Qatar Airways Expands Fleet with More Boeing 777-9 Aircraft

Qatar Airways recently ordered 20 more Boeing 777-9 aircraft, expanding its 777X order book to nearly 100 airplanes. This announcement was made on the second day of the Farnborough International Airshow 2024. The Boeing 777-9 is set to be the largest and most fuel-efficient twin-engine jet in the world. Qatar Airways has successfully launched the 777X program and now has 60 777-9 passenger airplanes on order. The airline is also the inaugural launch customer for the 777-8 Freighter and has 34 of these next-generation cargo jets on order. Setting New Standards The 777X program, based on the popular Boeing 777 family and incorporating advanced technologies from the 787 Dreamliner, is designed to set new efficiency standards, environmental performance, and passenger experience standards. The 777-9, the largest in the family, will help operators open new growth opportunities. It can carry 426 passengers in a typical two-class configuration and has a range of 7,295 nautical miles (13,510 km). In July 2024, Boeing began certification flight testing for the 777-9. Qatar Airways has 12 787 Dreamliner and 25 737 MAX aircraft on order, in addition to the 777X family. A Commitment to Quality and Innovation Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer Engineer Badr Mohammed Al-Meer expressed pride in expanding the existing Boeing 777X aircraft order by 20, bringing the total to 94. “As the World’s Best Airline, we are an industry leader and operate one of the youngest fleets, offering unparalleled innovation and quality. Keeping an eye on the future, we ensure that all Qatar Airways passengers are only met with the best products and services available in the industry,” Al-Meer said. Confidence in Boeing Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, expressed gratitude for Qatar Airways’ confidence in Boeing. “We appreciate their confidence that Boeing’s market-leading widebody family will provide outstanding fuel efficiency and a superior passenger experience for its global operations,” Pope said. Boeing’s 2024 Commercial Market Outlook forecasts that twin-aisle jets such as its 777X and 787 Dreamliner will make up 44% of the region’s fleet across Middle Eastern operators over the next 20 years. This indicates a promising future for Boeing and Qatar Airways as they continue leading the way in aviation innovation.

Air Canada announces prepayment of EDC financed loans used to acquire 19 Airbus A220-300 Aircraft

An Air Canada Airbus A220-300. (CNW Group/Air Canada) Air Canada announced it has prepaid loans of approximately $650 million from Export Development Corporation (EDC) used by the company to help fund its acquisition of 19 Airbus A220-300 aircraft. The prepayment, which is also subject to accrued interest, was made on June 21, 2023. "One of Air Canada's major financial objectives is to deleverage its balance sheet following the COVID-19 pandemic and prepaying these loans we received for our A220 aircraft is a significant step toward this goal. We appreciate EDC's assistance in purchasing these Canadian-built aircraft, which not only advanced our fleet modernization program to improve our fuel efficiency and competitiveness, but also helped to ensure that the investments Air Canada is making directly support jobs in Canada's aerospace industry and contribute to the country's economy," said Amos Kazzaz, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Air Canada. The prepayment of the loans for 19 Airbus A220-300 aircraft financed through EDC was achieved via: a full prepayment of Air Canada's 2021 credit facility with EDC for the acquisition of 15 Airbus A220-300 aircraft, and a partial prepayment of Air Canada's 2020 credit facility with EDC for the acquisition of 18 Airbus A220-300 aircraft. As a result of the prepayment, these aircraft will be added to Air Canada's unencumbered asset pool, bringing the total to approximately $5.4 billion, excluding Aeroplan. The amount of debt prepayments now totals approximately $1.28 billion since and including the repurchase of some of Air Canada's outstanding 4.000% convertible senior notes due 2025 completed last year, leading to a reduction in interest expense of approximately $115 million (approximately $72 million in cash) on an annualized basis. Qatar Airways welcomes new-gen first Boeing 777-9 aircraft to Doha

