Tropical North Queensland and the Outback,” Both added. Brisbane now offers flights to 32 international destinations, just one shy of its pre-COVID high of 33. Major US carriers American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are planning direct flights to Brisbane this year, joining United, Air Canada, and Qantas in trans-Pacific services. “We are eagerly looking forward to the launch of American Airlines direct from Dallas and Delta from Los Angeles,” said Both. “By the end of the year there will be five major carriers serving the North American market, providing a historic level of options and competition across the Pacific.” Last June, Jetstar announced a major increase in its international services out of Brisbane, including shifting its Tokyo (Narita) service from the Gold Coast, commencing new direct flights from Brisbane to Osaka and Seoul (Incheon), and increasing the frequency of its existing flights to Bali and Auckland. Steph Tully, CEO of Jetstar, thanked the Queensland government and Brisbane Airport for their support via the state’s Attracting Aviation Investment Fund (AAIF). “The new partnership with Brisbane Airport has unlocked about half a million new seats between Brisbane and some of the most popular international destinations on our network,” Tully said. Jetstar also recently announced plans to launch Brisbane-Bangkok flights by the end of the year, further expanding its international footprint and bringing even more tourists to the sunshine state from Japan, South Korea, and across the Tasman.

From 28 October 2024, the oneworld carrier will increase its Hong Kong-Perth services from six to eleven flights a week and Hong Kong-Brisbane services from six to ten weekly. Maintaining Services in Sydney and Melbourne While these changes are taking place, both Sydney and Melbourne will continue to retain their current schedules of four and three flights a day, respectively. A Boost for Local Tourism Local authorities have welcomed the increase in services. “Securing additional non-stop aviation services is absolutely vital to driving more travellers to our state, injecting visitor spend into our economy, and creating jobs in the tourism and hospitality industries,” said Western Australia Acting Tourism Minister John Carey. “We’re really excited to see an uplift in Cathay Pacific’s weekly offerings, with the airline now operating more services to Perth than they did pre-pandemic.” Cathay Pacific and HK Express: A Strong Recovery According to Lavinia Lau, chief customer and commercial officer of Cathay Pacific and low-cost carrier HK Express, they currently operate at just over 80 percent of their pre-COVID capacity. However, the recovery is well underway. Thus far in 2024, Cathay Pacific has already added Chennai, Colombo, and Barcelona back to its network. Meanwhile, HK Express has added Beijing (Daxing), Bangkok (Don Mueang), Sanya, and Clark. Looking Ahead: More Destinations on the Horizon Cathay and HK Express currently fly to more than 80 destinations, which is expected to grow to more than 90 by next year. This marks a significant milestone in the aviation industry’s recovery as airlines like Cathay Pacific continue to expand their networks and restore their services to pre-pandemic levels. The return to full capacity in Perth and Brisbane, the winter return to Cairns, and the addition of new destinations all signal a strong recovery and a bright future for Cathay Pacific. As the world opens up again, Cathay Pacific is ready to welcome passengers back on board and connect them to the destinations they love.

Qantas Adjusts Asia Network: Suspends Sydney-Shanghai Flights Adds Brisbane-Manila

In a significant reshuffle of its Asia network, Qantas has announced a series of updates, including suspending its Sydney-Shanghai flights and launching a new route from Brisbane to Manila. Sydney-Shanghai Service Suspended Amid Low Demand Starting 28 July 2024, Qantas will suspend flights to Shanghai due to low demand. The airline resumed the Sydney-Shanghai service in October last year following a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the anticipated recovery in demand has not materialized. Qantas has committed to closely monitoring the market and plans to resume the service once demand rebounds. For customers affected by the suspension, Qantas offers a full refund or rebooking options on alternative flights. The airline assures continued connectivity to Shanghai and other Chinese destinations via its Hong Kong flights, with connections on partner airlines. Redirecting Resources to Meet Rising Demand in Asia The aircraft previously servicing the Shanghai route will now be deployed to enhance Qantas’ presence in other Asian destinations experiencing increased demand or presenting new tourism opportunities. New Direct Flights from Brisbane to Manila From 28 October 2024, Qantas will operate a new international route from Brisbane to Manila four times a week using Airbus A330 aircraft. This marks the airline’s return to the route after more than a decade, adding over 100,000 seats annually between Australia and the Philippines. Increased Flights to Singapore and India Qantas is set to boost its services to Singapore by approximately 10%, adding over 2,500 seats weekly. The Sydney-Singapore flights will increase from 14 to 17 return trips per week starting 11 December 2024, while the Brisbane-Singapore service will increase from seven to nine return flights per week from 27 October 2024. These changes aim to improve connectivity with Qantas’ daily Singapore-London service and reduce travel time to Heathrow. Additionally, the Sydney-Bengaluru route will expand from five weekly flights to daily during the peak holiday season from mid-December 2024 to late March 2025, providing over 12,000 additional seats over four months. Qantas International CEO Comments Cam Wallace, CEO of Qantas International, emphasized the airline’s commitment to aligning its services with customer needs. “Post-COVID, the travel landscape has shifted, and we are adapting our network accordingly,” said Wallace. “While we scale back on routes with lower demand, such as Shanghai, we’re excited to offer new options like the Brisbane-Manila route and increased flights to Singapore and Bengaluru, enhancing our customers’ travel choices and convenience.” Tickets for the new and additional flights are available on the Qantas website and through travel agents. Bookings for the Brisbane-Manila flights are expected to open soon. *All new services and increases are subject to government and regulatory approval. This media story has been crafted to provide a comprehensive overview of Qantas’ network updates and the strategic decisions behind them.
