Tianguis Turistico, Mexico´s largest trade event, is the number one platform for promoting the country´s diverse tourism offerings. The four day event began with a large opening ceremony in Expo Mundo Imperial, Acapulco. The ceremony was attended by many government officials, including the Mexican President, Enrique Peña Nieto.
In his speech the President was keen to remind attendees that he had fulfilled his promise to return Tianguis Turistico to Acapulco, where it began in the 1970s. He went on to say that with the return of Tianguis Turistico to Acapulco, the government hopes to ‘re-launch the pearl of the Pacific.’ Nieto also acknowledged that it was Acapulco that projected Mexico onto the World stage and so now, with the government’s efforts to raise Acapulco’s international profile, they want ‘Mexico to give back to Acapulco, what Acapulco gave to Mexico.’
Nieto went on to say that across the last four years of his administration Mexico has ‘seen growing tourism figures’. There has been a 50% growth in inbound tourism since 2012 and the number of international tourists in 2016 reached 35 million. The President noted that these impressive figures have brought greatly enriched the country with the income it provides the tourism supply chain of what is now a $MXN 50 billion industry.
