Royal Caribbean Group sponsors first Yatsushiro Cruise Festival
The event celebrates the rich heritage of the port city of Kumamoto
Royal Caribbean Group sponsors the upcoming Yatsushiro Cruise Festival, set to take place on Saturday, 5th October, at the vibrant Kumamon Port Yatsushiro.
The festival will welcome guests, including those from Royal Caribbean’s Spectrum of the Seas, as well as locals to celebrate and experience the incredible talents and products of the region.
Wendy Yamazaki, Royal Caribbean Group’s regional vice-president for government relations in Asia said: “We believe in celebrating the uniqueness of every destination we visit, and by spotlighting local cultures, we build bridges of understanding and pride within communities. This ‘shop local’ initiative is a wonderful opportunity to bring together locals and guests, reinforcing the importance of supporting local economies and preserving cultural heritage.”
The festival reflects Royal Caribbean Group’s commitment to energising communities, celebrating local cultural heritage, and promoting economic vibrancy through sustainable tourism. By engaging with local communities, the cruise line aims to contribute to the long-term economic vitality of regions like Yatsushiro, creating opportunities for growth and connection.
Exploring the richness of local culture
Set against the picturesque backdrop of the world’s longest tatami mat installation at Kumamon Port Yatsushiro, the festival will feature a variety of traditional cultural exhibitions and experiences.
These include an opportunity to discover the rich heritage of Kumamoto’s famed craftsmanship, including tatami and bamboo products, supporting local artisans; food and beverage sampling featuring Yatsushiro’s renowned craft gin, made from locally grown citrus fruits, as well as the opportunity to purchase and taste fresh regional produce, celebrating the area’s agricultural richness; immersive cultural experiences like wearing samurai helmets, practising origami with local students, partaking in a traditional tea ceremony, whilst enjoying traditional performances.
The event will also feature a special appearance by Kumamon, Kumamoto’s beloved bear mascot, on top of a traditional Japanese lion dance and a taiko drum performance.
The Yatsushiro Cruise Festival is proudly supported by the Yatsushiro Inbound Tourism Promotion Strategy Executive Committee, which brings together local organisations and government bodies to showcase the spirit and talent of Kumamoto.