Qatar Airways showcased its role as a global launch customer for the latest generation Boeing 777-9 aircraft after welcoming the ultra-modern, fuel efficient jet to Doha International Airport (DIA). A host of VIP guests joined Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, Akbar Al Baker, to share in the arrival of the aircraft, which will remain in Qatar before returning to Seattle’s Boeing Field to continue its rigorous test program. The aircraft, which is anticipated to join the award-winning airline’s fleet in the near future, will be the world’s largest and most efficient twin-engine jet, delivering 20 percent lower fuel consumption and emissions than previous generation aircraft. Key technologies enabling this efficiency are its new carbon-fibre composite wing, new engines and natural laminar flow nacelles. The 777-9 builds on the passenger-preferred and market-leading 777 and 787 Dreamliner families to deliver the flight experience of the future. Passengers and crew alike will enjoy a more comfortable cabin altitude, better humidity, a smoother ride, a wider cabin, larger windows and a spacious architecture. Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, Akbar Al Baker, said: “It was back in 2013 that Qatar Airways Group initially announced its planned investment in the Boeing’s latest generation aircraft. After visiting the Boeing factory in Everett, Washington in September 2018, we had the opportunity to view the 777-9 up close in person, but today marks the first chance for the airline and our esteemed VIP guests to witness our significant commitment to this incredible aircraft here in Qatar as it arrives for the first time.” Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO, Stan Deal, said:  “We are honored by Qatar Airways’ enduring commitment to the 777-9 and to the partnership and innovation it represents. With its unprecedented improvement in fuel efficiency and emissions and new levels of comfort, we look forward to seeing the 777-9 delight Qatar Airway’s passengers for many years to come.”

SIA and Scoot receive highest rating for COVID-19 airline safety

Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Scoot, the two passenger airlines within the SIA Group, have been awarded the highest 5-Star rating in the Skytrax COVID-19 airline safety audit, the carriers announced in a joint media release on Tuesday (10 Aug). Scoot is the first low-cost carrier in the world to get this 5-Star rating from Skytrax. This follows a comprehensive assessment of the airlines’ health and safety measures for customers and staff members across the entire travel journey. Skytrax evaluated more than 190 safety and hygiene protocols at SIA and Scoot during the audit. This included cleanliness at the airport and onboard flights, social distancing measures, use of face masks and sanitisers, and other hygiene improvement systems. These were then certified based on professional and scientific investigations of the airlines’ standards. Mr Lee Lik Hsin, executive vice president commercial, SIA, said: “Since the onset of the pandemic, we have reviewed and reinforced health and safety measures in more than 100 touchpoints along the travel journey. This will be an ongoing process, as our priority is to do everything possible to keep our customers and staff safe at all times." He added that the 5-Star rating from Skytrax is a “welcome recognition” of the airline’s commitment to this goal. “SIA has long been recognised for our industry-leading products and award-winning customer service. Today, world-class health and safety standards are also an integral part of our brand promise as we gradually rebuild our network and welcome customers back onboard our flights.” Mr Campbell Wilson, CEO of Scoot, said: “In addition to value, comfort, convenience, and safety, travellers increasingly seek assurance on airlines’ hygiene measures. Since the earliest days of the pandemic, Scoot has made health and safety a priority, strengthening our cleaning and other procedures, and introducing new low- or no-touch self-service options across our touchpoints." Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted added that being able to provide such a high-level assurance to customers of a safe travel experience is the "most important factor" in restoring confidence in air travel.

10 ways to prevent COVID-19 airborne transmission

The World Health Organization (WHO) made a shocking announcement on the possibility of COVID-19 airborne transmission. According to some scientists, the new strain of coronavirus may be airborne. Airborne transmission is defined as the spread of an infectious agent caused by the dissemination of droplet nuclei (aerosols) that remain infectious when suspended in air over long distances and time. Airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 can occur during medical procedures that generate aerosols (“aerosol-generating procedures”). WHO, together with the scientific community, has been actively discussing and evaluating whether SARS-CoV-2 may also spread through aerosols in the absence of aerosol-generating procedures, particularly in indoor settings with poor ventilation. Some of the examples of airborne diseases are: Common cold Influenza Measles Chickenpox Mumps Tuberculosis Whooping cough (pertussis) While it’s not possible to completely avoid airborne pathogens, below are some of the ways one can do to prevent COVID-19 airborne transmission: Avoid large gatherings of people as airborne diseases can spread easily. Wear a face mask or some kind of barrier in front of the face, which decreases the risk of coming into contact with an airborne microbe and stops microbes present inside the body from diffusing rapidly into the atmosphere. Practice social distancing. Make sure rooms are well-ventilated to help clear the air quickly. Cough/sneeze into a handkerchief or into the elbow to reduce airborne transmission. Avoid touching the face, nose and eyes. Regularly wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds or disinfect with alcohol or hand sanitiser when access to soap and water is not available. Avoid close contact with those who are sick or have active symptoms of the disease Clean. Germs and viruses love to lurk on items you touch every day. Practice healthy habits such as: Get plenty of sleep. Eat a well-balanced diet. Drink lots of fluids. Manage your stress. Exercise regularly.

