Indonesian tourism ministry and Balinese government to build up high-quality tourism
The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism is teaming up with the provincial government of Bali for the further development of sustainable and high-quality tourism initiatives on the island. This cooperative effort is seen as a response to ongoing issues affecting the island destination, particularly the adverse impact of overtourism. In a statement released on Sunday, 20th July, tourism minister Widyanti Putri Wardhana pointed out that, as one of the country’s foremost destinations, Bali continues to be a focal point of the Indonesian tourism sector as seen in the growing number of both local and foreign tourists making their way there. A need to address pressing issues However, the minister pointed out that several issues need to be addressed immediately, and this will entail active cooperation between the central and local governments. Unlicensed accommodation providers are among those issues, but spatial planning and overall tourism development rank highly over other critical points. The ministry also sees an urgent need to properly deal with traffic congestion, waste management, and the need to promote less popular locations in Bali. Wardhana said: "We also acknowledge the challenges related to the behavior of certain tourists in Bali. We will continue working to educate visitors through cooperation with Indonesian embassies and other partners."