Asia-Pacific airlines saw 9.6% YOY demand growth for air cargo in March: IATA

Representative Image The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released data for March 2025 global air cargo markets showing that the total demand, measured in cargo tonne-kilometers (CTK), increased by 4.4% compared to March 2024 levels (+5.5% for international operations), a historic peak for March. Capacity, measured in available cargo tonne-kilometers (ACTK), expanded by 4.3% compared to March 2024 (+6.1% for international operations). “March cargo volumes were strong. It is possible that this is partly a front-loading of demand as some businesses tried to beat the well-telegraphed 2 April tariff announcement by the Trump Administration. The uncertainty over how much of the 2 April proposals will be implemented may eventually weigh on trade. In the meantime, the lower fuel costs—which are also a result of the same uncertainty—are a short-term positive factor for air cargo. And, within the temporary pause on implementation we hope that political leaders will be able to shift trade tensions to reliable agreements that can restore confidence in global supply chains,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General. Several factors in the operating environment should be noted: March volumes typically rise after a lull in February, and this single-digit increase is in line with pre-COVID growth trends. Jet fuel prices dropped 17.3% year-on-year, marking nine straight months of year-on-year declines. The sharp rise in US tariffs and new trade rules, especially the 2 May ban on duty-free imports from China and Hong Kong, may have prompted companies and buyers to make purchases in advance to avoid significant import fees. World industrial output grew 3.2% year-on-year, and trade volumes expanded 2.9%. Many key Consumer Price Inflation (CPI) indices fell: US inflation was 2.4%, down 0.4 points from February, EU CPI was 2.5% and Japan’s rate fell 0.1% to 3.6%. China remains in deflation but this eased to -0.1%. Middle Eastern carriers saw a -3.2% year-on-year decrease in demand growth for air cargo in March. Capacity increased by 0.8% year-on-year. Capacity increased by 10.5% year-on-year.   Trade Lane Growth: The Europe-North America route was the busiest trade lane in March. Hunnu Air receives Mongolia’s first-ever Embraer E195-E2

Aviation lessor Azorra recently delivered the first of two new Embraer E195-E2 aircraft to Hunnu Air, marking a new partnership for the firm, as well as bringing in the first E2 to operate in Mongolia. The E195-E2 delivered from Azorra’s firm order-book with Embraer will support Hunnu Air as it grows its fleet and expands its route network to key destinations across Asia-Pacific, offering greater capacity and longer-range capability. This specific aircraft model is a modern, fuel-efficient aircraft that is optimally designed to reduce operating costs and improve efficiencies in existing markets, while facilitating the exploration and development of new markets.  Meanwhile, Azorra continues to work with Embraer to strengthen the E2’s presence in Asia, having previously delivered the region’s first E2 aircraft to Scoot in April 2024.  The addition of Hunnu Air to Azorra’s expanding network of airline customers highlights the increasing demand for fuel-efficient, comfortable, new generation aircraft in the region.  A milestone in Mongolian aviation Azorra founder and chief executive John Evans said: "We are thrilled to deliver Mongolia's first new Embraer E195-E2 aircraft to our valued partners at Hunnu Air. This is a significant step in the growth of Hunnu Air and a major milestone for the future of aviation in Mongolia.” Evans pointed out that the delivery also reinforces his company’s strong partnership with Embraer.  He added: “As demand for these jets surges across the Asia-Pacific region, we are excited to continue providing our airline partners with innovative fleet solutions.” Hunnu Air CEO Munkhjargal Purevjal likewise said: “We’ve been an E190 operator since 2019 and the E195-E2 is the perfect extension as we meet growing demand for air travel across Mongolia and beyond. These new generation aircraft will allow us to increase capacity to Haikou, Sanya, and Phu Quoc, expand services to Japan, China, Vietnam, India and South Korea, and introduce scheduled flights to Tashkent. We’re thankful for the support of Azorra and Embraer as the E2 will be integral to our long-term growth.” Embraer Commercial Aviation’s chief commercial officer Martyn Holmes pointed out that the entry of the E195-E2 into Mongolia is a key development for the region’s aviation landscape.  As he puts it: “The aircraft’s advanced technology, low noise levels, unbeatable efficiency, and unparalleled passenger comfort make it the ideal choice for airlines looking to grow strategically while optimizing operational costs. We look forward to supporting Hunnu Air’s strategic growth and thank Hunnu Air for their continued partnership and our leasing partner Azorra for their continued collaboration, combining again with Embraer.”
